Einstein-Cartan-Dirac gravity with symmetry breaking
Einstein-Cartan theory is an extension of the standard formulation of General
Relativity where torsion (the antisymmetric part of the affine connection) is
non-vanishing. Just as the space-time metric is sourced by the stress-energy
tensor of the matter fields, torsion is sourced via the spin density tensor,
whose physical effects become relevant at very high spin densities. In this
work we introduce an extension of the Einstein-Cartan-Dirac theory with an
electromagnetic (Maxwell) contribution minimally coupled to torsion. This
contribution breaks the gauge symmetry, which is suggested by the
possibility of a torsion-induced phase transition in the early Universe,
yielding new physics in extreme (spin) density regimes. We obtain the
generalized gravitational, electromagnetic and fermionic field equations for
this theory, estimate the strength of the corrections, and discuss the
corresponding phenomenology. In particular, we briefly address some
astrophysical considerations regarding the relevance of the effects which might
take place inside ultra-dense neutron stars with strong magnetic fields
(magnetars).Comment: 15 double column pages; v2: removed one section and added content to

Gravitational induced particle production through a nonminimal curvature-matter coupling
We consider the possibility of a gravitationally induced particle production
through the mechanism of a nonminimal curvature-matter coupling. An interesting
feature of this gravitational theory is that the divergence of the
energy-momentum tensor is nonzero. As a first step in our study we reformulate
the model in terms of an equivalent scalar-tensor theory, with two arbitrary
potentials. By using the formalism of open thermodynamic systems, we interpret
the energy balance equations in this gravitational theory from a thermodynamic
point of view, as describing irreversible matter creation processes. The
particle number creation rates, the creation pressure, and the entropy
production rates are explicitly obtained as functions of the scalar field and
its potentials, as well as of the matter Lagrangian. The temperature evolution
laws of the newly created particles are also obtained. The cosmological
implications of the model are briefly investigated, and it is shown that the
late-time cosmic acceleration may be due to particle creation processes.
Furthermore, it is also shown that due to the curvature--matter coupling,
during the cosmological evolution a large amount of comoving entropy is also
produced.Comment: 15 pages; accepted for publication in the European Physical Journal
Generalized gravity and the late-time cosmic acceleration
High-precision observational data have confirmed with startling evidence that
the Universe is currently undergoing a phase of accelerated expansion. This
phase, one of the most important and challenging current problems in cosmology,
represents a new imbalance in the governing gravitational equations.
Historically, physics has addressed such imbalances by either identifying
sources that were previously unaccounted for, or by altering the gravitational
theory. Several candidates, responsible for this expansion, have been proposed
in the literature, in particular, dark energy models and modified gravity
models, amongst others. Outstanding questions are related to the nature of this
so-called "dark energy" that is driving this acceleration, and whether it is
due to the vacuum energy or a dynamical field. On the other hand, the late-time
cosmic acceleration may be due to modifications of General Relativity. In this
work we explore a generalised modified gravity theory, namely
gravity, where is the Ricci scalar, is a scalar field, and is a
kinetic term. This theory contains a wide range of dark energy and modified
gravity models. We considered specific models and applications to the late-time
cosmic acceleration.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure; slightly revised version, displayed name

Palatini wormholes and energy conditions from the prism of General Relativity
Wormholes are hypothetical shortcuts in spacetime that in General Relativity
unavoidably violate all of the pointwise energy conditions. In this paper, we
consider several wormhole spacetimes that, as opposed to the standard
\emph{designer} procedure frequently employed in the literature, arise directly
from gravitational actions including additional terms resulting from
contractions of the Ricci tensor with the metric, and which are formulated
assuming independence between metric and connection (Palatini approach). We
reinterpret such wormhole solutions under the prism of General Relativity and
study the matter sources that thread them. We discuss the size of violation of
the energy conditions in different cases, and how this is related to the same
spacetimes when viewed from the modified gravity side.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. Significant changes mainly in introduction and

Urban Forest Tweeting: Social Media as More-Than-Human Communication in Tokyo’s Rinshinomori Park
Urban parks are places that have significant impact on the physical and mental health of citizens, but they are also for safeguarding biodiversity and thus fostering human–nature interactions in the everyday landscape. The exploration of these spaces through social media represents a novel field of research that is contributing to revealing patterns of visitor behavior. However, there is a lack of comparable research from a non-anthropocentric perspective. What if we could use social media as a more-than-human communication medium? This research aims to reveal the possibility of communicating the urban forest’s voice through the examination of the official Twitter account of a metropolitan park in Tokyo. To this end, an analysis of the content of the messages is carried out, focusing on the narrative voice from which the message is told, the protagonists, the action performed, the network of actors deployed, and the place where it occurs. It is found that the majority of these messages are delivered from a non-human perspective, where plants, animals, or meteorological agents behave deploying complex networks of more-than-human interaction. The current study reveals the latent potential of non-humans as possible agents within the realm of social media, which can mediate the relationships between humans and their environment. It introduces a layer that can be incorporated into future lines of research, as well as provides a model case that illustrates a good practice in the management and communication of urban green spaces. This research was funded by the European Union—Next Generation EU Margarita Salas Grant and by the project LABPA-CM: CONTEMPORARY CRITERIA, METHODS and TECHNIQUES FOR LANDSCAPE KNOWLEDGE AND CONSERVATION (H2019/HUM5692), funded by the European Social Fund and the Madrid regional government
