Socioeconomic Factors and the Consumption of Wine in Tenerife
In this paper we measure the impact of an individual's socioeconomic conditions on the decision to consume wine in a traditionally wine-producing area. Management of diabetic macular edema patients in clinical practice in Spain
Purpose: Diabetic macular edema is the main cause of blindness in diabetic patients. Vascular endothelial growth factor is involved in diabetic macular edema pathogenesis. Vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors are an important option in diabetic macular edema therapy. This survey investigates actual clinical practice in diabetic macular edema in Spain.
Methods: An expert advisory panel of 17 Spanish ophthalmologists developed a 30-item anonymous questionnaire about diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up in diabetic macular edema. A total of 137 ophthalmologists from 10 Spanish regions completed the questionnaire online.
Results: Almost all of the respondents (99.3%) record the measured visual acuity and perform biomicroscopic anterior (94.9%) and posterior (91.2%) segment examinations. Similarly, 100% of responding ophthalmologists always/almost always or frequently perform optical coherence tomography. Most respondents (65%) always/almost always or frequently perform a retinography. More than 50% rarely perform fluorescein angiography. Nearly, all (96.4%) of the specialists responded that, in center-involved diabetic macular edema, the first treatment is an anti–vascular endothelial growth factor drug. For corticosteroids, the first choice of most respondents (91.2%) was the dexamethasone implant. In the follow-up, almost all (96.4%) specialists record the measured visual acuity and most also perform biomicroscopic anterior (82.5%) and posterior (83.2%) segment examination.
Conclusion: This survey shows the actual clinical practice in diabetic macular edema in Spain, finding that anti–vascular endothelial growth factor therapy is frequently used, and that diagnosis, treatments, and follow-up examinations used by specialists are homogeneous and according to diabetic macular edema guidelines
Statistical coarse-graining as an approach to multiscale problems in magnetism
Multiscale phenomena which include several processes occuring simultaneously
at different length scales and exchanging energy with each other, are
widespread in magnetism. These phenomena often govern the magnetization
reversal dynamics, and their correct modeling is important. In the present
paper, we propose an approach to multiscale modeling of magnets, applying the
ideas of coarse graining. We have analyzed the choice of the weighting function
used in coarse graining, and propose an optimal form for this function. Simple
tests provide evidence that this approach may be useful for modeling of

Validation and Search of the Ideal Cut-Off of the Sysmex UF-1000i (R) Flow Cytometer for the Diagnosis of Urinary Tract Infection in a Tertiary Hospital in Spain
Urinary tract infections (UTI) are one of the most prevalent infections. A rapid and reliable screening method is useful to screen out negative samples. The objective of this study was to validate the Sysmex flow cytometer UF-1000i by evaluating its accuracy, linearity and carry-over; and define an optimal cut-off value to be used in routine practice in our hospital. For the validation of the UF-1000i cytometer, precision, linearity and carry-over were studied in samples with different counts of bacteria, leukocytes and erythrocytes. Between March and June 2016, urine samples were tested in the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory at University Miguel Servet Hospital, in Spain. Samples were analyzed with the Sysmex UF-1000i cytometer, and cultured. Growth of >= 10(5) CFUs/mL was considered positive. The validation study reveals that the precision in all the variables is acceptable; that there is a good linearity in the dilutions performed, obtaining values almost identical to those theoretically expected; and for the carry-over has practically null values. A total of 1, 220 urine specimens were included, of which 213 (17.4%) were culture positive. The optimal cut-off point of the bacteria-leukocyte combination was 138.8 bacteria or 119.8 leukocytes with an S and E of 95.3 and 70.4%, respectively. The UF-1000i cytometer is a valuable method to screen urine samples to effectively rule out UTI and, may contribute to the reduction of unnecessary urine cultures

Effect of Build Parameters and Build Geometries on Residual Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of Ti-6Al-4V Components Built by Electron Beam Melting (EBM)
In this study, involving additive manufacturing (AM) using electron beam melting (EBM), we
have examined build defects which result from beam tripping, porosities (including unmelted or
unsintered zones) due to excursions from optimal build parameters (especially variations in melt
scan beam current and scan speed), and gas bubbles trapped in atomized Ti-6Al-4V starting
powder as well as recycled powder, and retained in the build. At optimized build conditions we
have also examined microstructure-mechanical property (hardness, tensile strength, and
elongation) variations for multiple rake building and multiple melt scans using optical
metallography and scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM). These
build variances cause cooling rate variances which promote α-phase growth and variations in
dislocation density, as well as α-to-α' (martensite) phase changes, all of which produce some
degree of mechanical property variations. These features (especially α-to-α' phase changes) are
notable on comparing solid builds in comparison with a variety of mesh arrays where strut
dimension and build-element complexities alter the cooling rates in a significant way. We
illustrate these microstructure variations with corresponding variations in microindentation
hardness measurements made directly on fine mesh (strut) structures. Finally, we have examined
Ti-6Al-4V powder chemistries and solid build chemistries which for single-pass melt scans at
optimized build conditions are shown to be relatively constant up to 40 cycles of powder reuse
with the exception of Al content which was reduced by 10 to 15% in solid builds at optimized
conditions. However, Al loss in solid builds approached 25% for multiple (2 and 3) melt scans,
while no changes in Ar gas-bubble density were observed with changes in α-phase (grain) width
which increased from 3 µm for a single melt scan to 4.5 and 6 µm for 2 and 3 melt scans,
respectively. Corresponding Rockwell C-scale (HRC) hardness varied from 37, 36, and 35,
respectively; with ultimate tensile strengths exceeding 1.2 GPa at elongations of 12% or higher
