We determined high-pressure melting curves for Feā‚ƒC, Feā‚‡Cā‚ƒ and the Fe-Feā‚ƒC eutectic using laser-heated diamond anvil cell techniques. The principal criterion for melting is the observation of plateaus in the temperature vs. laser power function, which is an expected behavior at isobaric invariant points (e.g. congruent, eutectic, or peritectic melting) as increased power provides the latent heat of melting. We verified this technique by reproducing the melting curves of well-studied congruently melting compounds at high pressure (Fe, Pt, FeS, Pb), and by comparison with melting determinations made using thermocouple-based large-volume press techniques. The incongruent melting curve of Feā‚ƒC measured to 70Ā GPa has an apparent change in slope at ~ 8Ā GPa, which we attribute to stabilization of FeCā‚ƒ at the solidus and the creation of a P-T invariant point. We observe that Feā‚‡Cā‚ƒ melts at higher temperatures than Feā‚ƒC between 14 and 52Ā GPa and has a steep P-T slope, and on this basis predicts an expanding field of Feā‚‡Cā‚ƒ + liquid with pressure. The Fe-Feā‚ƒC eutectic melting curve measured to 70Ā GPa agrees closely with multi-anvil data and thermodynamic calculations. We also measured the eutectic composition as a function of pressure using an in situ X-radiographic imaging technique, and find a rapid drop in carbon in the eutectic composition above about 20Ā GPa, generally consistent with previous thermodynamic calculations, and predict that the eutectic lies close to pure iron by ~ 50Ā GPa. We use these observations to extrapolate phase relations to core-relevant pressures. Convergence of the Feā‚ƒC and Fe-Feā‚ƒC eutectic melting curves indicate that Feā‚ƒC is replaced at the solidus by Feā‚‡Cā‚ƒ at ~ 120Ā GPa, forming another P-T invariant point and a new eutectic between Fe and Feā‚‡Cā‚ƒ. Thus, Feā‚ƒC is unlikely to be an important crystallizing phase at core conditions, whereas Feā‚‡Cā‚ƒ could become an important crystallizing phase.11 page(s

Hydrous silicate melts and the deep mantle H2O cycle

We report ab initio atomistic simulations of hydrous silicate melts under deep upper mantle to shallow lower mantle conditions and use them to parameterise density and viscosity across the ternary system MgO-SiO2-H2O (MSH). On the basis of phase relations in the MSH system, primary hydrous partial melts of the mantle have 40-50 mol% H2O. Our results show that these melts will be positively buoyant at the upper and lower boundaries of the mantle transition zone except in very iron-rich compositions, where ā‰³ 75% Mg is substituted by Fe. Hydrous partial melts will also be highly inviscid. Our results indicate that if melting occurs when wadsleyite transforms to olivine at 410 km, melts will be buoyant and ponding of melts is unexpected. Box models of mantle circulation incorporating the upward mobility of partial melts above and below the transition zone suggest that the upper mantle becomes efficiently hydrated at the expense of the transition zone such that large differences in H2O concentration between the upper mantle, transition zone and lower mantle are difficult to maintain on timescales of mantle recycling. The MORB source mantle with āˆ¼0.02-0.04 wt% H2O may be indicative of the H2O content of the transition zone and lower mantle, resulting in a bulk mantle H2O content of the order 0.5 to 1 ocean mass, which is consistent with geochemical constraints and estimates of subduction ingassing

Prevalence estimates of neurodevelopmental disorders in Japan: A community sample questionnaire study

    Get PDF
Abstract Aim The prevalence estimates of neurodevelopmental disorders have been calculated by questionnaire surveys scored by a single rater, which introduces inherent rater biases. The present study aimed to estimate the prevalence and comorbidity rates of four neurodevelopmental disorders based both on parent and teacher rating scales. Methods We performed a community sample survey recruiting 3852 children aged 6?9?years. Both parents and teachers evaluated clinical conditions in children using questionnaire-style scales. These scales with the cut-off values were used to estimate the prevalence and comorbidity rates of attention deficit / hyperactive disorder, autism spectrum disorder, specific learning disorder (or developmental dyslexia), and developmental coordination disorder. Results The prevalence estimates were separately confirmed according to the raters. Some estimates were higher than those in the previous studies conducted in other countries. We also found a large disagreement between the parent and teacher rating scores. Moreover, the degree of agreement between two raters varied depending on the severity of clinical condition in the child. Conclusion These estimates are the first findings based on evaluating children by two raters. The prevalence and comorbidity estimates are informative to the researchers and clinicians of pediatric neurology. The disagreement between two raters raises questions about previous estimates of neurodevelopmental disorders. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.Peer reviewe

An exploration of the experiences and utility of functional electrical stimulation for foot drop in people with multiple sclerosis

    Get PDF
Purpose: Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is effective in improving walking in people with multiple sclerosis (MS) with foot drop. There is limited research exploring peopleā€™s experiences of using this device. This study aims to explore the utility, efficacy, acceptability, and impact on daily life of the device in people with MS. Methods: An interpretative phenomenological approach was employed. Ten participants who had used FES for 12 months were interviewed. Transcripts were analysed, and emergent themes identified. Results: Nine participants continued to use the device. Three relevant super-ordinate themes were identified; impact of functional electrical stimulation, sticking with functional electrical stimulation, and autonomy and control. Participants reported challenges using the device; however, all reported positive physical and psychological benefits. Intrinsic and external influences such as; access to professional help, the influence of others, an individualā€™s ability to adapt, and experiences using the device, influenced their decisions to continue with the device. A thematic model of these factors was developed. Conclusions: This study has contributed to our understanding of people with MS experiences of using the device and will help inform prescribing decisions and support the continued, appropriate use of FES over the longer term

Peroxisomes in intestinal and gallbladder epithelial cells of the stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus L. (Teleostei)

    Get PDF
The occurrence of microbodies in the epithelial cells of the intestine and gallbladder of the stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus L., is described. In the intestine the organelles are predominantly located in the apical and perinuclear zone of the cells and may contain small crystalline cores. In gallbladder epithelial cells the microbodies are distributed randomly. The latter organdies are characterized by the presence of large crystalloids. Cytochemical and biochemical experiments show that catalase and D-amino acid oxidase are main matrix components of the microbodies in both the intestinal and gallbladder epithelia. These organelles therefore are considered peroxisomes. In addition, in intestinal mucosa but not in gallbladder epithelium a low activity of palmitoyl CoA oxidase was detected biochemically. Urate oxidase and L-Ī± hydroxy acid oxidase activities could not be demonstrated.

The NiSi melting curve to 70 GPa

The melting curve of NiSi has been determined to 70 GPa on the basis of laser-heated diamond anvil cell (LH-DAC) experiments in which changes in the gradient of temperature vs. laser power functions were used as the melting criterion. The melting curve was corroborated with in situ X-ray diffraction experiments in both the LH-DAC and multi-anvil press in which the appearance of liquid diffuse scattering in the diffraction patterns was used as the melting criterion. At all pressures, the NiSi melting curve is lower than that of FeSi, with the difference in melting temperature reaching a maximum of 900 K at 14 GPa. The location of the B31 + B20 + L triple point has been constrained to 12 Ā± 2 GPa and 1550 Ā± 100 K and the B20 + B2 + L triple point to 28.5 Ā± 1.5 GPa and 2165 Ā± 60 K. On the basis of the in situ LH-DAC experiments the Clapeyron slope of the B20 ā†’ B2 transition is estimated at āˆ’67 MPa Kāˆ’1. Extrapolation of the B2-NiSi liquidus to core-mantle boundary (CMB) conditions (135 GPa) suggests the melting point of NiSi (3700 Ā± 400 K) will be only marginally lower than that of isostructural FeSi (4000 Ā± 200 K). Thus any (Fe,Ni)Si solid solution present within the Dā€³ layer is expected to remain solid, with the possible exception of the very hottest region adjacent to the CMB

Exhausted CD4āŗ T Cells during Malaria Exhibit Reduced mTORc1 Activity Correlated with Loss of T-bet Expression

CD4āŗ T cell functional inhibition (exhaustion) is a hallmark of malaria and correlates with impaired parasite control and infection chronicity. However, the mechanisms of CD4āŗ T cell exhaustion are still poorly understood. In this study, we show that Ag-experienced (Ag-exp) CD4āŗ T cell exhaustion during Plasmodium yoelii nonlethal infection occurs alongside the reduction in mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) activity and restriction in CD4+ T cell glycolytic capacity. We demonstrate that the loss of glycolytic metabolism and mTOR activity within the exhausted Ag-expCD4āŗ T cell population during infection coincides with reduction in T-bet expression. T-bet was found to directly bind to and control the transcription of various mTOR and metabolism-related genes within effector CD4āŗ T cells. Consistent with this, Ag-expTh1 cells exhibited significantly higher and sustained mTOR activity than effector T-bet- (non-Th1) Ag-expT cells throughout the course of malaria. We identified mTOR to be redundant for sustaining T-bet expression in activated Th1 cells, whereas mTOR was necessary but not sufficient for maintaining IFN-Ī³ production by Th1 cells. Immunotherapy targeting PD-1, CTLA-4, and IL-27 blocked CD4āŗ T cell exhaustion during malaria infection and was associated with elevated T-bet expression and a concomitant increased CD4āŗ T cell glycolytic metabolism. Collectively, our data suggest that mTOR activity is linked to T-bet in Ag-expCD4āŗ T cells but that reduction in mTOR activity may not directly underpin Ag-expTh1 cell loss and exhaustion during malaria infection. These data have implications for therapeutic reactivation of exhausted CD4āŗ T cells during malaria infection and other chronic conditions

We have mapped the nearby face on barred spiral galaxy, M83 in the bright [CII] 158 Ī¼m, [OI] 63 and 146 Ī¼m, [NII] 122 Ī¼m, and [OIII] 88 Ī¼m fine-structure lines with the Long Wavelength Spectrometer (LWS) on ISO. The maps are nearly fully sampled, and cover the inner 6.75' x 6' region - essentially the entire optical disk. We also obtained a full LWS grating scan of the nucleus. The lines are detectable over the entire disk, and enhanced at the nucleus, where the [OI] 63 Ī¼m and [NII] lines are particularly strong. At the nucleus, the line ratios indicate a strong starburst headed by O9 stars. Surprisingly, the [OI] and [CII] line emission (from photodissociation regions) is not enhanced relative to [NII] (from low density HII regions) on the spiral arms. The line ratios are the same for the spiral arms and interarm regions. We find very strong emission in the [OIII] 88 Ī¼m, [OI] 146 Ī¼m, and [CII] lines at the intersection of the bar and spiral arm to the SW indicating particularly strong star formation activity there. The [OI] 63 Ī¼m/146 Ī¼m line ratio is quite small there likely the result of self absorption in the 63 Ī¼m line by enveloping clouds. The total luminosity of this emission peak is 1.2 x 109 Lodo
