EMPOWERING MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS A CASE STUDY ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR LEARNING AND WIDA FRAMEWORKS TO ENHANCE ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT AND CONTENT LEARNING
This dissertation explores the implementation of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and WIDA frameworks by elementary education teacher candidates during their internships in classrooms characterized by the presence of Multilingual Learners (MLLs). This embedded case study focuses on the Spring and Fall cohorts of 2023, particularly focusing on four selected participants. Through meticulously examining survey responses, documents, classroom observations, and interviews, this research comprehensively analyzes the candidates’ experiences, perceptions, challenges, and facilitators in implementing UDL and WIDA frameworks. The study reveals a significant evolution in the teacher candidates’ understanding and implementation of these frameworks, transitioning from initial unfamiliarity to a more confident integration into their teaching practices. Key findings highlight effective pedagogical strategies aligned with UDL principles and WIDA English Language Development (ELD) standards, such as differentiated instruction, linguistic scaffolding, the use of visual aids, and technology. The research also identifies practical challenges in framework implementation, including mentoring, time and classroom resource constraints, and the difficulty of providing individualized support to each student. Despite these challenges, the teacher candidates demonstrate a commitment to creating inclusive and linguistically responsive learning environments, underscored by their positive perceptions of the impact of UDL and WIDA on MLLs’ educational experiences and outcomes. The findings contribute valuable insights into the complexities of supporting MLLs in academic settings and emphasize the transformative potential of UDL and WIDA frameworks in fostering inclusive and effective teaching practices. Implications for educators, policymakers, and researchers emphasize the need for comprehensive professional development in UDL and WIDA frameworks and advocating for integrating these frameworks in teacher education programs. By elucidating the experiences of teacher candidates in integrating UDL and WIDA, this study advances the discourse on best practices for supporting MLLs, ultimately contributing to creating more equitable and responsive educational landscapes
Single Laser System Approach to Synthesizing and Printing Tin Oxide Nanoparticles for Printed Electronic Applications
The need for smaller and more efficient printed electronics is on the rise, and while nanoparticles are the clear next step in realizing this goal due to their unique properties that cannot be detected in their bulk form, research on how to use them effectively is still in its early stages. Through a manufacturing convergence approach, we aim to develop a system that can process raw materials all the way through to the final application. In this study, we suggest modifying the setup design of an ultrafast pulsed laser system to demonstrate both the synthesis of Tin Oxide (SnO2) nanoparticles from bulk metal through Pulse Laser Ablation-in Liquid (PLA-L) and the printing of said nanoparticles utilizing the Laser Induced Forward Transfer (LIFT) method. The colloidal solution and printed outputs were tailored by adjusting not only the laser parameters but also the process parameters of both PLA and LIFT respectively. Experimental results show great potential for both synthesizing and printing the nanoparticles using a single laser system. This work establishes the single system concept, in which a single laser system can convert bulk metal into nanoparticles-based applications without the need for additional processing from other machines/systems, allowing for highly customizable prints with reduced lead times
New design parameters for biparabolic beach profiles (SW Cadiz, Spain)
165 profiles of seventy-one beaches along the Gulf of Cadiz (SW, Spain) were studied to improve the formulation of the beach profile in tidal seas. Maritime climate, degree of energy exposure and size of the sand grains were taken into account to study the two sections of the biparabolic profile. The objective of the study was the determination of more accurate formulations of the design parameters for the equilibrium profile that involves tidal seas. These formulations were modelled and validated based on existing profiles to quantify the error existing between the real profile and the modelling. This comparative analysis was extended by considering the formulations proposed by other authors. The best results were obtained with the proposal presented herein
The complex dust formation zone of the AGB star IRC+10216 probed with CARMA 0.25 arcsec angular resolution molecular observations
We present low spectral resolution molecular interferometric observations at
1.2 mm obtained with the Combined Array for Research in Millimetre-wave
Astronomy (CARMA) towards the C-rich AGB star IRC+10216. We have mapped the
emission of several lines of SiS, H13CN, SiO, and SiC2 in the ground and first
excited vibrational states with a high angular resolution of 0.25 arcsec. These
observations have allowed us to partially resolve the emission of the envelope
at distances from the star <50 stellar radii (R*), where the stellar wind is
mainly accelerated. The structure of the molecular emission has been modelled
with a 3D radiation transfer code. The emission of line SiS(v=0,J=14-13) is
best reproduced with a set of maser emitting arcs arranged between 5 and 20 R*.
The abundance of H13CN with respect to H2 decreases from 8e-7 at 1-5 R* to 3e-7
at 20 R*. The SiO observations are explained with an abundance <2e-8 in the
shell-like region between 1 and 5 R*. At this point, the SiO abundance sharply
increases up to (2-3)e-7. The vibrational temperature of SiO increases by a
factor of 2 due North-East between 20 and 50 R*. SiC2 is formed at the stellar
surface with an abundance of 8e-7 decreasing down to 8e-8 at 20 R* probably due
to depletion on to dust grains. Several asymmetries are found in the abundance
distributions of H13CN, SiO, and SiC2 which define three remarkable directions
(North-East, South-Southwest, and South-East) in the explored region of the
envelope. There are some differences between the red- and blue-shifted
emissions of these molecules suggesting the existence of additional asymmetries
in their abundance distributions along the line-of-sight.Comment: 22 pages, 16 figures, 9 tables, accepted for publication in MNRA
Synthesizing and Printing of Tin Oxide Nanoparticles Using a Single Ultrafast Laser System: A Feasibility Study
In laser-based manufacturing, processing setup customization is one of the popular approaches used to enhance diversity in material processing using a single laser. In this study, we propose setup design modification of an ultrafast laser system to demonstrate both Tin Oxide (SnO2) nanoparticle synthesis from bulk metal, and post printing of said nanoparticles using Laser Induced Forward Transfer (LIFT) method. Using the Pulse Laser Ablation in Liquid (PLA-L) method, nanoparticles were synthesized from a bulk tin metal cube submerged in distilled water. Such nanoparticles dispersed in water can form colloidal ink that can be used for different printed electronics applications. Pulse energy was varied to investigate the influence on morphological properties of the nanoparticles. It was observed that a decrease in average particle size, and an increase in the number of particles synthesized occurred as the pulse energy was increased. In our study, we adapted the same laser system to enable LIFT operation for printing of the SnO2 nanoparticles. The colloidal ink prepared was then used in LIFT method to study feasibility of printing the synthesized nanoparticles. By varying not only the laser parameters but process parameters such as coating thickness and drying time, printed results can be improved. Experimental results show great potential for both synthesizing and printing of the nanoparticles using a single laser system. This study serves as a proof of concept that a single laser system can turn bulk metal into nanoparticles-based applications without the need for extra processing from other machines/systems, opening the door to highly customizable prints with reduced lead times
Influence of Di erent Sieving Methods on Estimation of Sand Size Parameters
Sieving is one of the most used operational methods to determine sand size parameters
which are essential to analyze coastal dynamics. However, the influence of hand versus mechanical
shaking methods has not yet been studied. Herein, samples were taken from inside the hopper of
a trailing suction dredger and sieved by hand with sieves of 10 and 20 cm diameters on board the
dredger. Afterwards, these same samples were sieved with a mechanical shaker in the laboratory on
land. The results showed di erences for the main size parameters D50, standard deviation, skewness,
and kurtosis. Amongst the main results, it should be noted that the highest values for D50 and
kurtosis were given by the small sieves method. On the other hand, the lowest values were given by
the mechanical shaker method in the laboratory. Furthermore, standard deviation and skewness did
not seem to be a ected by the sieving method which means that all the grainsize distribution was
shifted but the shape remained unchanged. The few samples that do not follow these patterns have a
higher percentage of shells. Finally and definitely, the small sieves should be rejected as a sieving
method aboard

Virtual resources for the improvement of teaching in the course of Port and Coastal Engineering (dregree in Civil Engineering)
Port and Coastal Engineering is a subject included in the third year of the degree in Civil Engineering
(Civil Constructions and Hydrology specialty) taught at the Polytechnic School of Algeciras. As this is a
subject with a very specific syllabus, there is no textbook (or even appropriate references) that
contemplates all the related topics of the whole course. Moreover, there are many students who, for
different reasons (repeaters, Erasmus, labour obligations, ...), cannot attend the regular classes. This
lack of attendance has been leading to another problem: this kind of students have been leaving the
subject for several years. In addition, understanding of the basic concepts becomes even more
complicated for Erasmus students enrolled in the subject because of the language barrier. In order to
solve this problem, a project of teaching innovation has been launched which consists of the creation of
a set of evaluable tasks for the different topics addressed to be performed by the students. In this way,
the students are motivated to keep up-to-date the course contents. A comparison of the last year results
with those of the preceding five years is provided. Finally, an analysis of the significance of the
improvement is also presented
