Black Behind the Ear: Using Motion Graphics to Encourage Self-awareness and Embrace Racial Heritage.

Black Behind the Ear is an animated visual representation of Elizabeth Acevedo’s poem “Hair”. This poem uses hair as a metaphorical element to represent the internalized racism and racial amnesia predominant in the Dominican Republic, a place that owes African slaves for much of the island’s racial, and cultural heritage. This motion graphics piece intends to encourage self-awareness in a time when embracing one’s culture and race can break the ossified schemes passed through generations about personality standards based on physical attributes. Understanding where one comes from helps people see why certain ideas are worth standing for, and consequently results in many antiquated, inaccurate stereotypes derived from ignorance being banish. Hopefully Black Behind the Ear will be part of this liberating process

Secondary schools in the United States are filled with English language learners. The large amount of English Language Learners (ELLs) represent a diverse population with unique academic trajectories and language needs. The diversity among ELLs requires an examination of ELLs’ identity, as it relates to literacy development and achievement. This qualitative study explores how different types of ELLs negotiate identities in an English language arts classroom. Specifically, how different types of ELLs’ perceptions as readers and writers impact identity negotiation is analyzed. The study takes place in a sixth grade English language arts classroom in deep South Texas. It is an in depth look at how 10 focal ELLs, representing different types of ELLs, engage in a teacher-researcher designed unit of instruction. The unit focused on identity and was designed to determine what learning opportunities help foster identity negotiation. The data collected occurred over three and a half months and included written and audio-recorded interviews, participant journal entries, student produced artifacts, and a teacher researcher journal. The findings revealed that ELLs negotiate identities based on their previous schooling experiences and how language, high stakes tests, and teacher actions have critical impact in the identity negotiation process. More importantly, there are slight differences in how different types ELLs negotiate identities as learners, readers, and writers in the classroom, and it is through learning about the differences that teachers can best help ELLs

The fates of both native and added phosphorus were studied in a Leptic Hapludert, by Hedley´s fractionation method. The objectives of this study were to: a) assess the reaction of a natural grassland and a cultivated grassland in a Vertisol with added P by fertilization; b) to study the association between inorganic and organic P labile, moderately labile or non-labile forms with P availability for ryegrass growth; c) to test whether ryegrass growth may reflect the effect of a release of P from the soil with the incubation. Soil samples were taken from: a) Natural soil and, b) Cultivated soil that had been fertilized with 120 kg ha-1 yr-1 of TSP. In the laboratory, one group of samples was fertilized with P (0-200 mg P kg-1) and then incubated 25 days at 28 oC. The other group was also fertilized with P but was not incubated. After P fractionation,, ryegrass was grown in a greenhouse 45 days and the dry yield of shoots was measured. Inorganic labile P forms increased with the level of added P in both soils, and these forms were closely associated with ryegrass growth. The inorganic resistant P forms also increased with the level of added P in both soils, but more P was removed from the incubated samples suggesting that part of the added P was redistributed during the incubation. For both soils, the organic labile P decreased with the level of addition in the incubated samples but increased in the non-incubated samples. The organic more resistant P forms did not differ between the natural and cultivated soil and did not show a consistent distribution with added P or incubation. This suggests that these P forms had little influence on P availability in short or medium periods of reaction between soil and P.Fil: Fernandez Lopez, Carolina. Fibroblasts at the curtain call: from ensemble to principal dancers in immunometabolism and inflammaging

Inflammation is a necessary step in response to injuries, being vital in restoring homeostasis and facilitating tissue healing. Among the cells that play a crucial role in inflammatory responses, stromal cells, including fibroblasts, have an undeniable significance in fine-tuning the magnitude of mediators that directly affect hyper-inflammatory responses and tissue destruction. Fibroblasts, the dominant cells in the gingival connective tissue, are a very heterogeneous population of cells, and more recently they have been receiving well deserved attention as central players and often the ‘principal dancers’ of many pathological processes ranging from inflammation and fibrosis to altered immunity and cancer. The goal of the current investigation is to dive into the exact role of the stromal fibroblast and the responsible mechanistic factors involved in both regulation and dysregulation of the inflammatory responses. This article reviews the most recent literature on how fibroblasts, in their different activation states or subtypes, play a crucial role in contributing to inflammatory outcomes. We will focus on recent findings on inflammatory diseases. We will also provide connections regarding the stromal-immune relationship, which supports the idea of fibroblast coming out from the ‘ensemble’ of cell types to the protagonist role in immunometabolism and inflammaging. Additionally, we discuss the current advances in variation of fibroblast nomenclature and division into clusters with their own suggested function and particularities in gene expression. Here, we provide a perspective for the periodontal implications, discussing the fibroblast role in the infection-driven and inflammatory mediated diseases such as periodontitis

Stopping sports training in an abrupt manner and without the due process can generate problems such as weight gain, predisposition to sport injuries, cardiovascular difficulties, and psychological disorders which may include depression, anxiety, psychoactive substance use, unresolved grief and emotional crises as a result of the loss of sport identity. The purpose of the research is to establish how the retirement transition process from sports for athletes who have participated in Olympic and Paralympic games, taking into account their mental health, is made. For which, a mixed research was conducted with 18 former athletes from Antioquia in the modalities of artistic gymnastics (2), Olympic wrestling (3), athletics (1), boxing (4), cycling (4), swimming (2), judo (1), and Paralympic marathon (1) to whom an interview and the GHQ28 questionnaire was applied. The results showed that although the mental health of the athletes is currently preserved, at the time of retirement there were multiple symptoms associated with mental disorders such as anxiety and depression; it was also identified that there are no systematic detraining processes that favor physical and mental health in the process of sports retirement.

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>It has been hypothesised that people with anorexia nervosa have a higher intelligence quotient (IQ) level than the general population. The purpose of this review was to systematically appraise the research into reported IQ levels in people with anorexia nervosa.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A search using the terms intelligence quotient, IQ, intelligence, cognition, eating disorders and anorexia was conducted in electronic databases only.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In all, 30 peer-reviewed studies written in English that used well established measures of intelligence quotient (the National Adult Reading Test and Wechsler Intelligence Scales) were identified. This review established that people with anorexia nervosa score 10.8 units and 5.9 units above the average intelligence quotient of the normative population on the National Adult Reading Test and Wechsler Intelligence Scales, respectively. An association was found between Body Mass Index and intelligence quotient, as measured by the National Adult Reading Test.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>More studies including other eating disorder categories and recovered people are needed to explore important questions regarding the role of the intelligence quotient in treatment response.</p
