Genomic insights into the rapid emergence and evolution of MDR in Staphylococcus pseudintermedius.
OBJECTIVES: MDR methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) strains have emerged rapidly as major canine pathogens and present serious treatment issues and concerns to public health due to their, albeit low, zoonotic potential. A further understanding of the genetics of resistance arising from a broadly susceptible background of S. pseudintermedius is needed. METHODS: We sequenced the genomes of 12 S. pseudintermedius isolates of varied STs and resistance phenotypes. RESULTS: Nine distinct clonal lineages had acquired either staphylococcal cassette chromosome (SCC) mec elements and/or Tn5405-like elements carrying up to five resistance genes [aphA3, sat, aadE, erm(B), dfrG] to generate MRSP, MDR methicillin-susceptible S. pseudintermedius and MDR MRSP populations. The most successful and clinically problematic MDR MRSP clones, ST68 SCCmecV(T) and ST71 SCCmecII-III, have further accumulated mutations in gyrA and grlA conferring resistance to fluoroquinolones. The carriage of additional mobile genetic elements (MGEs) was highly variable, suggesting that horizontal gene transfer is frequent in S. pseudintermedius populations. CONCLUSIONS: Importantly, the data suggest that MDR MRSP evolved rapidly by the acquisition of a very limited number of MGEs and mutations, and that the use of many classes of antimicrobials may co-select for the spread and emergence of MDR and XDR strains. Antimicrobial stewardship will need to be comprehensive, encompassing human medicine and veterinary disciplines to successfully preserve antimicrobial efficacy
Ion Irradiation of Sulfuric Acid: Implications for its Stability on Europa
The Galileo near-infrared mapping spectrometer (NIMS) detected regions on Europa's surface containing distorted H2O bands. This distortion likely indicates that there are other molecules mixed with the water ice. Based on spectral comparison, some of the leading possibilities are sulfuric acid, salts. or possibly H3O(+). Previous laboratory studies have shown that sulfuric acid can be created by irradiation of H2OSO2 mixtures, and both molecules are present on Europa. Social cognition in individuals with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome and its link with psychopathology and social outcomes: a review
Background: The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is a genetic syndrome that results in a highly variable profile
of affected individuals of which impairments in the social domain and increased psychopathology are the most
prominent. Notably, 25–30% of affected individuals eventually develop schizophrenia/psychosis, predisposing persons
with the syndrome to increased risk for this disorder. Because social cognition is considered to underlie social behavior
and to be related to psychopathology, this systematic review investigated social cognition in individuals with 22q11DS
and examined reported links across its domains with psychopathology and social outcomes. This can provide the basis
for a closer understanding of the path from risk to disorder and will inform on the specific domains that can be
targeted with preventive intervention strategies.
Method: Systematic literature review of studies that reported the links between social cognitive domains and
psychopathology and/or social outcomes in individuals with 22q11DS. Electronic databases searched were
PubMed and PsycINFO.
Results: Defined eligibility criteria identified a total of ten studies to be included in the present review. Selected
studies investigated links between two domains of social cognition (emotion processing and theory of mind (ToM))
and psychopathology and/or social outcomes. With respect to the links to psychopathology, two aspects of social
cognition were related primarily to negative symptoms. Results regarding the associations to positive and emotional
symptoms (anxiety/depression) are limited and require further investigation. Even though both aspects of social
cognition were associated with social outcomes, several studies also found no links between these two domains. Both
reports invite for an additional examination of reported results and specific considerations regarding chosen constructs.
Conclusion: Although equivocal, results of the present review provide sufficient evidence that social cognition is a
useful domain for the closer elucidation of clinical outcomes and social difficulties in this population. At the same time,
longitudinal studies and consideration of other variables are also necessary for a timely understanding of affected
persons in this respect
Regulation of Macrophage‐Derived Fibroblast Growth Factor Release by Arachidonate Metabolites
The macrophage is a source of many mediators with direct and indirect fibrogenic potential. In this study, release of macrophage‐derived fibroblast growth factor (MDGF) activity by murine peritoneal macrophages is examined with regard to its regulation by arachidonate metabolites. Upon stimulation with 10 μg/ml lipopolysaccharide (LPS), resident peritoneal macrophages from CBA/J mice released MDGF activity into media rapidly, reaching maximal levels in approximately 1 h. Lysates of these stimulated cells also revealed significantly increased cell‐associated MDGF activity, composing 45% of the total assayable activity. This activity, as assayed by radioactive thymidine incorporation by primary cultures of rat lung fibroblasts, was separable from interleukin‐1 (IL‐1) activity by reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Furthermore, purified murine IL‐1 had no MDGF activity in this assay system. This stimulated MDGF release was enhanced by the cylooxygenase inhibitors indomethacin, Ibuprofen, and aspirin at micromolar concentrations, but inhibited in a dose‐dependent manner by prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). On the other hand, nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA), a lipoxygenase inhibitor was inhibitory at 0.1 and 0.4 μM but not at 2.5 μM. Zymosan‐stimulated macrophages also markedly increased MDGF release, albeit with a different time course which was characterized by a delay of approximately 7 h before peak levels were attained. Such stimulation, which is known to cause increased lipoxygenase activity, was also inhibited by 0.5 μM NDGA. In contrast, the lipoxygenase pathway products leukotrienes B4 (LTB4) and C4 (LTC4) stimulated MDGF release in a dose‐dependent (10‐10‐10‐8 M) manner, with LTC4 being more potent on a per unit dose basis. Stimulation by LTC4 was inhibited by the putative leukotriene receptor antagonist, FPL55712, while LTD4 and LTE4 did not stimulate MDGF release, thus suggesting the mediation of this effect by specific LTC4 receptors. These data suggest also that products of the cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways are potentially important both as exogenous (ie, derived from cells other than the macrophage itself) and auto‐ or self‐regulators of macrophage MDGF release. This, in turn, implies that cyclooxygenase products are antifibrogenic and important in maintaining or returning to the quiescent or normal state, whereas the lipoxygenase products are profibrogenic and important in induction of fibrosis or wound‐healing and tissue repair. Heat Transfer to Longitudinal Laminar Flow Between Cylinders
Consideration is given to the fully developed heat transfer characteristics for longitudinal laminar flow between cylinders arranged in an equilateral triangular array. The analysis is carried out for the condition of uniform heat transfer per unit length. Solutions are obtained for the temperature distribution, and from these, Nusselt numbers are derived for a wide range of spacing-to-diameter ratios. It is found that as the spacing ratio increases, so also does the wall-to-bulk temperature difference for a fixed heat transfer per unit length. Corresponding to a uniform surface temperature around the circumference of a cylinder, the circumferential variation of the local heat flux is computed. For spacing ratios of 1.5 - 2.0 and greater, uniform peripheral wall temperature and uniform peripheral heat flux are simultaneously achieved. A simplified analysis which neglects circumferential variations is also carried out, and the results are compared with those from the more exact formulation

Dilute ferrimagnetic semiconductors in Fe-substituted spinel ZnGaO
Solid solutions of nominal composition
[ZnGaO][FeO], of the semiconducting spinel
ZnGaO with the ferrimagnetic spinel FeO have been prepared with
= 0.05, 0.10, and 0.15. All samples show evidence for long-range magnetic
ordering with ferromagnetic hysteresis at low temperatures. Magnetization as a
function of field for the = 0.15 sample is S-shaped at temperatures as high
as 200 K. M\"ossbauer spectroscopy on the = 0.15 sample confirms the
presence of Fe, and spontaneous magnetization at 4.2 K. The magnetic
behavior is obtained without greatly affecting the semiconducting properties of
the host; diffuse reflectance optical spectroscopy indicates that Fe
substitution up to = 0.15 does not affect the position of the band edge
absorption. These promising results motivate the possibility of dilute
ferrimagnetic semiconductors which do not require carrier mediation of the

Trained laser-patterned carbon as high-performance mechanical sensors
We describe the mechanical properties of turbostratically graphitized carbon films obtained by carbon laser-patterning (CLaP) and their application as bending or mechanical pressure sensors. Stable conductive carbonized films were imprinted on a flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate by laser-induced carbonization. After initial gentle bending, i.e. training, these sponge-like porous films show a quantitative and reversible change in resistance upon bending or application of pressure in normal loading direction. Maximum response values of ΔR/R0 = 388% upon positive bending (tensile stress) and −22.9% upon negative bending (compression) are implicit for their high sensitivity towards mechanical deformation. Normal mechanical loading in a range between 0 and 500 kPa causes a response between ΔR/R0 = 0 and −15%. The reversible increase or decrease in resistance is attributed to compression or tension of the turbostratically graphitized domains, respectively.
