    Application of geometric hashing techniques to retrieval of high dimensional objects in scientific databases

    An approach to designing very fast algorithms for tackling the problem of approximate object matching in very large databases of high-dimensional objects is proposed. Given are a target object C and a database D containing information about a set of high-dimensional objects each of which is represented as a set of points. Our algorithms have an off-line object preprocessing (shape representation) phase and a recognition phase. The described algorithms determine those objects from D which are the closest to object C, according to delete or insert some points, move and rotation. All of these can be achieved very efficiently with the help of geometric hashing techniques. This scheme has been successfully applied to a real scientific database

    The first soft-shelled turtle from the Jehol Biota of China

    A new turtle from the Early Cretaceous (Aptian) Jiufotang Formation of western Liaoning, China, Perochelys lamadongensis, gen. et sp. nov., represents the first species of soft-shelled turtle from the Jehol Biota. The new taxon is diagnosed by the combination of the following characters: nuchal bone about five times wider than long; preneural absent; reversal of the orientation in the neural series at neural V; neural series fully separates costal series; costal VIIIs reduced; plastral callosities poorly developed and poorly sculpted; postorbital bar narrow, around one-fourth of orbit diameter; jugal contacting squamosal; foramen jugulare posterius separated from fenestra postotica; neural spines weakly developed on anterior cervicals; and phalangeal formula for pes 2-3-3-4-?. High levels of homoplasy make the phylogenetic relationships of the new taxon difficult to assess, and the possibility therefore exists that Perochelys lamadongensis either represents a stem or a crown trionychid. This phylogenetic uncertainty confirms that the skeletal morphology of trionychids has remained virtually unchanged for the last 120 million years

    Characterising pressure and bruising in apple fruit

    A large percentage of apples are wasted each year due to damage such as bruising. The apple journey from orchard to supermarket is very complex and apples are subjected to a variety of static and dynamic loads that could result in this damage occurring. The aim of this work was to use a novel ultrasonic technique to study apple contact areas and stresses under static loading that may occur, for example, in bulk storage bins used during harvesting. These results were used to identify load thresholds above which unacceptable damage occurs. They were also used to validate output from a finite element model, which will ultimately be developed into a packaging design tool to help reduce the likelihood of apple damage occurring

    Video shot boundary detection: seven years of TRECVid activity

    Shot boundary detection (SBD) is the process of automatically detecting the boundaries between shots in video. It is a problem which has attracted much attention since video became available in digital form as it is an essential pre-processing step to almost all video analysis, indexing, summarisation, search, and other content-based operations. Automatic SBD was one of the tracks of activity within the annual TRECVid benchmarking exercise, each year from 2001 to 2007 inclusive. Over those seven years we have seen 57 different research groups from across the world work to determine the best approaches to SBD while using a common dataset and common scoring metrics. In this paper we present an overview of the TRECVid shot boundary detection task, a high-level overview of the most significant of the approaches taken, and a comparison of performances, focussing on one year (2005) as an example

    Brand naming, as part of brand management effort, is one of the most crucial marketing decisions. Young consumers’ brand perception and attitude may be especially influenced by brand names. The purpose of this research is to explore whether fancy brand names have an impact on young consumers’ attitude toward brands and the associated purchase intentions. Experiments were conducted to explore whether fancy names lead to more positive feelings about the products compared with generic names, and if such feelings are associated with purchase intentions. The research results have implications about marketing practice involving young consumers in the case of brand naming

    Clear Cell Cancer of the Uterine Corpus: The Association of Clinicopathologic Parameters and Treatment on Disease Progression

    This paper presents a single-institution experience regarding the clinicopathologic features and treatment strategies used in uterine clear cell cancer (UCC), a rare, aggressive histologic subtype of uterine cancer with poor prognosis and discusses parameters associated with progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). A retrospective chart review was performed on all patients (n = 80) diagnosed with UCC and treated between 1994 and 2009 at a single academic institution. Data on demographics, FIGO stage, treatment regimens, and recurrences were collected. Patients with early-stage UCC had an excellent survival regardless of adjuvant therapy. Advanced-stage patients had a worse survival. Vaginal apex brachytherapy was associated with an increased OS (P = 0.02) but not PFS (P = 0.10). The use of platinum-based chemotherapy in combination with vaginal apex brachytherapy did not significantly improve survival. Innovative therapies still need to be identified for this uncommon uterine cancer

    Transition from electron accumulation to depletion at InGaN surfaces

    The composition dependence of the Fermi-level pinning at the oxidized (0001) surfaces of n-type InxGa1−xN films (0<=x<=1) is investigated using x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The surface Fermi-level position varies from high above the conduction band minimum (CBM) at InN surfaces to significantly below the CBM at GaN surfaces, with the transition from electron accumulation to depletion occurring at approximately x=0.3. The results are consistent with the composition dependence of the band edges with respect to the charge neutrality level

    Exploring the potential climate change impact on urban growth in London by a cellular automata-based Markov chain model

The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record.Urbanization has become a global trend under the combined influence of population growth, socioeconomic development, and globalization. Even though recent urban planning in London has been more deliberate, the relationships between climate change and urban growth in the context of economic geography are still somewhat unclear. This study relies on rainfall prediction with the aid of the Statistical DownScaling Model (SDSM), which provides the statistical foundation for future flooding potential within the urban space of London while considering major socioeconomic policies related to land use management. These SDSM findings, along with current land use policies, were included as other factors or constraints in a cellular automata-based Markov Chain model to simulate and predict land use changes in London for 2030 and 2050. Two scenarios with the inclusion and exclusion of flood impact factor, respectively, were applied to evaluate the impact of climate change on urban growth. Findings indicated: (1) mean monthly projected precipitation derived by SDSM is expected to increase for the year 2030 in London, which will affect the flooding potential and hence the area of open space; (2) urban and open space are expected to increase > 16 and 20km 2 (in percentage of 1.51 and 1.92 compared to 2012) in 2030 and 2050, respectively, while agriculture is expected to decrease significantly due to urbanization and climate change; (3) the inclusion of potential flood impact induced from the future precipitation variability drives the development toward more open space and less urban area.The research is supported by the Global Innovation Initiative (British Council Grant No. Gll206), funded by the British Council and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills

    Simulation Pipeline of Milli-scale Magnetic Robots for Blood Clot Removal

    Milliscale, magnetically-controlled robots can be used for targeted blood clot removal. This method may provide a more precise, less dangerous, and less invasive removal process than the current methods which utilize blood thinning medication and catheters. These robots have helical threads so that magnetically induced rotation will produce a propulsive force that is controlled by an external magnetic system. The speed at which the robots need to rotate in order to hover in place in human blood is called the hovering frequency, and was used as a measure of the efficiency of the robot designs. We developed a pipeline for simulated testing of the robots using Finite Element Methods and post-processing. The flow of blood around the robots when rotating at various frequencies was modeled with the Navier-Stokes equations and approximated using the penalty method. In post-processing, the simulations were evaluated by visualizing the interaction of flow lines with the design geometries, confirming that the divergence is approximately zero along the geometry's surface, and calculating the generated propulsive forces. Various physical design parameters including thread depth, air pocket size, tip shape, and pitch, were tested with this method to compare the efficiency of hovering frequencies between simulated models.
