The Uses of Herbaria in Botanical Research: A Review Based on Evidence From Argentina

    Get PDF
Botanists, a section of the broad universe of researchers in Biology, are intensive users of herbaria. Presumably, all botanists use herbaria, with greater or lesser frequency and intensity, in the development of their research. In this article, we will try to prove this statement. For this purpose, an institutional history of Botany and herbaria in Argentina is presented. This study will also show that there are other fields of knowledge in which the herbarium has a role as an input, or data source, for research (e.g. agronomy, ethnobotany, medicine). On the other hand, it will be demonstrated that, in addition to the uses of the herbarium in basic science, this institution has a crucial role in the knowledge and preservation of biodiversity, and in the improvement of species for commercial use.Fil: Lopez, Alicia. The Mean Platelet Volume (MPV) is a biomarker that indicates the geometric measurement of platelet size, function, and activity. Several studies have revealed its usefulness as a marker of cardiovascular risk and, in particular, as an indicator of clinical severity and a prognostic factor for mortality in patients with pulmonary embolism (TEP). In this work, we have carried out an analysis of MPV in patients admitted to a hospital with a diagnosis of pulmonary embolism. We designed a descriptive, observational, retrospective and longitudinal study. The study includes 72 cases described from 2013 to 2019, both in patients admitted to the ICU and in the hospital’s conventional hospitalization ward. The results show that the surviving patients 30 days after their hospital admission with the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism presented a lower MPV (9.2 fl vs 10 fl) with a confidence level of 93 % (p: 0.07). However, they presented similar values of D Dimer, pH, PaCO2 and Lactate. We did not find statistically significant differences when comparing the clinical and analytical variables between men and women, except for a higher Platelet Count in women. The patients who were admitted to the ICU presented a lower age, a lower Platelet Count and a lower PaCO2 than those who were admitted to the hospitalization room with the same diagnosis. The conclusion of the study is that patients who die within thirty days after hospitalization due to pulmonary embolism have higher levels of MPV.Medicin

Dietary micronutrients intake and plasma fibrinogen levels in the general adult population.

Plasma fibrinogen predicts cardiovascular and nonvascular mortality. However, there is limited population-based evidence on the association between fibrinogen levels and dietary intakes of micronutrients possibly associated with inflammation status. Data were taken from the ENRICA study, conducted with 10,808 individuals representative of the population of Spain aged ≥ 18 years. Nutrient intake (vitamin A, carotenoids, vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, magnesium, selenium, zinc and iron) was estimated with a validated diet history, and plasma fibrinogen was measured under appropriate quality checks. Statistical analyses were performed with linear regression and adjusted for main confounders. The geometric means of fibrinogen (g/L) across increasing quintiles of nutrient intake were 3.22, 3.22, 3.22, 3.16, and 3.19 (p-trend = 0.030) for vitamin E; 3.23, 3.22, 3.20, 3.19, and 3.19 (p-trend = 0.047) for magnesium; and 3.24, 3.22, 3.19, 3.21, and 3.19 (p-trend = 0.050) for iron. These inverse associations were more marked in participants with abdominal obesity and aged ≥ 60 years, but lost statistical significance after adjustment for other nutrients. Although dietary intakes of vitamin E, magnesium and iron were inversely associated with fibrinogen levels, clinical implications of these findings are uncertain since these results were of very small magnitude and mostly explained by intake levels of other nutrients. This work has been funded by State Secretary of R + D + I and FEDER/FSE FIS grants (F.R.A., grant 16/609 and 19/319; E.L.G., grant 16/1512); and the JPI HDHL-SALAMANDER project (F.R.A., grant APCIN 2016-145). Rättfärdigandet av civilt olydiga handlingar : en studie av Antifascistisk Aktions och Revolutionära Frontens arbete i Sverige

By studying various theories about civil disobedience, five requirements have been developed for civil disobedience to be considered legitimate. The purpose with this paper is to see if the two networks Anti-Fascist Action (AFA) and the Revolutionary Front (RF) lives up to these criteria and therefore are legitimate in their actions. The study is done with ideology analysis of AFA:s and RF:s own websites and material, to better understand their ideology and point of view. Choosing AFA and RF was based on the fact that they are among the largest autonomous networks in Sweden and they fight against racism, fascism and other forms of oppression. The networks manage to live up to the majority of the criteria being presented in the study, which would mean that the theories used in this paper would justify the networks’ civil disobedience. The study also concluded that there are two subjects that also could be considered as two additional criteria, but because of the scholars disagreement in these areas they are in this paper seen as only possible criteria. These two criteria include the idea of violence and the thought that civil disobedience only can be justified in a fundamentally unfair and undemocratic state. This raises interesting questions and thoughts about civil disobedience in the West and provides an insight into how some might think that civil disobedience actions are important and even necessary to improve a society - even a democratic one
