    Strategies for Integrating Wellness into Practicum Supervision

    The high-stress work of the counseling profession has been linked to burnout and counselor impairment. This poses major ethical concerns for counseling practice. It has been suggested in the counseling literature that well-counselors are more helpful to their clients compared to those experiencing impairment and distress. Effective counselors are individuals continuously working toward enhancing their personal and professional wellness. Promoting student health and wellness begins with integrating this belief within counselor training programs. Wellness strategies may provide supervisors with tools to increase student wellness, prevent burnout, and assist in protecting clients from impaired counselors. This is essential because beginning counselors in training may not have knowledge about the importance of wellness as it relates to professional practice. This manuscript identifies the need to infuse wellness initiatives into the supervision experiences of master’s level counselors in training (CITs). Wellness models and concepts are discussed, a model for integrating wellness into CITs’ practicum supervisory experiences is proposed, and implications and future research directions are shared

    Ultrasonic detection and identification of fabrication defects in composites

    Methods for deliberate fabrication of porosity into carbon/epoxy composite panels and the influence of three-dimensional stitching on the detection of porosity were investigated. Two methods of introducing porosity were investigated. Porosity was simulated by inclusion of glass microspheres, and a more realistic form of porosity was introduced by using low pressure during consolidation. The panels were ultrasonically scanned and the frequency slope of the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient was used to evaluate the two forms of porosity. The influence of stitching on the detection of porosity was studied using panels which were resin transfer molded from stitched plies of knitted carbon fabric and epoxy resin

    A Magnetic and Moessbauer Spectral Study of Core/Shell Structured Fe/Au Nanoparticles

    Fe/Au nanoparticles have been chemically synthesized through a reverse micelle reaction and investigated by both conventional and synchrotron based x-ray diffraction and by magnetic and Moessbauer spectral studies. The powder x-ray diffraction patterns reveal both the presence of crystalline alpha-iron and gold and the absence of any crystalline iron oxides or other crystalline products. First-order reversal curves, along with the major hysteresis loops of the Fe/Au nanoparticles have been measured as a function of time in order to investigate the evolution of their magnetic properties. The iron-57 Moessbauer spectra of both uncoated iron nanoparticles and the Fe/Au nanoparticles have been measured at 78 and 295 K and indicate that two major iron containing components are present, namely the expected alpha-iron and the unexpected amorphous Fe1-xBx alloy; several poorly crystallized ordered iron(III) oxide components as well as paramagnetic iron(II) and iron(III) components are also observed. These results indicate that the Fe-core/Au-shell nanoparticles synthesized through reverse micelles are far more complex that had been believed.Comment: 31 pages, 1 table, 8 figures, to appear in Chemistry of Material

    Pemetrexed in combination with cisplatin versus cisplatin monotherapy in E ast A sian patients with recurrent or metastatic head and neck cancer: Results of an exploratory subgroup analysis of a phase III trial

    Aim: An exploratory subgroup analysis of E ast A sian ( EA ) patients in a phase III trial was conducted to assess efficacy and safety trends based on ethnicity. Methods: The 795 patients with recurrent or metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck included 111 EA patients randomized to pemetrexed‐cisplatin ( n  = 55) and placebo‐cisplatin ( n  = 56) and 684 non‐ EA patients randomized to pemetrexed‐cisplatin ( n  = 343) and placebo‐cisplatin ( n  = 341). Treatment differences in median overall survival and progression‐free survival were compared using a stratified log–rank test. Survival was estimated using the K aplan– M eier method. Results: The median overall survival in the pemetrexed‐cisplatin and placebo‐cisplatin arms of the EA group (6.8 and 5.7 months, respectively [ P  = 0.275]) was similar to that in the global population (7.3 and 6.3 months, respectively [ P  = 0.082]); the median progression‐free survival in the pemetrexed‐cisplatin and placebo‐cisplatin arms in the EA group (2.8 and 1.9 months, respectively [ P  = 0.748]) was similar to that in the global population (3.6 and 2.8 months, respectively [ P  = 0.166]). Compared to the findings in the global population, overall survival for the EA group receiving prior platinum‐based therapy was longer ( P  = 0.042 vs P  = 0.065). There was no significant interaction between treatment arms and ethnicity. Conclusion: Consistent with findings in the global population, pemetrexed‐cisplatin did not improve survival compared with placebo‐cisplatin for the EA group .     Afadin orients cell division to position the tubule lumen in developing renal tubules

    In many types of tubules, continuity of the lumen is paramount to tubular function, yet how tubules generate lumen continuity in vivo is not known. We recently found the F-actin binding protein Afadin is required for lumen continuity in developing renal tubules, though its mechanism of action remains unknown. Here we demonstrate Afadin is required for lumen continuity by orienting the mitotic spindle during cell division. Using an in vitro 3D cyst model, we find Afadin localizes to the cell cortex adjacent to the spindle poles and orients the mitotic spindle. In tubules, cell division may be oriented relative to two axes, longitudinal and apical-basal. Unexpectedly, in vivo examination of early stage developing nephron tubules reveals cell division is not oriented in the longitudinal (or planar polarized) axis. However, cell division is oriented perpendicular to the apical-basal axis. Absence of Afadin in vivo leads to misorientation of apical-basal cell division in nephron tubules. Together these results support a model whereby Afadin determines lumen placement by directing apical-basal spindle orientation, which generates a continuous lumen and normal tubule morphogenesis

    The Effect Of Education On Oral Health Students’ Attitudes In Australia And New Zealand

    Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the oral health attitudes and behavior of students in the oral health curriculum in Australia and New Zealand. Materials and Methods: The Hiroshima University ‑ Dental Behavioral Inventory was administered to students in the first (year 1) and final years (year 3) of the oral health curriculum at Charles Sturt University in Australia and the University of Otago in New Zealand. A total of fifty‑two year 1 students and forty‑five year 3 students completed English version of the questionnaire in 2013. The responses were statistically analyzed by Fisher’s exact tests and exact logistic regression models. Results: The responses of students in years 1 and 3 differed significantly for “I worry about the color of my teeth” at Charles Sturt University and at the University Otago, for “I think my teeth are getting worse despite my daily brushing,” “I put off going to the dentist until I have a toothache,” and “I don’t feel I’ve brushed well unless I brush with strong strokes.” The estimated odds ratios from the exact logistic regression models showed that year 1 students were more likely to agree with above‑mentioned four questions. Conclusions: Oral Health students who had been educated in a 3‑year oral health curriculum in Australia and New Zealand had more positive attitudes and behaviors related oral health than did students at the beginning of their curriculum

    Response of the mantle to flat slab evolution: Insights from local splitting beneath Peru

    The dynamics of flat subduction, particularly the interaction between a flat slab and the overriding plate, are poorly understood. Here we study the (seismically) anisotropic properties and deformational regime of the mantle directly above the Peruvian flat slab. We analyze shear wave splitting from 370 local S events at 49 stations across southern Peru. We find that the mantle above the flat slab appears to be anisotropic, with modest average delay times (~0.28?s) that are consistent with ~4% anisotropy in a ~30?km thick mantle layer. The most likely mechanism is the lattice-preferred orientation of olivine, which suggests that the observed splitting pattern preserves information about the mantle deformation. We observe a pronounced change in anisotropy along strike, with predominately trench-parallel fast directions in the north and more variable orientations in the south, which we attribute to the ongoing migration of the Nazca Ridge through the flat slab system

    Evaluation of bile salt hydrolase inhibitor efficacy for modulating host bile profile and physiology using a chicken model system

    Gut microbial enzymes, bile salt hydrolases (BSHs) are the gateway enzymes for bile acid (BA) modification in the gut. This activity is a promising target for developing innovative non-antibiotic growth promoters to enhance animal production and health. Compelling evidence has shown that inhibition of BSH activity should enhance weight gain by altering the BA pool, host signalling and lipid metabolism. We recently identified a panel of promising BSH inhibitors. Here, we address the potential of them as alternative, effective, non-antibiotic feed additives, for commercial application, to promote animal growth using a chicken model. In this study, the in vivo efficacy of three BSH inhibitors (caffeic acid phenethylester, riboflavin, carnosic acid) were evaluated. 7-day old chicks (10 birds/group) were either untreated or they received one of the specific BSH inhibitors (25 mg/kg body weight) via oral gavage for 17 days. The chicks in treatment groups consistently displayed higher body weight gain than the untreated chicks. Metabolomic analysis demonstrated that BSH inhibitor treatment led to significant changes in both circulating and intestinal BA signatures in support of blunted intestinal BSH activity. Consistent with this finding, liver and intestinal tissue RNA-Seq analysis showed that carnosic acid treatment significantly altered expression of genes involved in lipid and bile acid metabolism. Taken together, this study validates microbial BSH activity inhibition as an alternative target and strategy to antibiotic treatment for animal growth promotion
