    Smokers\u27 Compensation: Toward a Blueprint for Federal Regulation of Cigarette Manufacturers

    Although nothing is certain in Washington, sweeping federal legislation in the cigarette area is more likely now than has ever been the case. Congress is currently considering several proposals for comprehensive federal regulation of the cigarette market, a market that has until now gone largely untouched by government intervention. Among those proposals, the one that has received the most attention, and the one that in fact motivated policy makers to look anew at the problems posed by cigarettes, is the proposed national tobacco resolution (the Proposed Resolution ). The Proposed Resolution, which has been advanced by a coalition of state attorneys general and tobacco companies, would grant cigarette manufacturers immunity from all class action and attorney general lawsuits and punitive damages for past harms in exchange for changes in FDA regulatory authority, limitations on advertising by tobacco companies, and $368.5 billion in payouts over 25 years

    Survival of verapamil-poisoned rats treated with triiodothyronine.

    Life-threatening toxicity due to calcium channel blocker ingestion is commonly encountered by emergency medicine physicians and toxicologists. Despite a vast array of research on its treatment, results have proven inconsistent. The goal of this study is to evaluate potential vasopressor effects of triiodothyronine (T3) in rats poisoned with verapamil. Following anesthesia and intubation, ten Sprague-Dawley rats were given intravenous verapamil infusion of 10 mg/kg/h. This dose was titrated until a mean arterial pressure (MAP) of 50-55 mmHg was achieved and maintained for a period of at least 5 min. The verapamil infusion was then maintained at that rate. Five rats were randomized to receive a T3 bolus of 0.4 mcg/kg preceding an infusion of 1.5 mcg/kg/day which was doubled every 2 min until any of the following endpoints: systolic blood pressure of 100 mmHg, an elapsed time of 60 min, or death. The other five received an equal volume of normal saline solution. The primary outcome measure was survival with secondary outcomes of MAP and heart rate. The T3 group did have a slightly longer, yet not statistically significant, average time to cessation of electrical activity-30.0 +/- 14.4 min versus 23.8 +/- 9.5 min in the placebo group. Average MAP decreased nearly identically in the two groups. Heart rates were not reliable indicators of toxicity in this rat model as there was little decrease until immediately prior to death in most animals. Despite significant variability in toxicity among individual animals, no statistically significant difference in survival time, heart rate, or MAP was found between groups treated with T3 and those receiving saline

    Ion energy distributions in inductively coupled plasmas having a biased boundary electrode

    In many plasma materials processing applications requiring energetic ion bombardment such as plasma etching, control of the time-averaged ion energy distributions (IEDs) to surfaces is becoming increasingly important to discriminate between surface processes having different threshold energies. Inductively coupled plasmas (ICPs) are attractive in this regard since the plasma potential is low and so the energy of ion fluxes can be more finely tuned with externally applied biases. In these situations, pulsed plasmas provide another level of control as the IEDs from different times during the pulse power period can be combined to create the desired time-averaged IED. A recent development in controlling of IEDs in ICPs is the use of a boundary electrode (BE) in which a continuous or pulsed dc bias is applied to shift the plasma potential and modify the IEDs to surfaces without significant changes in the bulk plasma properties. Combinations of pulsing the ICP power and the BE bias provide additional flexibility to craft IEDs. In this paper we discuss results from a computational investigation of IEDs to a grounded substrate in low-pressure (a few to 50 mTorr) ICPs sustained in argon. Results are compared with experimental measurements of plasma properties and IEDs.     Investigating the clinical use of structured light plethysmography to assess lung function in children with neuromuscular disorders

    BackgroundChildren and young people with neuromuscular disorders (NMD), such as Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), develop progressive respiratory muscles weakness and pulmonary restriction. Pulmonary function monitoring of the decline in lung function allows for timely intervention with cough assist techniques and nocturnal non-invasive ventilation (NIV). NMD may find the measurement of lung function difficult using current techniques. Structured Light Plethysmography (SLP) has been proposed as a novel, non-contact, self-calibrating, non-invasive method of assessing lung function. The overarching aim of this study was to investigate the use of SLP as a novel method for monitoring respiratory function in children with neuromuscular disease.MethodsSLP thoraco-abdominal (TA) displacement was correlated with forced vital capacity measurements recorded by spirometry and the repeatability of the measurements with both methods examined. SLP tidal breathing parameters were investigated to assess the range and repeatability of regional right and left side TA displacement and rib cage and abdominal wall displacement.ResultsThe comparison of the FVC measured with SLP and with spirometry, while having good correlation (R = 0.78) had poor measurement agreement (95% limits of agreement: -1.2 to 1.2L) The mean relative contribution of right and left TA displacement in healthy controls was 50:50 with a narrow range. Repeatability of this measure with SLP was found to be good in healthy controls and moderate in NMD children with/without scoliosis but with a wider range. The majority of the control group displayed a predominant rib cage displacement during tidal breathing and those who displayed predominant abdominal wall displacement showed displacement of both regions close to 50:50 with similar results for the rib cage and abdomen. In comparison, children with NMD have a more variable contribution for all of these parameters. In addition, SLP was able to detect a reduction in abdominal contribution to TA displacement with age in the DMD group and detect paradoxical breathing in children with NMD. Using SLP tracings during tidal breathing we were able to identify three specific patterns of breathing amongst healthy individuals and in children with NMD.ConclusionsSLP is a novel method for measuring lung function that requires limited patient cooperation and may be especially useful in children with neuromuscular disorders.     Evolution of pathogenicity and sexual reproduction in eight Candida genomes

    Candida species are the most common cause of opportunistic fungal infection worldwide. Here we report the genome sequences of six Candida species and compare these and related pathogens and non-pathogens. There are significant expansions of cell wall, secreted and transporter gene families in pathogenic species, suggesting adaptations associated with virulence. Large genomic tracts are homozygous in three diploid species, possibly resulting from recent recombination events. Surprisingly, key components of the mating and meiosis pathways are missing from several species. These include major differences at the mating-type loci (MTL); Lodderomyces elongisporus lacks MTL, and components of the a1/2 cell identity determinant were lost in other species, raising questions about how mating and cell types are controlled. Analysis of the CUG leucine-to-serine genetic-code change reveals that 99% of ancestral CUG codons were erased and new ones arose elsewhere. Lastly, we revise the Candida albicans gene catalogue, identifying many new genes.publishe
