Use of ultramicroindentation to evaluate the degradation of sputtered coatings

    Get PDF
The aim of this research work was to study the influence of chemical degradation on the mechanical properties of the non-degraded zones of sputtered W-N-Ti coatings. For this, an ultramicroindentation technique has been used before and after degradation, either on the zones between the pits in the corroded samples, or on the non-oxidised layers after removal of the top degraded layers. By using different applied loads it was possible to obtain results with and without the influence of the substrate. Thus, two types of results were obtained, those determined by using an empirical model, which eliminates the influence of the substrate, and those measured directly.Very small differences of less than 20% were obtained in the measured values before and after degradation, indicating that the non-degraded zones maintain their as-deposited mechanical properties.http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/B6TW4-3VGSFTN-Y/1/d6747ea11390bd13ea164c97933b791

Fungal Meningitis in an Immunocompetent Patient

    Get PDF
Cryptococcal meningitis is a rare entity among immunocompetent hosts but, when it occurs, it is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Clinical presen- tation as well as the course of the disease is usually subtle and indolent with headache and altered mental status. The authors present the case of a 59-year-old man, who sought medical help with a 2-week history of headaches accompanied by nausea and visual and hearing disturbances. On admission the patient was afebrile, presented visual and hearing deficits and had a normal magnetic resonance image of the brain. A lumbar puncture was performed and microscopic examination of the cerebrospinal fluid revealed yeasts that were identified as Cryptococcus spp. and later, by means of molecular biology techniques, as Cryptococcus neoformans, var. grubii. The patient was treated with liposomal amphotericin B plus fluconazole for 28 weeks. At follow-up after 1 year the patient was asymptomatic and received fluconazole 400 mg/day as prophylactic therapy. The outcome of Cryptococcus infections in immunocompetent hosts is reported to be poor as a result of a delayed diagnosis and suboptimal initial antifungal therapy. The influence of the normal immune response is unclear

Effects of alkaline and acid solutions on glass/epoxy composites

    Get PDF
Composite structures can be exposed to a range of corrosive environments during their in-service life, which causes degradation in terms of material properties. The effect of alkaline and acid solutions on the GRP mechanical properties can be found in open literature, but the studies presented are not sufficient to establish a full knowledge of this subject. In this paper the flexural properties and the impact strength of a glass fibre/epoxy composite after immersion in hydrochloric acid (HCl) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) were analysed. Independently of the solution, the flexural strength and the flexural modulus decrease with the exposure time. However, alkaline solution promotes higher decrease of the flexural properties than the acid solution. The same tendency was observed for impact strength

Palliative splenic irradiation for symptomatic splenomegaly in non-Hodgkin lymphoma

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Splenic marginal zone lymphoma, an uncommon subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), is usually present with symptomatic splenomegaly. Although splenectomy has long been considered the first-line therapy in symptomatic or cytopenic patients, it can lead to significant morbidity and mortality. Splenic irradiation is an option for patients who have a poor response to systemic therapy and/or are not surgical candidates. In this paper, we present a case report of a patient who received splenic radiotherapy for symptomatic splenomegaly. METHODS: An 85-year-old Caucasian man with a 4 year history of low-grade NHL presented with progressive pancytopenia, significant weight loss and symptomatic splenomegaly (abdominal discomfort, sense of fullness and limitation of mobility due to spleen size). The patient refused splenectomy and, in December 2017, was referred to palliative splenic radiotherapy. He was initially treated with five fractions of one Grey (Gy) in order to evaluate clinical and haematology response. After that, 1.5 Gy daily, 5 days a week for 3 weeks. 3D conformal radiotherapy, multiple fields and mixed energy (6 and 15 Mv) were used. RESULTS: Radiotherapy allowed significant splenic reduction to almost half the size, resolving abdominal discomfort and improving quality of life. There was no decline of haemoglobin, leukocytes and platelet counts; in fact, there was a marginal increase. CONCLUSION: Palliative splenic irradiation was well tolerated confirming that it is a safe treatment option for palliation of symptomatic splenomegaly. Thereby, splenic irradiation should be strongly considered in the management of symptomatic splenomegaly, for selected patients who are refractory to or unsuitable for other options or when the patient refuses other treatments.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Development of new decorative coatings based on gold nanoparticles dispersed in an amorphous TiO2 dielectric matrix

The present work is devoted to the optical properties of Au:TiO2 thin films in order to clarify the role of the Au clusters inclusions in the TiO2 dielectric matrix. Three series of films containing about 30 at.% (29.2), 20 at. % (19.8) and 10 at.% (9.3) Au were deposited by dc reactive magnetron sputtering. On thermal annealing in the range from 300 to 800 °C in protective atmosphere, significant changes on the crystalline phases and clusters dimensions were detected. The most promising optical behavior was found for the film 20% Au:TiO2, where the films revealed some colour changes, evolving from several shades of grey to different tones of red. This change in the optical behaviour of the films was found to be correlated with a cluster size increase from 2 to 17 nm. For higher size values (>20 nm) the films, independently of the Au content, showed a golden appearance colour. The optical changes were confirmed by reflectivity and CIELab colour measurements. Regarding the films with 10 and 30 at.% Au, the results confirmed that there is an evident range of compositions and clusters size where the SPR is more evident. Sample A (10 at.% Au) it seems to be in the lower limit of the SPR showing a typical interferometric behavior on the reflectivity measurements, similar to the TiO2 optical behavior. Regarding the 30 at.% Au one, the results seems to indicate that the amount of gold particles and their grain size is in the upper limit to show a SPR activity.Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) - PTDC/CTM/70037/200

The relative age effect among elite youth competitive swimmers

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to analyse the relative age effect (RAE) in competitive swimming. The best 50 Portuguese swimmers (12- to 18-year-olds) for the main individual swimming pool events of both genders were considered. Analysis was conducted on 7813 swimming event participants, taking account of respective swimmer birth dates and the Fédération Internationale de Natation points gained. Differences in the distribution of birth dates by quarter year were determined using the Chi-square. A one-way analysis of variance ANOVA was used to test for differences measured in points between individuals by quarterly birth year intervals. A two-way analysis of variance ANOVA was also conducted to test the interaction between gender and seasonal birth date with regard to performance. The results show an inequitable distribution (p<0.01) of birth dates by quarter for almost all age groups and both genders. However, the distribution of birth dates by quarter for each considered swim event shows that RAE seems to exist only for 12-year-old females and 12- to 15-year-old males. Analysing mean swimming performance, post-hoc results (p<0.01) show no consistency in RAE. Higher performance occurs among older swimmers only in 100 m butterfly (female 1998, 1st≠2nd quarter, p=0.003). The results also show no interaction between gender and seasonal birth date (p<0.01). Findings of this study show that a higher number of swimmers, particular males, are born in the first two quarters of the year, although there is mostly no effect of seasonal birth date on performance differences within the top 50 swimmers.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Image and color recognition using amorphous silicon p-i-n photodiodes

    Get PDF
Large area hydrogenated amorphous silicon single and stacked p-i-n structures with low conductivity doped layers are proposed as monochrome and color image sensors. The layers of the structures are based on amorphous silicon alloys (a-Si(x)C(1-x):H). The current-voltage characteristics and the spectral sensitivity under different bias conditions are analyzed. The output characteristics are evaluated under different read-out voltages and scanner wavelengths. To extract information on image shape, intensity and color, a modulated light beam scans the sensor active area at three appropriate bias voltages and the photoresponse in each scanning position ("sub-pixel") is recorded. The investigation of the sensor output under different scanner wavelengths and varying electrical bias reveals that the response can be tuned, thus enabling color separation. The operation of the sensor is exemplified and supported by a numerical simulation

Enhanced short wavelength response in laser-scanned-photodiode image sensor using an a-SiC : H/a-Si : H tandem structure

We report in this paper the recent advances we obtained in optimizing a color image sensor based on the laser-scanned-photodiode (LSP) technique. A novel device structure based on a a-SiC:H/a-Si:H pin/pin tandem structure has been tested for a proper color separation process that takes advantage on the different filtering properties due to the different light penetration depth at different wavelengths a-SM and a-SiC:H. While the green and the red images give, in comparison with previous tested structures, a weak response, this structure shows a very good recognition of blue color under reverse bias, leaving a good margin for future device optimization in order to achieve a complete and satisfactory RGB image mapping. Experimental results about the spectral collection efficiency are presented and discussed from the point of view of the color sensor applications. The physics behind the device functioning is explained by recurring to a numerical simulation of the internal electrical configuration of the device
