Some characteristics of the insulin augmentation phenomenon
A serum protein fraction possessing the capacity to augment insulin action on adipose tissue in vitro has been isolated and studied. Factors responsible for augmentation have been found to be nondialyzable and susceptible to destruction by ethanol, alkali and heat. The augmentation phenomenon is probably dependent upon the presence of a protein moiety.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/31985/1/0000027.pd
Further studies on insulin augmentation capacities of various serum proteins
The ability of human serum protein to augment the action of crystalline insulin on the epididymal fat pad has been further evaluated. Serum proteins were fractionated by elution from DEAE cellulose and the capacity of individual fractions to augment insulin action determined. The property was found to be present in all fractions, but concentrated to a slightly greater extent in the fastermoving gamma globulins and beta globulins. The augmentation effect has again been found to be deficient in diabetes mellitus.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/32000/1/0000042.pd
Field effect enhancement in buffered quantum nanowire networks
III-V semiconductor nanowires have shown great potential in various quantum
transport experiments. However, realizing a scalable high-quality
nanowire-based platform that could lead to quantum information applications has
been challenging. Here, we study the potential of selective area growth by
molecular beam epitaxy of InAs nanowire networks grown on GaAs-based buffer
layers. The buffered geometry allows for substantial elastic strain relaxation
and a strong enhancement of field effect mobility. We show that the networks
possess strong spin-orbit interaction and long phase coherence lengths with a
temperature dependence indicating ballistic transport. With these findings, and
the compatibility of the growth method with hybrid epitaxy, we conclude that
the material platform fulfills the requirements for a wide range of quantum
experiments and applications
The HST Key Project on the Extragalactic Distance Scale. XXII. The Discovery of Cepheids in NGC 1326-A
We report on the detection of Cepheids and the first distance measurement to
the spiral galaxy NGC 1326-A, a member of the Fornax cluster of galaxies. We
have employed data obtained with the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 on board
the Hubble Space Telescope. Over a 49 day interval, a total of twelve V-band
(F555W) and eight I-band (F814W) epochs of observation were obtained. Two
photometric reduction packages, ALLFRAME and DoPHOT, have been employed to
obtain photometry measures from the three Wide Field CCDs. Variability analysis
yields a total of 17 Cepheids in common with both photometry datasets, with
periods ranging between 10 and 50 days. Of these 14 Cepheids with high-quality
lightcurves are used to fit the V and I period-luminosity relations and derive
apparent distance moduli, assuming a Large Magellanic Cloud distance modulus
(m-M) (LMC) = 18.50 +- 0.10 mag and color excess E(B-V) = 0.10 mag. Assuming
A(V)/E(V-I) = 2.45, the DoPHOT data yield a true distance modulus to NGC 1326-A
of (m-M)_0 = 31.36 +- 0.17 (random) +- 0.13 (systematic) mag, corresponding to
a distance of 18.7 \pm 1.5 (random) \pm 1.2 (systematic) Mpc. The derived
distance to NGC 1326-A is in good agreement with the distance derived
previously to NGC 1365, another spiral galaxy member of the Fornax cluster.
However the distances to both galaxies are significantly lower than to NGC
1425, a third Cepheid calibrator in the outer parts of the cluster.Comment: 33 pages A gzipped tar file containing 12 figures can be obtained

Modulation of Liver Inflammation and Fibrosis by Interleukin-37
Background and Aims: Chronic inflammation induces liver fibrosis, cirrhosis and potentially liver cancer. Kupffer cells modulate hepatic stellate cells by secreting immunologically active proteins as TGF-beta. TGF-beta promotes liver fibrosis via the activation of Sma- and Mad-related protein 3. IL-37 broadly suppresses innate and adaptive immune responses. Intracellular IL-37 interacts with Smad3. We hypothesize that IL-37 downregulates the activation of hepatic Kupffer and stellate cells and interferes with the TGF-beta signaling cascade to modulate liver fibrogenesis.
Methods: The role of IL-37 on liver inflammation and fibrogenesis was assessed in three mouse models as well as isolated Kupffer- and stellate cells. Serum IL-37 was tested by ELISA in a clinical cohort and correlated with liver disease severity.
Results: Transgene expression of IL-37 in mice extends survival, reduces hepatic damage, expression of early markers of fibrosis and histologically assessed liver fibrosis after bile duct ligation. IL-37tg mice were protected against CCl4-induced liver inflammation. Colitis-associated liver inflammation and fibrosis was less severe in IL-10 knockout IL-37tg mice. Spontaneous and LPS/TGF-beta-induced cytokine release and profibrogenic gene expression was lower in HSC and KC isolated from IL-37tg mice and IL-37 overexpressing, IL-1 beta stimulated human LX-2 stellate cells. However, administration of recombinant human IL-37 did not modulate fibrosis pathways after BDL in mice, LX2 cells or murine HSCs. In a large clinical cohort, we observed a positive correlation of serum IL-37 levels with disease severity in liver cirrhosis.
Conclusions: Predominantly intracellular IL-37 downregulates liver inflammation and fibrosis. The correlation of serum IL-37 with disease severity in cirrhosis suggests its potential as a novel target modulating the course of liver fibrosis
The HST Key Project on the Extragalactic Distance Scale XVII. The Cepheid Distance to NGC 4725
The distance to NGC 4725 has been derived from Cepheid variables, as part of
the Hubble Space Telescope Key Project on the Extragalactic Distance Scale.
Thirteen F555W (V) and four F814W (I) epochs of cosmic-ray-split Wide Field and
Planetary Camera 2 observations were obtained. Twenty Cepheids were discovered,
with periods ranging from 12 to 49 days. Adopting a Large Magellanic Cloud
distance modulus and extinction of 18.50+/-0.10 mag and E(V-I)=0.13 mag,
respectively, a true reddening-corrected distance modulus (based on an analysis
employing the ALLFRAME software package) of 30.50 +/- 0.16 (random) +/- 0.17
(systematic) mag was determined for NGC 4725. The corresponding of distance of
12.6 +/- 1.0 (random) +/- 1.0 (systematic) Mpc is in excellent agreement with
that found with an independent analysis based upon the DoPHOT photometry
package. With a foreground reddening of only E(V-I)=0.02, the inferred
intrinsic reddening of this field in NGC 4725, E(V-I)=0.19, makes it one of the
most highly-reddened, encountered by the HST Key Project, to date.Comment: To be published in The Astrophysical Journal, Vol. 512 (1999). 34

Incident Gallstones During Somatostatin Analog Treatment are Associated with Acute Biliary Complications Especially After Discontinuation
INTRODUCTION: Gallstones are a known adverse effect of somatostatin analogs, but the exact incidence and clinical implications are unknown. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence of gallstones on imaging and related complications in unbiased trial data. METHODS: Data from the DIPAK 1 trial, in which 305 polycystic kidney disease patients were randomized to standard of care (SoC) or lanreotide for 120 weeks, were used. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed at baseline and end of treatment and was assessed for the presence, number, and size of gallstones. For all patients who had gallstones at the end of the trial, we obtained follow-up after the trial. RESULTS: Of 249 patients with data available, 11 patients randomized to lanreotide and four randomized to SoC had gallstones at baseline. During the study, new gallstones were formed in 19/124 patients using lanreotide (15%) and 1/125 patients receiving SoC (1%). The odds ratio for gallstone formation with lanreotide use was 25.9 (95% confidence interval 3.37â198.8; p  20 stones in 69% of patients) and small (â€Â 3 mm in 63% of patients). Of the 19 patients with incident gallstones during lanreotide treatment, 9 experienced gallstone-associated complications, 8 of whom experienced gallstone-associated complications after discontinuation of treatment (median time after discontinuation 2.5 years). In patients with gallstones at baseline and in patients receiving SoC, no complications occurred. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with a somatostatin analog leads to the formation of multiple, small gallstones that are associated with severe complications, especially after discontinuation of therapy. The Spitzer c2d Survey of Weak-line T Tauri Stars II: New Constraints on the Timescale for Planet Building
One of the central goals of the Spitzer Legacy Project ``From Molecular Cores
to Planet-forming Disks'' (c2d) is to determine the frequency of remnant
circumstellar disks around weak-line T Tauri stars (wTTs) and to study the
properties and evolutionary status of these disks. Here we present a census of
disks for a sample of over 230 spectroscopically identified wTTs located in the
c2d IRAC (3.6, 4.5, 4.8, and 8.0 um) and MIPS (24 um) maps of the Ophiuchus,
Lupus, and Perseus Molecular Clouds. We find that ~20% of the wTTs in a
magnitude limited subsample have noticeable IR-excesses at IRAC wavelengths
indicating the presence of a circumstellar disk. The disk frequencies we find
in these 3 regions are ~3-6 times larger than that recently found for a sample
of 83 relatively isolated wTTs located, for the most part, outside the highest
extinction regions covered by the c2d IRAC and MIPS maps. The disk fractions we
find are more consistent with those obtained in recent Spitzer studies of wTTs
in young clusters such as IC 348 and Tr 37. From their location in the H-R
diagram, we find that, in our sample, the wTTs with excesses are among the
younger part of the age distribution. Still, up to ~50% of the apparently
youngest stars in the sample show no evidence of IR excess, suggesting that the
circumstellar disks of a sizable fraction of pre-main-sequence stars dissipate
in a timescale of ~1 Myr. We also find that none of the stars in our sample
apparently older than ~10 Myrs have detectable circumstellar disks at
wavelengths < 24 um. Also, we find that the wTTs disks in our sample exhibit a
wide range of properties (SED morphology, inner radius, L_DISK/L*, etc) which
bridge the gaps observed between the cTTs and the debris disk regimes.Comment: 54 pages, 13 figures, Accepted by Ap
