Synthesis of atomically thin hexagonal boron nitride films on nickel foils by molecular beam epitaxy
Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is a layered two-dimensional material with
properties that make it promising as a dielectric in various applications. We
report the growth of h-BN films on Ni foils from elemental B and N using
molecular beam epitaxy. The presence of crystalline h-BN over the entire
substrate is confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. Atomic force microscopy is used
to examine the morphology and continuity of the synthesized films. A scanning
electron microscopy study of films obtained using shorter depositions offers
insight into the nucleation and growth behavior of h-BN on the Ni substrate.
The morphology of h-BN was found to evolve from dendritic, star-shaped islands
to larger, smooth triangular ones with increasing growth temperature
Vanishing Viscosity Limits and Boundary Layers for Circularly Symmetric 2D Flows
We continue the work of Lopes Filho, Mazzucato and Nussenzveig Lopes [LMN],
on the vanishing viscosity limit of circularly symmetric viscous flow in a disk
with rotating boundary, shown there to converge to the inviscid limit in
-norm as long as the prescribed angular velocity of the
boundary has bounded total variation. Here we establish convergence in stronger
and -Sobolev spaces, allow for more singular angular velocities
, and address the issue of analyzing the behavior of the boundary
layer. This includes an analysis of concentration of vorticity in the vanishing
viscosity limit. We also consider such flows on an annulus, whose two boundary
components rotate independently.

Phenomenological study of the electronic transport coefficients of graphene
Using a semi-classical approach and input from experiments on the
conductivity of graphene, we determine the electronic density dependence of the
electronic transport coefficients -- conductivity, thermal conductivity and
thermopower -- of doped graphene. Also the electronic density dependence of the
optical conductivity is obtained. Finally we show that the classical Hall
effect (low field) in graphene has the same form as for the independent
electron case, characterized by a parabolic dispersion, as long as the
relaxation time is proportional to the momentum.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
Explaining growth in African countries – what matters?
In this work we analyze the role of the traditional determinants of economic growth, pointed by the literature, in African countries in the period between 1950 and 2012, using growth regressions. Due to the specificity and the single nature of each one of these countries, methods that take into account observed and unobserved heterogeneity are used. Results highlight the relevance of the growth rate of the capital stock to economic growth in African countries in the short-run, which is significant in all regressions. The growth rate of the government to GDP ratio is also important in all but one of the regressions in which appears, and its growth is harmful for the growth of GDP per capita in the short-run. On the other hand, variables related to the public debt do not present any relationship with economic growth. Human capital has a positive relationship with economic growth in regressions that do not include public debt. The growth rate of real GDP per capita also depends (negatively) on its past value, i.e., the lower the real GDP per capita the higher will be its growth rate.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
Fractal analysis of weld defect patterns obtained by radiographic tests
This paper presents a fractal analysis of radiographic patterns obtained from
specimens with three types of inserted welding defects: lack of fusion, lack of
penetration, and porosity. The study focused on patterns of carbon steel beads
from radiographs of the International Institute of Welding (IIW). The
radiographs were scanned using a greyscale with 256 levels, and the fractal
features of the surfaces constructed from the radiographic images were
characterized by means of Hurst, detrended-fluctuation, and minimal-cover
analyses. A Karhunen-Loeve transformation was then used to classify the curves
obtained from the fractal analyses of the various images, and a study of the
classification errors was performed. The obtained results indicate that fractal
analyses can be an effective additional tool for pattern recognition of weld
defects in radiographic tests.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures. To appear AIP Conference Proceedings - QNDE 200
Quality of Referrals Information from Primary Health Care to a Psychiatric Consultation
A qua-
o utente referenciado.
Objetivos: Avaliar a qualidade da informação
contida nas cartas de referenciação das uni-
dades de saúde do Agrupamento de Centros
de Saúde (ACES) do Alentejo Central para a
consulta de psiquiatria do Hospital do Espíri-
to Santo de Évora (HESE); determinar a fre-
quência dos grandes grupos de perturbações
psiquiátricas apontados como hipóteses diag-
nósticas na referenciação.
Métodos: Estudo observacional descritivo
transversal.
Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth
Edition (DSM5), apontadas como hipóteses
diagnósticas na referenciação.
Resultados: Das 245 cartas de referenciação
analisadas, 220 foram incluídas no estudo.
Apenas 2,27% das referenciações tinham os
onze campos definidos na plataforma Alert
P1 ® (Alert Life Sciences Computing) devida-
mente preenchidos. Em 35% das referencia-
ções não foi identificado qualquer critério que
justificasse o encaminhamento. A falência
Os quadros depressivos e an-
psiquiatria.
Conclusões: Os resultados evidenciaram a
importância de sensibilizar os Médicos de Fa-
mília para um correto e completo preenchi-
mento do guia de referenciação da plataforma
Alert P1 ® .
Generic dynamics of 4-dimensional C2 Hamiltonian systems
We study the dynamical behaviour of Hamiltonian flows defined on
4-dimensional compact symplectic manifolds. We find the existence of a
C2-residual set of Hamiltonians for which every regular energy surface is
either Anosov or it is in the closure of energy surfaces with zero Lyapunov
exponents a.e. This is in the spirit of the Bochi-Mane dichotomy for
area-preserving diffeomorphisms on compact surfaces and its continuous-time
version for 3-dimensional volume-preserving flows
