    Regional Collective Action Wraps Up

    After four years, the Regional Collective Action Programme has come to an end. In this final issue of Collective Action News, we report on how Regional Collective Action activities have supported the work of the Consortium and the CRPs. The Regional Collective Action Programme has been described by Carlos SerĂ©, Director General of the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), which has hosted the Programme since its inception in 2007, as ‘a bold experiment that achieved considerable success in promoting collaborative action in eastern and southern Africa that has now been overtaken by the process of CGIAR reform’. Many of the activities started under the Programme have now been incorporated into the CGIAR Consortium and the CGIAR Research Programmes (CRPs)

    Building on previous multicountry surveillance studies of typhoid and others salmonelloses such as the Diseases of the Most Impoverished program and the Typhoid Surveillance in Africa Project, several ongoing blood culture surveillance studies are generating important data about incidence, severity, transmission, and clinical features of invasive Salmonella infections in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. These studies are also characterizing drug resistance patterns in their respective study sites. Each study answers a different set of research questions and employs slightly different methodologies, and the geographies under surveillance differ in size, population density, physician practices, access to healthcare facilities, and access to microbiologically safe water and improved sanitation. These differences in part reflect the heterogeneity of the epidemiology of invasive salmonellosis globally, and thus enable generation of data that are useful to policymakers in decision-making for the introduction of typhoid conjugate vaccines (TCVs). Moreover, each study is evaluating the large-scale deployment of TCVs, and may ultimately be used to assess post-introduction vaccine impact. The data generated by these studies will also be used to refine global disease burden estimates. It is important to ensure that lessons learned from these studies not only inform vaccination policy, but also are incorporated into sustainable, low-cost, integrated vaccine-preventable disease surveillance systems

    Deep underground muon events recorded by the Soudan 2 detector, located at a depth of 2100 meters of water equivalent, have been used to infer the nuclear composition of cosmic rays in the "knee" region of the cosmic ray energy spectrum.     Classroom Ventilation: The Effectiveness of Preheating and Refresh Breaks: An analysis of 169 spaces at 43 schools across New Zealand

    The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of ventilation as a transmission mitigation strategy. However, there was a widely held concern that a drop in outdoor temperatures during winter may impact thermal comfort in the context of naturally ventilated classrooms. This concern has not been widely investigated by peer-reviewed empirical studies (Sutherland et al., 2022b). The aim of the Ministry’s ventilation monitoring initiative was to assess ventilation performance and thermal comfort by continuously measuring indoor CO2 levels, air temperature, and relative humidity in classrooms during winter, without obstructing teaching activities. A total of 43 schools, which represent a broad mix of property attributes and located across the 6 Climate Zones in New Zealand, were selected for the monitoring initiative. The CO2 monitors were deployed in about 4-6 pre-selected and representative spaces in each school. Data was retrieved from 213 spaces; of these, 44 spaces were excluded, because the initiative concentrated on teaching environments (classrooms) and those spaces were categorised as non-teaching environments (e.g., staff rooms, meeting rooms, etc.). From the 213 spaces, the data from 169 teaching spaces retrieved for the period 23 May to 26 August 2022 were analysed to ascertain the impacts of inferred human behaviours considered to be able to improve natural ventilation and detected from features of CO2 and temperature data. This analysis does not (and did not intend to) corroborate independent observation of behaviours

    An Exploratory Quantitative Study into the Relationship between Catholic Affiliation and the Development of Social Entrepreneurship Education in the USA

    Catholic educationalists have long stressed the role of Catholic universities in advancing the cause of social justice to counter the increasing commodification of business relationships and the lack of social responsibilities of the business world. Is this rhetoric or reality? In this empirical paper involving 501 USA universities that have an Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) accredited business school, we examine the relationship between Catholic affiliation and the universities’ decisions to offer social entrepreneurship and non-profit management courses to business students. Our study found that universities with Catholic affiliation are significantly more likely to offer both non-profit management and social entrepreneurship courses to business students. Our results offer evidences that Catholic universities are indeed working towards making a difference, with the vision and flexibility to do so

    A combined analysis technique for the search for fast magnetic monopoles with the MACRO detector

    We describe a search method for fast moving (ÎČ>5×10−3\beta > 5 \times 10^{-3}) magnetic monopoles using simultaneously the scintillator, streamer tube and track-etch subdetectors of the MACRO apparatus. The first two subdetectors are used primarily for the identification of candidates while the track-etch one is used as the final tool for their rejection or confirmation. Using this technique, a first sample of more than two years of data has been analyzed without any evidence of a magnetic monopole. We set a 90% CL upper limit to the local monopole flux of 1.5×10−15cm−2s−1sr−11.5 \times 10^{-15} cm^{-2} s^{-1} sr^{-1} in the velocity range 5×10−3≀ÎČ≀0.995 \times 10^{-3} \le \beta \le 0.99 and for nucleon decay catalysis cross section smaller than ∌1mb\sim 1 mb.Comment: 29 pages (12 figures).     Final results of magnetic monopole searches with the MACRO experiment

    We present the final results obtained by the MACRO experiment in the search for GUT magnetic monopoles in the penetrating cosmic radiation, for the range 4×10−5<ÎČ<14\times 10^{-5}< \beta < 1. Several searches with all the MACRO sub-detectors (i.e. scintillation counters, limited streamer tubes and nuclear track detectors) were performed, both in stand alone and combined ways. No candidates were detected and a 90% Confidence Level (C.L.) upper limit to the local magnetic monopole flux was set at the level of 1.4×10−161.4\times 10^{-16} cm−2^{-2} s−1^{-1} sr−1^{-1}. This result is the first experimental limit obtained in direct searches which is well below the Parker bound in the whole ÎČ\beta range in which GUT magnetic monopoles are expected.Comment: 12 pages, Latex, 9 figures and 2 Table
