Process for preparing liquid metal electrical contact device
The parts of an electrical contact device are treated by sputter etching to remove the parent metal oxide. Prior to exposure of the electrodes to any oxygen, a sacrificial metal is sputter deposited on the parts. Preferably this sacrificial metal is one that oxidizes slowly and is readily dissolved by the liquid metal. The sacrificial metal may then be removed from unwanted areas. The remainder of the ring and the probe to be wet by the liquid metal are submerged in the liquid metal or the liquid metal is flushed over these areas, preferably while they are being slightly abraded, unitl all the sacrificial material on these portions is wet by the liquid metal. In doing so the liquid metal dissolves the sacrificial metal and permanently wets the parent metal. Preferred materials used in the process and for the electrodes of electrical contact devices are high purity (99.0%) nickel or AISI type 304 stainless steel for the electrical contact devices, gallium as the liquid metal, and gold as the sacrificial material
What sow the seeds of hardship for the poorest of the poor? Towards increasing the performance of informal sector in war affected regions of Sri Lanka
Less performance of informal sector among the poorest of the poor in the war affected regions in Sri Lanka has been caused by many reasons. Findings of an exploratory study and the factor analysis revealed four important factors namely training and skills, education, social and economic. As the extension of the exploratory study, to test this prediction empirically with a larger sample size, the present study applied a survey method using a questionnaire especially designed based on the initial exploratory study which was conducted inductively. A sample of 300 women headed households engaged in the informal sector participated in this study. The results indicates these four factors significantly predict the performance of informal sector. More specifically, while, economic factors contribute more to the performance of the informal sector, training contributes less. The study also discussed the implication of findings and area for future research. Based on the findings and conclusions, few recommendations are also made to enhance the performance of women headed households in the informal sector

High pressure compressor component performance report
A compressor optimization study defined a 10 stage configuration with a 22.6:1 pressure ratio, an adiabatic efficiency goal of 86.1%, and a polytropic efficiency of 90.6%; the corrected airflow is 53.5 kg/s. Subsequent component testing included three full scale tests: a six stage rig test, a 10 stage rig test, and another 10 stage rig test completed in the second quarter of 1982. Information from these tests is used to select the configuration for a core engine test and an integrated core/low spool test. The test results will also provide data base for the flight propulsion system. The results of the test series with both aerodynamic and mechanical performance of each compressor build are presented. The second 10 stage compressor adiabatic efficiency was 0.848 at a cruise operating point versus a test goal of 0.846
One-nucleon transfer reactions and the optical potential
We provide a summary of new developments in the area of direct reaction
theory with a particular focus on one-nucleon transfer reactions. We provide a
status of the methods available for describing (d,p) reactions. We discuss the
effects of nonlocality in the optical potential in transfer reactions. The
results of a purely phenomenological potential and the optical potential
obtained from the dispersive optical model are compared; both point toward the
importance of including nonlocality in transfer reactions explicitly. Given the
large ambiguities associated with optical potentials, we discuss some new
developments toward the quantification of this uncertainty. We conclude with
some general comments and a brief account of new advances that are in the

The Micro-Arcsecond Scintillation-Induced Variability (MASIV) Survey II: The First Four Epochs
We report on the variability of 443 flat spectrum, compact radio sources
monitored using the VLA for 3 days in 4 epochs at ~ 4 month intervals at 5 GHz
as part of the Micro-Arcsecond Scintillation-Induced Variability (MASIV)
survey. Over half of these sources exhibited 2-10% rms variations on timescales
over 2 days. We analyzed the variations by two independent methods, and find
that the rms variability amplitudes of the sources correlate with the emission
measure in the ionized Interstellar Medium along their respective lines of
sight. We thus link the variations with interstellar scintillation of
components of these sources, with some (unknown) fraction of the total flux
density contained within a compact region of angular diameter in the range
10-50 micro-arcseconds. We also find that the variations decrease for high mean
flux density sources and, most importantly, for high redshift sources. The
decrease in variability is probably due either to an increase in the apparent
diameter of the source, or a decrease in the flux density of the compact
fraction beyond z ~ 2. Here we present a statistical analysis of these results,

Dual-Frequency Observations of 140 Compact, Flat-Spectrum Active Galactic Nuclei for Scintillation-Induced Variability
The 4.9 GHz Micro-Arcsecond Scintillation-Induced Variability (MASIV) Survey
detected a drop in Interstellar Scintillation (ISS) for sources at redshifts z
> 2, indicating an apparent increase in angular diameter or a decrease in flux
density of the most compact components of these sources, relative to their
extended emission. This can result from intrinsic source size effects or
scatter broadening in the Intergalactic Medium (IGM), in excess of the expected
(1+z)^0.5 angular diameter scaling of brightness temperature limited sources
due to cosmological expansion. We report here 4.9 GHz and 8.4 GHz observations
and data analysis for a sample of 140 compact, flat-spectrum sources which may
allow us to determine the origin of this angular diameter-redshift relation by
exploiting their different wavelength dependences. In addition to using ISS as
a cosmological probe, the observations provide additional insight into source
morphologies and the characteristics of ISS. As in the MASIV Survey, the
variability of the sources is found to be significantly correlated with
line-of-sight H-alpha intensities, confirming its link with ISS. For 25
sources, time delays of about 0.15 to 3 days are observed between the
scintillation patterns at both frequencies, interpreted as being caused by a
shift in core positions when probed at different optical depths. Significant
correlation is found between ISS amplitudes and source spectral index; in
particular, a large drop in ISS amplitudes is observed at spectral indices of <
-0.4 confirming that steep spectrum sources scintillate less. We detect a
weakened redshift dependence of ISS at 8.4 GHz over that at 4.9 GHz, with the
mean variance at 4-day timescales reduced by a factor of 1.8 in the z > 2
sources relative to the z < 2 sources, as opposed to the factor of 3 decrease
observed at 4.9 GHz. This suggests scatter broadening in the IGM.Comment: 30 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in the Astronomical

Pleiotropy of FRIGIDA enhances the potential for multivariate adaptation.
An evolutionary response to selection requires genetic variation; however, even if it exists, then the genetic details of the variation can constrain adaptation. In the simplest case, unlinked loci and uncorrelated phenotypes respond directly to multivariate selection and permit unrestricted paths to adaptive peaks. By contrast, 'antagonistic' pleiotropic loci may constrain adaptation by affecting variation of many traits and limiting the direction of trait correlations to vectors that are not favoured by selection. However, certain pleiotropic configurations may improve the conditions for adaptive evolution. Here, we present evidence that the Arabidopsis thaliana gene FRI (FRIGIDA) exhibits 'adaptive' pleiotropy, producing trait correlations along an axis that results in two adaptive strategies. Derived, low expression FRI alleles confer a 'drought escape' strategy owing to fast growth, low water use efficiency and early flowering. By contrast, a dehydration avoidance strategy is conferred by the ancestral phenotype of late flowering, slow growth and efficient water use during photosynthesis. The dehydration avoidant phenotype was recovered when genotypes with null FRI alleles were transformed with functional alleles.
