A \u27slow pace of life\u27 in Australian old-endemic passerine birds is not accompanied by low basal metabolic rates

Life history theory suggests that species experiencing high extrinsic mortality rates allocate more resources toward reproduction relative to self-maintenance and reach maturity earlier (\u27fast pace of life\u27) than those having greater life expectancy and reproducing at a lower rate (\u27slow pace of life\u27). Among birds, many studies have shown that tropical species have a slower pace of life than temperate-breeding species. The pace of life has been hypothesized to affect metabolism and, as predicted, tropical birds have lower basal metabolic rates (BMR) than temperate-breeding birds. However, many temperate-breeding Australian passerines belong to lineages that evolved in Australia and share \u27slow\u27 life-history traits that are typical of tropical birds. We obtained BMR from 30 of these \u27old-endemics\u27 and ten sympatric species of more recently arrived passerine lineages (derived from Afro-Asian origins or introduced by Europeans) with \u27faster\u27 life histories. The BMR of \u27slow\u27 temperate-breeding old-endemics was indistinguishable from that of new-arrivals and was not lower than the BMR of \u27fast\u27 temperate-breeding non-Australian passerines. Old-endemics had substantially smaller clutches and longer maximal life spans in the wild than new arrivals, but neither clutch size nor maximum life span was correlated with BMR. Our results suggest that low BMR in tropical birds is not functionally linked to their \u27slow pace of life\u27 and instead may be a consequence of differences in annual thermal conditions experienced by tropical versus temperate species

Enfermedad carcinoide cardiaca multivalvular

ResumenHombre de 67 años de edad, enviado a valoración ecocardiográfica por cuadro clínico de 6meses de evolución con: disnea de esfuerzo, edemas de miembros inferiores y fatiga. Se encuentra doble lesión de la válvula tricúspide con: estenosis e insuficiencia severa, insuficiencia pulmonar severa; y compromiso valvular izquierdo con: insuficiencia mitral y aórtica severas, asociadas a engrosamiento y rigidez valvular. El paciente tenía como antecedente tumor neuroendocrino de íleon, metastásico a pulmón e hígado.En este caso se discuten los hallazgos ecocardiográficos característicos del síndrome carcinoide con compromiso multivalvular como hallazgo inusual de este raro síndrome.AbstractA 67 year-old man is sent to echocardiographic assessment for 6 month history of exertional: dyspnea, edema of the lower extremities, fatigue, double lesions in tricuspid valve with: severe stenosis and severe regurgitation, severe pulmonary valve regurgitation; and left side valvular disease with: severe aortic regurgitation and severe mitral regurgitation, all of them associated with valvular thickening, rigidity, in a patient with history of neuroendocrine tumor, with lung and liver metastases.This case discuss the echocardiographic findings suggestive of carcinoid multivalvular and left side valvular disease as unusual finding in this rare syndrome

Evaluation of methylparaben removal and microbial behavior using a SBR system

We evaluated the variation in microbial populations and the behavior of an SBR system in the removal of methylparaben (MePB). The experimentation was carried out for 14 weeks, in three operational stages as follows: stabilization (Stage I), (Stage II = 300 μgMePB/L and Stage III = 600 μgMePB/L). The variation of the microorganisms was analyzed over the experimentation time along with the contact with the pollutant to be degraded, and the removal percentage of COD and MePB, with results of 88±5,5% and 92±7,7% respectively. Kinetic of MePB removal was evaluated to obtain the rate constant of biological degradation, Kbiol. Using these kinetic results, the effect of different concentrations of MePB and biomass on biodegradation behavior was evaluated. Kbiol (LgSS-1d-1) values were obtained of 42.8 and 79 respectively; and 472±38.0 µgMePB/L, at biomass contents of 1466.7 and 2666.7 mgSSV/L, where Kbiol (LgSS-1d-1) values were obtained of 11.0 and 32.6 respectively. The variation of the microbial populations were analyzed using DGGE. The results obtained indicated that the populations presented similar characteristics between the stages. However, for the biomass samples of Stage I and stage III, significant differences were identified in the composition of microbial populations. Nonetheless, this did not affect the removal of MePB and the diversity conditions that characterize an aerobic system

Tendencias de la investigación en Ingeniería Ambiental

Esta obra incluye las memorias del Simposio “Tendencias de la Investigación en Ingeniería Ambiental”, organizado por el Grupo de Investigaciones y Mediciones Ambientales (GEMA), realizado en la Universidad de Medellín en agosto de 2007. El texto está conformado por 14 capítulos agrupados en cuatro partes. Impact of COVID-19 on cardiovascular testing in the United States versus the rest of the world

Objectives: This study sought to quantify and compare the decline in volumes of cardiovascular procedures between the United States and non-US institutions during the early phase of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the care of many non-COVID-19 illnesses. Reductions in diagnostic cardiovascular testing around the world have led to concerns over the implications of reduced testing for cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality. Methods: Data were submitted to the INCAPS-COVID (International Atomic Energy Agency Non-Invasive Cardiology Protocols Study of COVID-19), a multinational registry comprising 909 institutions in 108 countries (including 155 facilities in 40 U.S. states), assessing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on volumes of diagnostic cardiovascular procedures. Data were obtained for April 2020 and compared with volumes of baseline procedures from March 2019. We compared laboratory characteristics, practices, and procedure volumes between U.S. and non-U.S. facilities and between U.S. geographic regions and identified factors associated with volume reduction in the United States. Results: Reductions in the volumes of procedures in the United States were similar to those in non-U.S. facilities (68% vs. 63%, respectively; p = 0.237), although U.S. facilities reported greater reductions in invasive coronary angiography (69% vs. 53%, respectively; p < 0.001). Significantly more U.S. facilities reported increased use of telehealth and patient screening measures than non-U.S. facilities, such as temperature checks, symptom screenings, and COVID-19 testing. Reductions in volumes of procedures differed between U.S. regions, with larger declines observed in the Northeast (76%) and Midwest (74%) than in the South (62%) and West (44%). Prevalence of COVID-19, staff redeployments, outpatient centers, and urban centers were associated with greater reductions in volume in U.S. facilities in a multivariable analysis. Conclusions: We observed marked reductions in U.S. cardiovascular testing in the early phase of the pandemic and significant variability between U.S. regions. The association between reductions of volumes and COVID-19 prevalence in the United States highlighted the need for proactive efforts to maintain access to cardiovascular testing in areas most affected by outbreaks of COVID-19 infection

Este volumen acoge la memoria académica de la Cuarta edición del Congreso Internacional de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación para la Sociedad, CITIS 2017, desarrollado entre el 29 de noviembre y el 1 de diciembre de 2017 y organizado por la Universidad Politécnica Salesiana (UPS) en su sede de Guayaquil. El Congreso ofreció un espacio para la presentación, difusión e intercambio de importantes investigaciones nacionales e internacionales ante la comunidad universitaria que se dio cita en el encuentro. El uso de herramientas tecnológicas para la gestión de los trabajos de investigación como la plataforma Open Conference Systems y la web de presentación del Congreso http://citis.blog.ups.edu.ec/, hicieron de CITIS 2017 un verdadero referente entre los congresos que se desarrollaron en el país. La preocupación de nuestra Universidad, de presentar espacios que ayuden a generar nuevos y mejores cambios en la dimensión humana y social de nuestro entorno, hace que se persiga en cada edición del evento la presentación de trabajos con calidad creciente en cuanto a su producción científica. Cuatro teoremas sobre la música tonal

From the exercise of teaching ´Music Theory´ courses about the Tonal Music or common practice period and the handling of Harmony, Counterpoint, Form and Analysis textbooks, the tonal repertoire performance and the attentive, curious and critic communication with colleagues and students, several questions arose to which our group of Research dedicated the last four years. In this booklet we want to inform the main conclusions after a long reading, discussion and theorization process of investigation on four subjects that, even if recurring along the History of Music Theory, each in it’s own way, can offer nowadays new perspectives: Natural or physical bases of Tonalism, Music Micro Morphology and Figuration, Chromatic unitonal chords and Problems in the Musical specialized Lexicon.Desde el ejercicio de la docencia de las materias llamadas “teóricas” de la Música, y especialmente de la académica tradicional occidental o tonalismo, y el trasegar por los textos o tratados, el repertorio musical mismo y la comunicación atenta, curiosa y crítica con colegas y estudiantes, han ido surgiendo preguntas de investigación a las que nuestra línea específica del grupo de Estudios Musicales ha dedicado sus indagaciones de los últimos cuatro años. Problemas en el léxico musical especializado: equívocos, multívocos y contradicciones

It’s axiomatic that the main communication tools among the members of an academic community are, namely, the general written and spoken language used in a rigorous manner, it’s semantic specific scientific portion and it’s own symbolic system, when applicable, in such a way that the concepts or objects managed by the respective discipline be corresponded biunivocally by definite words and signs. Since the universally reached knowledge of a given discipline is kept and developed by that academic community through continuous research and linguistic communication, a non rigorous lexicon stands against a real authentic progress of that specific academic field. This text tries to draw attention on certain words assigned to some musicological concepts, especially in the area of the so called “Music Theory”, a problematic expression, by the way, referred to the study of the elements and structures or Grammar of the Music.Es axiomático que las principales herramientas de comunicación académica entre los miembros de una comunidad científica son: el lenguaje riguroso o ensayístico, incluido en él un léxico especializado que dé cuenta de los conceptos que la disciplina respectiva maneja, en forma tal que haya una relación biunívoca entre vocablos significantes y objetos – conceptos significados y, si fuera aplicable, el sistema simbólico pertinente o notación propia.
