Metabolic Emergencies Related to Diabetes Mellitus: Ketoacidosis and Hyperosmolar State

peer reviewedDiabetic ketoacidosis and hyperglycaemic hyperosmolar state are relatively frequent metabolic emergencies. Such entities complicate type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus, respectively. Diagnosis is ultimately provided by blood and urine analysis. The pathophysiology is mainly based on insulin privation regarding ketoacidosis and resistance to insulin in hyperglycaemic crisis, with an additional deleterious role of counterregulatory hormones. Prognosis of such complications remains generally severe. Management is based on insulin infusion, fluid resuscitation as well as concomitant compensation for electrolytes losses

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has been associated with a drop in diagnoses of several diseases in 2020, including cancers. In this letter addressed to the editor, the Groupement des NĂ©phrologues Francophones de Belgique (GNFB), assessed whether there was a similar effect concerning end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Data of patients with ESRD form 25 of the 26 centers constituting the GNFB register were collected. In conclusion, the year 2020 was marked by an 8% drop in the incidence of overall treatments for ESRD. A particularly marked decline in outpatient dialysis initiation programs (PD and HDD). In addition, the interruption of transplant programs in academic centers as well as the closure of ambulatory patient clinics in a majority of hospitals was associated with a delay in nephrological management.

MARTE: a new OMG profile RFP for the Modeling and Analysis of Real-Time Embedded Systems

    No full text
International audienceA new RFP invitation for an UMLTM profile on Real-Time and Embedded systems modeling and analysis (codename: MARTE) was recently voted at OMG.While of broader scope than strictly SoC design, many objectives of MARTE are highly relevant to the domain (defining time structures, concurrency and communication models, mixing control-flow and dataflow, modeling architectural platforms and adopting Y-chart approaches for allocation of application functions onto architectural resources). We describe the RFP content, stressing its relation to SoC design, as well as others connected activities in the domain, such as SysML, AADL, and UML4SoC
