Excitation of the molecular gas in the nuclear region of M82
We present high-resolution HIFI spectroscopy of the nucleus of the archetypical starburst galaxy M 82. Six ^(12)CO lines, 2 ^(13)CO lines and 4 fine-structure lines have been detected. Besides showing the effects of the overall velocity structure of the nuclear region, the line profiles also indicate the presence of multiple components with different optical depths, temperatures, and densities in the observing beam. The data have been interpreted using a grid of PDR models. It is found that the majority of the molecular gas is in low density (n = 10^(3.5) cm^(-3)) clouds, with column densities of N_H = 10^(21.5) cm^(-2) and a relatively low UV radiation field (G_0 = 10^2). The remaining gas is predominantly found in clouds with higher densities (n = 10^5 cm^(-3)) and radiation fields (G_0 = 10^(2.75)), but somewhat lower column densities (N_H = 10^(21.2) cm^(-2)). The highest J CO lines are dominated by a small (1% relative surface filling) component, with an even higher density (n = 10^6 cm^(-3)) and UV field (G_0 = 10^(3.25)). These results show the strength of multi-component modelling for interpretating the integrated properties of galaxies
Anti-Fall: A Non-intrusive and Real-time Fall Detector Leveraging CSI from Commodity WiFi Devices
Fall is one of the major health threats and obstacles to independent living
for elders, timely and reliable fall detection is crucial for mitigating the
effects of falls. In this paper, leveraging the fine-grained Channel State
Information (CSI) and multi-antenna setting in commodity WiFi devices, we
design and implement a real-time, non-intrusive, and low-cost indoor fall
detector, called Anti-Fall. For the first time, the CSI phase difference over
two antennas is identified as the salient feature to reliably segment the fall
and fall-like activities, both phase and amplitude information of CSI is then
exploited to accurately separate the fall from other fall-like activities.
Experimental results in two indoor scenarios demonstrate that Anti-Fall
consistently outperforms the state-of-the-art approach WiFall, with 10% higher

Theory of Drop Formation
We consider the motion of an axisymmetric column of Navier-Stokes fluid with
a free surface. Due to surface tension, the thickness of the fluid neck goes to
zero in finite time. After the singularity, the fluid consists of two halves,
which constitute a unique continuation of the Navier-Stokes equation through
the singular point. We calculate the asymptotic solutions of the Navier-Stokes
equation, both before and after the singularity. The solutions have scaling
form, characterized by universal exponents as well as universal scaling
functions, which we compute without adjustable parameters
Effectiveness of the ADEC as a level 2 screening test for young children with suspected autism spectrum disorders in a clinical setting
Background The Autism Detection in Early Childhood (ADEC) is a clinician-administered, Level 2 screening tool. A retrospective file audit was used to investigate its clinical effectiveness.
Method Toddlers referred to an Australian child development service between 2008 and 2010 (N?=?53, M age?=?32.2 months) were screened with the ADEC. Their medical records were reviewed in 2013 when their mean age was 74.5 months, and the original ADEC screening results were compared with later diagnostic outcomes.
Results The ADEC had good sensitivity (87.5%) and moderate specificity (62%). Three behaviours predicted autism spectrum disorders (ASDs): response to name, gaze switching, and gaze monitoring (p???.001).
Conclusions The ADEC shows promise as a screening tool that can discriminate between young children with ASDs and those who have specific communication disorders or developmental delays that persist into middle childhood but who do not meet the criteria for ASDs
Density functional theory study of the nematic-isotropic transition in an hybrid cell
We have employed the Density Functional Theory formalism to investigate the
nematic-isotropic capillary transitions of a nematogen confined by walls that
favor antagonist orientations to the liquid crystal molecules (hybrid cell). We
analyse the behavior of the capillary transition as a function of the
fluid-substrate interactions and the pore width. In addition to the usual
capillary transition between isotropic-like to nematic-like states, we find
that this transition can be suppressed when one substrate is wet by the
isotropic phase and the other by the nematic phase. Under this condition the
system presents interface-like states which allow to continuously transform the
nematic-like phase to the isotropic-like phase without undergoing a phase
transition. Two different mechanisms for the disappearance of the capillary
transition are identified. When the director of the nematic-like state is
homogeneously planar-anchored with respect to the substrates, the capillary
transition ends up in a critical point. This scenario is analogous to the
observed in Ising models when confined in slit pores with opposing surface
fields which have critical wetting transitions. When the nematic-like state has
a linearly distorted director field, the capillary transition continuously

Perturbative behaviour of a vortex in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate
We derive a set of equations that describe the shape and behaviour of a
single perturbed vortex line in a Bose-Einstein condensate. Through the use of
a matched asymptotic expansion and a unique coordinate transform a relation for
a vortex's velocity, anywhere along the line, is found in terms of the
trapping, rotation, and distortion of the line at that location. This relation
is then used to find a set of differential equations that give the line's
specific shape and motion. This work corrects a previous similar derivation by
Anatoly A. Svidzinsky and Alexander L. Fetter [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{62}, 063617
(2000)], and enables a comparison with recent numerical results.Comment: 12 pages with 3 figure
Neutron diffraction studies of magnetostrictive Fe–Ga alloy ribbons
Melt-spun Fe–Ga ribbons were prepared and some ribbons were annealed at 1000 °C for 1 h then
slowly cooled to room temperature. X-ray diffraction patterns revealed no evidence of texture and
only bcc phase in the as-quenched ribbons. However, high-resolution neutron diffraction patterns
gave more information on the structure of these ribbons. Only diffractions from the disordered bcc
A2 phase were found in as-quenched ribbons with 15, 17.5, and 19.5 at. % Ga content, without any
trace of satellite peaks or splitting peaks from the proposed Ga–Ga pairing superlattice structure.
The broadening of the base of the �110� peaks for all samples except the as-quenched 15 at. % Ga
ribbon might indicate the existence of some kind of short range ordering. Ribbons developed L12
phase after annealing especially in the Fe 19.5 at. % Ga ribbon where the formation of L12 phase
reduced the Ga content in the remaining A2 phase and decreased its lattice parameter dramatically.
D03 phase formed in the as-quenched 22.5 at. % Ga ribbon and the following annealing treatment
transformed more A2 phase into D03 phase
A new chiral electro-optic effect: Sum-frequency generation from optically active liquids in the presence of a dc electric field
We report the observation of sum-frequency signals that depend linearly on an
applied electrostatic field and that change sign with the handedness of an
optically active solution. This recently predicted chiral electro-optic effect
exists in the electric-dipole approximation. The static electric field gives
rise to an electric-field-induced sum-frequency signal (an achiral third-order
process) that interferes with the chirality-specific sum-frequency at
second-order. The cross-terms linear in the electrostatic field constitute the
effect and may be used to determine the absolute sign of second- and
third-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities in isotropic media.Comment: Submitted to Physical Revie
Environmental management accounting implementation in environmentally sensitive industries in Malaysia
This research investigates the level of EMA implementation in companies within environmentally sensitive industries in Malaysia, as well as gaining insights into pressures for implementation. It was found that there are elements of environmental-related management accounting within some of the organizations in which interviews were conducted. Implementation was driven by a motivation to reduce costs rather than environmental conservation. Apart from that, companies' reactions to environmental issues stem from pressures from customers who demand environmentally sensitive workplaces, procedures and processes in the companies with which they are in business
