    Tunneling transport in NSN junctions made of Majorana nanowires across the topological quantum phase transition

    We theoretically consider transport properties of a normal metal (N)- superconducting semiconductor nanowire (S)-normal metal (N) structure (NSN) in the context of the possible existence of Majorana bound states in disordered semiconductor-superconductor hybrid systems in the presence of spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting induced by an external magnetic field. We study in details the transport signatures of the topological quantum phase transition as well as the existence of the Majorana bound states in the electrical transport properties of the NSN structure. Our theory includes the realistic nonperturbative effects of disorder, which is detrimental to the topological phase (eventually suppressing the superconducting gap completely), and the effects of the tunneling barriers (or the transparency at the tunneling NS contacts), which affect (and suppress) the zero bias conductance peak associated with the zero energy Majorana bound states. We show that in the presence of generic disorder and barrier transparency the interpretation of the zero bias peak as being associated with the Majorana bound state is problematic since the nonlocal correlations between the two NS contacts at two ends may not manifest themselves in the tunneling conductance through the whole NSN structure. We establish that a simple modification of the standard transport measurements using conductance differences (rather than the conductance itself as in a single NS junction) as the measured quantity can allow direct observation of the nonlocal correlations inherent in the Majorana bound states and enables the mapping out of the topological phase diagram (even in the presence of considerable disorder) by precisely detecting the topological quantum phase transition point.Comment: 34 pages, 7 figures, 1 table.     Interplay of disorder and interaction in Majorana quantum wires

    We study the interplay between disorder and interaction in one-dimensional topological superconductors which carry localized Majorana zero-energy states. Using Abelian bosonization and the perturbative renormalization group (RG) approach, we obtain the RG-flow and the associated scaling dimensions of the parameters and identify the critical points of the low-energy theory. We predict a quantum phase transition from a topological superconducting phase to a non-topological localized phase, and obtain the phase boundary between these two phases as a function of the electron-electron interaction and the disorder strength in the nanowire. Based on an instanton analysis which incorporates the effect of disorder, we also identify a large regime of stability of the Majorana-carrying topological phase in the parameter space of the model.Comment: New version includes a section and an appendix with a detailed study on the effect of interaction and disorder on the stability of Majorana end-states. 6 pages, 1 figur

We propose direct experimental studies of NSN junctions (rather than just a single NS junction) in order to establish the existence of Majorana bound states and the topological superconducting phase in semiconductor nanowires of current interest. Throughout the work we emphasize that the NSN transport properties are sensitive to both the bulk topological phase and the end Majorana bound states, and thus the NSN junction is well-suited for studying the non-local correlations between the end Majorana modes as well as the bulk TQPT itself.Fil: Lobos, Alejandro Martin.     Detection of Remote Harmonics Using SVD

    The paper examines the singular value decomposition (SVD) for detection of remote harmonics in signals, in the presence of high noise contaminating the measured waveform. When the number of harmonics is very large and at the same time certain harmonics are distant from the other, the conventional frequency detecting methods are not satisfactory. The methods developed for locating the frequencies as closely spaced sinusoidal signals are appropriate tools for the investigation of power system signals containing harmonics differing significantly in their multiplicity. The SVD methods are ideal tools for such cases. To investigate the methods several experiments have been performed. For comparison, similar experiments have been repeated using the FFT with the same number of samples and sampling period. The comparison has proved an absolute superiority of the SVD for signals burried in noise. However, the SVD computation is much more complex than the FFT, and requires more extensive mathematical manipulations

    gtfB and spaP virulence genes in Streptococcus mutans strains and their relationship with the DMFT index

Material y método: A partir de un total de 120 individuos de ambos sexos, se conformaron 4 grupos de 30 personas, que se separaron de acuerdo con los siguientes rangos etarios: 3-5, 6-9, 12-15 y mayores de 18 años. A cada individuo se le determinó el índice COPD y ceod según correspondiera y se realizó recuento salival de S. mutans. La detección de los genes de virulencia: gtfB y spaP se realizó por reacción en cadena de la polimerasa convencional. Resultados: Se estableció una asociación positiva entre el recuento bacteriano e índice COPD y ceod. El 100% de las cepas aisladas evidenciaron la presencia del gen gtfB y el 63,6% presentaron el gen spaP. No hubo evidencia estadísticamente significativa que relacionará un alto recuento bacteriano e índice COPD y ceod con la mayor presencia de genes que codifican factores de virulencia en cepas de S. mutans. Resumen: Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the presence of gtfB and spaP virulence genes in Streptococcus mutans strains isolated from saliva taken from individuals of different ages. Material and method: A total of 120 individuals of both sexes were studied. They were assigned to one of 4 groups, with 30 individuals in each one, according to age; 3-5, 6-9, 12-15, and older than 18 years old. DMFT (decayed, missing, and filled teeth) and DMFT indexes were determined in each participant, depending on his/her age. S. mutans microbial counts were performed. The gtfB and spaP virulence genes were detected using conventional PCR. Results: A positive association was found between microbial count and DMFT and DMFT indexes. All the isolated strains demonstrated the presence of gtfB, and 63.6% of the strains had spaP genes. No association was found between high bacterial counts or DMFT and DMFT indexes with the presence of genes that code for virulence factors in S. mutans strains

E mail: [email protected]: Periodontitis is a common oral disease produced by bacterial species that reside in the subgingival plaque. These microorganisms have been associated to atherosclerosis and it is suggested that periodontitis is a cardiovascular risk factor. Aim: To isolate periodontal bacteria from blood and atheroma samples, from patients with atherosclerosis and periodontitis. Material and methods: Twelve patients with periodontitis and a clinical diagnosis of atherosclerosis and 12 patients with periodontitis but without atherosclerosis were studied. Blood samples were obtained immediately before and after scaling and root planing. The samples were incubated in aerobic and anaerobic conditions. One week after scaling, atheromatous plaques were obtained during endarterectomy in the 12 patients with atherosclerosis. These were homogenized and cultured for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Microorganisms were identified by means ofPCR. Results: Five patients with and two without atherosclerosis, had bacteremia after scaling and root planing. Bacterial species isolated from blood samples were the same found in periodontic pockets. Four atheromatous plaques of patients with bacteremia yielded positive cultures. The isolated bacteria were the same found in blood samples and periodontal pockets. Conclusions: Bacteremia occurred in seven of 24 patients after scaling and root planing. In four patients, the same species found in periodontic pockets and blood cultures were detected in atherosclerotic plaques obtained one week after the dental procedure

    First Record of Helicoverpa armigera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in Argentina

    Debido a la reciente detección de Helicoverpa armigera en Brasil y Paraguay en 2013, se colocaron trampas de feromonas en el cultivo de garbanzo en dos localidades de la provincia de Tucumán para detectar la presencia de este noctuido en Argentina. Esta plaga fue detectada en ambas localidades confirmando la presencia de H. armigera en Argentina por primera vez.Because of the recent presence of Helicoverpa armigera in Brazil and Paraguay in 2013, pheromone traps were deployed in chickpea crops at 2 localities in Tucumán province to determine if this noctuid was present in Argentina.
