    Floquet bound states around defects and adatoms in graphene

    Recent studies have focused on laser-induced gaps in graphene which have been shown to have a topological origin, thereby hosting robust states at the sample edges. While the focus has remained mainly on these topological chiral edge states, the Floquet bound states around defects lack a detailed study. In this paper we present such a study covering large defects of different shape and also vacancy-like defects and adatoms at the dynamical gap at Ω/2\hbar\Omega/2 (Ω\hbar\Omega being the photon energy). Our results, based on analytical calculations as well as numerics for full tight-binding models, show that the bound states are chiral and appear in a number which grows with the defect size. Furthermore, while the bound states exist regardless the type of the defect's edge termination (zigzag, armchair, mixed), the spectrum is strongly dependent on it. In the case of top adatoms, the bound states quasi-energies depend on the adatoms energy. The appearance of such bound states might open the door to the presence of topological effects on the bulk transport properties of dirty graphene.Comment: 16 pages, 14 figure

    Central nervous system involvement in Hodgkin lymphoma is extremely rare, especially in nodular lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin lymphoma (NLPHL), which usually carries a favorable prognosis. Here we report a case of a young patient with NLPHL, who developed a progressive and fatal neurological deterioration requiring a very extensive work-up including two biopsies to obtain the diagnosis of T-cell/histiocyte-rich large B-cell lymphoma like transformation. This report, which includes post-mortem analysis, highlights the correlations between clinical, radiological, and biological data but also the difficulties encountered in reaching the correct diagnosis

    On the photometric variability of blue supergiants in NGC 300 and its impact on the Flux-weighted Gravity-Luminosity Relationship

    We present a study of the photometric variability of spectroscopically confirmed supergiants in NGC 300, comprising 28 epochs extending over a period of five months. We find 15 clearly photometrically variable blue supergiants in a sample of nearly 70 such stars, showing maximum light amplitudes ranging from 0.08 to 0.23 magnitudes in the V band, and one variable red supergiant. We show their light curves, and determine semi-periods for two A2 Ia stars. Assuming that the observed changes correspond to similar variations in the bolometric luminosity, we test for the influence of this variability on the Flux-weighted Gravity--Luminosity Relationship and find a negligible effect, showing that the calibration of this relationship, which has the potential to measure extragalactic distances at the Cepheid accuracy level, is not affected by the stellar photometric variability in any significant way.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables.     Early alveolar macrophage response and IL-1R-dependent T cell priming determine transmissibility of Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains

Publisher Copyright: © 2022, The Author(s).Mechanisms underlying variability in transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains remain undefined. By characterizing high and low transmission strains of M.tuberculosis in mice, we show here that high transmission M.tuberculosis strain induce rapid IL-1R-dependent alveolar macrophage migration from the alveolar space into the interstitium and that this action is key to subsequent temporal events of early dissemination of bacteria to the lymph nodes, Th1 priming, granulomatous response and bacterial control. In contrast, IL-1R-dependent alveolar macrophage migration and early dissemination of bacteria to lymph nodes is significantly impeded in infection with low transmission M.tuberculosis strain; these events promote the development of Th17 immunity, fostering neutrophilic inflammation and increased bacterial replication. Our results suggest that by inducing granulomas with the potential to develop into cavitary lesions that aids bacterial escape into the airways, high transmission M.tuberculosis strain is poised for greater transmissibility. These findings implicate bacterial heterogeneity as an important modifier of TB disease manifestations and transmission.publishersversionpublishe

    Thermal Stability of Beta Phase in a Cu-Al-Be Shape Memory Alloy

    Thermal stability of the beta Cu-Al-Be phase with an eutectoid composition was studied by thermoelectric power measurements. Depending on the aging temperature, precipitates of the α2 and γ2 phases were identified by optical and electron microscopies. From these results, C curves were deduced in a TTT diagram and a peritectic β→α2 transition temperature was deduceed to be close to 275°C
