Photon-assisted shot noise in graphene in the Terahertz range
When subjected to electromagnetic radiation, the fluctuation of the
electronic current across a quantum conductor increases. This additional noise,
called photon-assisted shot noise, arises from the generation and subsequent
partition of electron-hole pairs in the conductor. The physics of
photon-assisted shot noise has been thoroughly investigated at microwave
frequencies up to 20 GHz, and its robustness suggests that it could be extended
to the Terahertz (THz) range. Here, we present measurements of the quantum shot
noise generated in a graphene nanoribbon subjected to a THz radiation. Our
results show signatures of photon-assisted shot noise, further demonstrating
that hallmark time-dependant quantum transport phenomena can be transposed to

The porin and the permeating antibiotic: A selective diffusion barrier in gram-negative bacteria
Gram-negative bacteria are responsible for a large proportion of antibiotic resistant bacterial diseases. These bacteria have a complex cell envelope that comprises an outer membrane and an inner membrane that delimit the periplasm. The outer membrane contains various protein channels, called porins, which are involved in the influx of various compounds, including several classes of antibiotics. Bacterial adaptation to reduce influx through porins is an increasing problem worldwide that contributes, together with efflux systems, to the emergence and dissemination of antibiotic resistance. An exciting challenge is to decipher the genetic and molecular basis of membrane impermeability as a bacterial resistance mechanism. This Review outlines the bacterial response towards antibiotic stress on altered membrane permeability and discusses recent advances in molecular approaches that are improving our knowledge of the physico-chemical parameters that govern the translocation of antibiotics through porin channel
Spline Upwind for space--time Isogeometric Analysis of cardiac electrophysiology
We present an elaboration and application of Spline Upwind (SU) stabilization
method, designed in space--time Isogeometric Analysis framework, in order to
make this stabilization as suitable as possible in the context of cardiac
electrophysiology. Our aim is to propose a formulation as simple and efficient
as possible, effectual in preventing spurious oscillations present in plain
Galerkin method and also reasonable from the computational cost point of view.
For these reasons we validate the method's capability with numerical
experiments, focusing on accuracy and computational aspects
Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 syndromes (MEN 2): results from the ItaMEN network analysis on the prevalence of different genotypes and phenotypes.
OBJECTIVE: Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2) is a genetic disease characterized by medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) associated (MEN 2A and 2B) or not familial MTC (FMTC) with other endocrine neoplasia due to germline RET gene mutations. The prevalence of these rare genetic diseases and their corresponding RET mutations are unknown due to the small size of the study population.
METHODS: We collected data on germline RET mutations of 250 families with hereditary MTC followed in 20 different Italian centres.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The most frequent RET amino acid substitution was Val804Met (19.6%) followed by Cys634Arg (13.6%). A total of 40 different germline RET mutations were present. Six families (2.4%) were negative for germline RET mutations. The comparison of the prevalence of RET germline mutations in the present study with those published by other European studies showed a higher prevalence of Val804Met and Ser891Ala mutations and a lower prevalence of Leu790Phe and Tyr791Phe (P<0.0001). A statistically significant higher prevalence of mutations affecting non-cysteine codons was also found (P<0.0001). Furthermore, the phenotype data collection showed an unexpected higher prevalence of FMTC (57.6%) with respect to other MEN 2 syndromes (34% MEN 2A and 6.8% of MEN 2B). In conclusion, we observed a statistically significant different pattern of RET mutations in Italian MEN 2 families with respect to other European studies and a higher prevalence of FMTC phenotype. The different ethnic origins of the patients and the particular attention given to analysing apparently sporadic MTC for RET germline mutations may explain these findings
Physiological quality, content and activity of antioxidants in soybean seeds artificially aged.
ABSTRACT - The objective of this study was to evaluate physiological quality, content, and activity of antioxidants, in soybean seeds subjected to accelerated aging during different periods. Seeds of cultivars BRS 258, BRS 262 and BRS 268, subjected to accelerated aging during 12, 24, 36 and 48 hours and non-aged seeds were used. After each aging period, the seed were evaluated by tests of: germination; first count and tetrazolium. The total of phenolic compounds, total flavonoides, total of isoflavones, and activity for eliminating ABTS°+ radicals were quantified. There were differences among cultivars according to vigor and viability only after seeds were aged. Cultivars BRS 158 and BRS 268 have shown better seed physiological quality in each aging period; however, not presenting higher amounts of isoflavones and efficiency in removing free radicals. For all cultivars, the values for total of phenolic compounds, as well as total of flavonoids have shown quadratic positive behavior; the values for isoflavones remained constant and the vigor and viability showed contrary trend to activity of antioxidant agents. RESUMO: Qualidade fisiológica, conteúdo e atividade de antioxidantes presentes em sementes de soja envelhecidas artificialmente. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a qualidade fisiológica, o conteúdo e a atividade de agentes antioxidantes presentes em sementes de soja envelhecidas durante diferentes períodos. Foram utilizadas sementes das cultivares BRS 258, BRS 262 e BRS 268, envelhecidas durante 12, 24, 36 e 48 h e sementes não envelhecidas. Após cada período de envelhecimento, as sementes foram avaliadas pelo testes de: germinação; primeira contagem e tetrazólio. Foram quantificados: compostos fenólicos totais; flavonóides totais; total de isoflavonas e atividade eliminadora do radical ABTS°+. Houve diferença entre as cultivares em relação ao vigor e viabilidade somente quando foram envelhecidas. BRS 158 e BRS 268 apresentaram melhor qualidade fisiológica de sementes em cada período de envelhecimento, porém, não apresentaram maior quantidade de isoflavonas e eficiência no sequestro dos radicais livres. Para todas as cultivares, os valores de compostos fenólicos totais, assim como os flavonóides totais, apresentaram comportamento quadrático positivo; os valores das isoflavonas permaneceram constantes e o vigor e a viabilidade apresentaram tendência contrária à atividade dos agentes antioxidantes
A prospective longitudinal study of Pasireotide in Nelson's syndrome
PURPOSE: Nelson's syndrome is a challenging condition that can develop following bilateral adrenalectomy for Cushing's disease, with high circulating ACTH levels, pigmentation and an invasive pituitary tumor. There is no established medical therapy. The aim of the study was to assess the effects of pasireotide on plasma ACTH and tumor volume in Nelson's syndrome. METHODS: Open labeled multicenter longitudinal trial in three steps: (1) a placebo-controlled acute response test; (2) 1 month pasireotide 300-600 μg s.c. twice-daily; (3) 6 months pasireotide long-acting-release (LAR) 40-60 mg monthly. RESULTS: Seven patients had s.c. treatment and 5 proceeded to LAR treatment. There was a significant reduction in morning plasma ACTH during treatment (mean ± SD; 1823 ± 1286 ng/l vs. 888.0 ± 812.8 ng/l during the s.c. phase vs. 829.0 ± 1171 ng/l during the LAR phase, p < 0.0001). Analysis of ACTH levels using a random intercept linear mixed-random effects longitudinal model showed that ACTH (before the morning dose of glucocorticoids) declined significantly by 26.1 ng/l per week during the 28-week of treatment (95% CI - 45.2 to - 7.1, p < 0.01). An acute response to a test dose predicted outcome in 4/5 patients. Overall, there was no significant change in tumor volumes (1.4 ± 0.9 vs. 1.3 ± 1.0, p = 0.86). Four patients withdrew during the study. Hyperglycemia occurred in 6 patients. CONCLUSIONS: Pasireotide lowers plasma ACTH levels in patients with Nelson's syndrome. A longer period of treatment may be needed to assess the effects of pasireotide on tumor volume. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Clinical Trials.gov ID, NCT01617733
Growth hormone-releasing hormone resistance in pseudohypoparathyroidism type Ia: New evidence for imprinting of the Gsα gene
Heterozygous inactivating mutations in the Gs\u3b1 gene cause Albright's hereditary osteodystrophy. Consistent with the observation that only maternally inherited mutations lead to resistance to hormone action [pseudohypoparathyroidism type Ia (PHP Ia)], recent studies provided evidence for a predominant maternal origin of Gs\u3b1 transcripts in endocrine organs, such as thyroid, gonad, and pituitary. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of pituitary resistance to hypothalamic hormones acting via Gs\u3b1-coupled receptors in patients with PHP Ia. Six of nine patients showed an impaired GH responsiveness to GHRH plus arginine, consistent with a complete GH deficiency (GH peak from 2.6-8.6 \u3bcg/liter, normal > 16.5), and partial (GH peak 13.9 and 13.6 \u3bcg/liter) and normal responses were found in two and one patient, respectively. Accordingly, IGF-I levels were below and in the low-normal range in seven and two patients. All patients had a normal cortisol response to 1 \u3bcg ACTH test, suggesting a normal corticotroph function that was confirmed by a normal ACTH and cortisol response to CRH test in three patients. In conclusion, we report that in addition to PTH and TSH resistance, patients with PHP Ia display variable degrees of GHRH resistance, consistent with Gs\u3b1 imprinting in human pituitary
The quality of working life and institutional support for work in professionals of public and private entities in Lima
La calidad de vida laboral es un constructo que ha demandado de muchos esfuerzos académicos y de investigación para delimitar sus alcances, especialmente en los países desarrollados. En el Perú, en cambio no se ha investigado mucho, menos sobre el rol del soporte institucional para el trabajo. Así, nuestro objetivo es conocer la relación entre calidad de vida laboral y el soporte institucional para el trabajo, en una muestra de 638 profesionales de organizaciones públicas y privadas que estudiaban maestrías, doctorados, segundas especialidades y diplomados de variadas especialidades en una universidad pública y otra privada, a quienes se le aplicó el cuestionario Calidad de Vida en el Trabajo (CVT GOHISALO), elaborado por González, Hidalgo, Salazar, Preciado (2010) en México. Nuestros hallazgos indican que existe insatisfacción en un alto porcentaje de profesionales tanto respecto de la calidad de vida laboral como del soporte institucional para el trabajo; así como hay una asociación de interdependencia entre ambas variables. Un análisis de estas variables con algunos factores socio demográficos y organizacionales nos permitió conocer las diferencias de opinión de los grupos con base en sus percepciones y experiencias laborales de los participantes.The quality of working life is a construct that has demanded many academic and research efforts to delimit its scope, especially in the developed countries. In Peru, however, much research has not been done, much less on the role of institutional support for work. Thus, our objective is to know the relationship between quality of work life and the institutional support for work. Using a sample of 638 professionals from public and private organizations in Lima and provinces, who studied masters, doctorates, second specialties and graduates of various specialties in a public and private university. Applying the questionnaire "Quality of Life at Work" (CVT GOHISALO) prepared by Raquel González-Baltazar, Gustavo Hidalgo-Santacruz, José G. Salazar Estrada, María L Preciado-Serrano (2010) in Mexico. Our findings indicate that there is dissatisfaction among a high percentage of professionals regarding both the quality of work life and institutional support for work; as well as there is an association of interdependence between both variables. An analysis of these variables with some socio-demographic and organizational factors allowed us to know the differences of opinion of the groups based on their perceptions and work experiences of the participants
AME position statement on adrenal incidentaloma.
Objective: To assess currently available evidence on adrenal incidentaloma and provide recommendations for clinical practice. Design: A panel of experts (appointed by the Italian Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AME)) appraised the methodological quality of the relevant studies, summarized their results, and discussed the evidence reports to find consensus. Radiological assessment: Unenhanced computed tomography (CT) is recommended as the initial test with the use of an attenuation value of <= 10 Hounsfield units (HU) to differentiate between adenomas and non-adenomas. For tumors with a higher baseline attenuation value, we suggest considering delayed contrast-enhanced CT studies. Positron emission tomography (PET) or PET/CT should be considered when CT is inconclusive, whereas fine needle aspiration biopsy may be used only in selected cases suspicious of metastases (after biochemical exclusion of pheochromocytoma). Hormonal assessment: Pheochromocytoma and excessive overt cortisol should be ruled out in all patients, whereas primary aldosteronism has to be considered in hypertensive and/or hypokalemic patients. The 1 mg overnight dexamethasone suppression test is the test recommended for screening of subclinical Cushing's syndrome (SCS) with a threshold at 138 nmol/l for considering this condition. A value of 50 nmol/l virtually excludes SCS with an area of uncertainty between 50 and 138 nmol/l. Management: Surgery is recommended for masses with suspicious radiological aspects and masses causing overt catecholamine or steroid excess. Data are insufficient to make firm recommendations for or against surgery in patients with SCS. However, adrenalectomy may be considered when an adequate medical therapy does not reach the treatment goals of associated diseases potentially linked to hypercortisolism
Dusty plasma in active galactic nuclei
Since many years we know that dust in the form of the dusty-molecular torus
is responsible for the obscuration in active galactic nuclei (AGN) at large
viewing angles and thus for the classification of AGN. Recently, we gained some
observational and theoretical insight into geometry of the region and the role
of the dust in the dynamics of the outflow and failed winds. We will briefly
touch on all these aspects, including our dust-based model (FRADO - Failed
Radiatively Accelerated Dusty Outflow) of the formation of the Balmer lines in
