    Global Professionalism - Local Professional Identities: Journalistic Professionalism in Contemporary Russia

    This paper explores the interpretation and adaptation of journalistic professionalism in Russia. By analysing professionalism(s) thought journalists own articulation of their practices, it discusses myths, versions of cultural contexts and legitimations of journalists’ social position and social trust-building. Furthermore, it challenges the idea of a ‘global model of professionalism’, by illuminating historical traditions and philosophical patterns, which influenced the development of journalism as a professional practice. When writing this paper I was not even two years into my PhD and have just started my field-research. Since then, I have developed a more focussed approach to my study, a more theoretically underpinned methodology and a more buttress system of argumentation. Nonetheless, I sill hold on to the main idea of this paper –local differences matter

    The paper treats the dating of the Sabatynivka group of Cucuteni-Trypillia. The authors compared the sets of radiocarbon dates, which were obtained for the sites of the aspect, analyzed the relative chronology of the Sabatynivka group, and checked their correspondence with the dating of the contemporaneous cultural aspects. This approach helped to establish the synchronism of the Sabatynivka group with the Skelia phase of Seredny Stog culture, Gumelniţa A2 and Cucuteni A3-A4.     Development of novel vaccine candidates for measles

    Despite the availability of live attenuated measles virus vaccines, a large number of measles-associated deaths occur among infants in developing countries during the "window of susceptibility" (age 4-9 months). During this period declining maternal antibody titers are no longer protective against wild-type measles virus (MV) and impede successful immunization with the live attenuated vaccines. Therefore, the development of a safe vaccine that would induce protective immunity in the presence of maternally derived MV-specific antibodies in young infants and would close the "window of susceptibility" is desirable. Since adenoviruses have been shown as suitable vaccine candidates capable of eliciting potent protection against mucosal infectious diseases, the ability of an adenovirus-vectored anti-measles vaccine to elicit robust immune responses against MV was assessed in this study. Mice immunized intramuscularly or intranasally with a combination of human adenovirus serotype 5 (Ad5) recombinants expressing MV hemagglutinin (H) and fusion (F) glycoproteins developed MV-specific neutralizing antibody titers similar for both routes of immunization. However, intramuscular immunization of mice with Ad5 recombinants resulted in induction of a predominant T helper type (Th1) immune response, whereas intranasal immunization induced a balanced Th1/Th2 immune response. Furthermore, intranasal immunization resulted in increased titers of MV-specific immunoglobulin A (IgA) in lungs in comparison to intramuscularly immunized animals. The ability of the Ad5 recombinants to induce protective immune responses in cotton rats by different routes of administration was also evaluated. Cotton rats that received a single dose of the Ad5 recombinants intramuscularly or intranasally experienced a rise in MV-specific neutralizing antibody titers and reduction of the viral RNA load in the lung tissue after intranasal MV challenge. In addition, the largest reduction in viral replication was observed in the group of cotton rats inoculated with the Ad5 recombinants intranasally. Based on these observations, the Ad5-based vaccine appears to be a suitable candidate against measles. Furthermore, a capability of purified globular head domain of MV H protein produced in a human cell line to induce MV-specific immune responses in mice was tested. Subcutaneous immunization of mice with the recombinant protein alone resulted in both humoral and cell-mediated immunity, characterized by the production of MV-specific serum IgG and neutralizing antibodies, as well as interferon-gamma and interleukin 5 (IL-5) production by in vitro restimulated splenocytes. The former responses were further enhanced by formulation of the protein with aluminium hydroxide. However, very low numbers of INF-gamma secreting cells and low levels of IgG2a in the serum suggested a Th2 immune response. Novel adjuvants (Th1-directing), as well as MV F protein should be considered for the inclusion into the vaccine formulations to induce more balanced Th1/Th2 immune responses against measles

    SAFT-γ force field for the simulation of molecular fluids: 8. hetero-group coarse-grained models of perfluoroalkylalkanes assessed with new vapour-liquid interfacial tension data

    The air-liquid interfacial behaviour of linear perfluoroalkylalkanes (PFAAs) is reported through a combined experimental and computer simulation study. The surface tensions of seven liquid PFAAs (perfluorobutylethane, F4H2; perfluorobutylpentane, F4H5; perfluorobutylhexane, F4H6, perfluorobutyloctane, F4H8; perfluorohexylethane, F6H2; perfluorohexylhexane, F6H6; and perfluorohexyloctane, F6H8) are experimentally determined over a wide temperature range (276 to 350 K). The corresponding surface thermodynamic properties and the critical temperatures of the studied compounds are estimated from the temperature dependence of the surface tension. Experimental density and vapour pressure data are employed to parameterize a generic heteronuclear coarse-grained intermolecular potential of the SAFT- γ family for PFAAs. The resulting force field is used in direct molecular dynamics simulations to predict with quantitative agreement the experimental tensions and to explore the conformations of the molecules in the interfacial region revealing a preferential alignment of the PFAA molecules towards the interface and an enrichment of the perfluoro-groups at the outer interface region

    Secondary recrystallization in Fe-3% Si alloy with (110)[001] single-component texture

    After the primary recrystallization of a preliminarily deformed (110)[001] single crystal, the texture also has the preferred (110)[001] orientation. Furthermore, the texture contains weak orientations, a major part of which is formed at the sample surface and can be described by a spectrum of scattered orientations 120вЊ©210вЊ.351 вЊ©103вЊ. A further heating leads to two concurrent processes taking place in the samples, i.e., the normal growth of Goss grains and secondary recrystallization. Abnormally grown crystals are represented by a quartet of orientations related with the initial Goss orientation by a rotation around [011], [011̄], [101], and [101̄] axes at an angle of ∼30. The crystallographic relationship between the initial and final grain orientations can be explained by their closeness to special misorientations as follows: Σ9, Σ19a, Σ27a, and Σ33a (rotation around 〈110⌠axes to close angles). © 2013 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd

    Formation of special misorientations related to transition bands in structure of deformed and annealed single crystal (110)[001] of Fe-3% Si alloy

    A transition band between two deformation bands retains for the most part the orientation (110)[001] and shrinks to a thin interlayer or boundary with increasing degree of deformation. At a certain stage of deformation, the microvolumes that are arranged along the interface of the bands become adjusted to special misorientations. During primary recrystallization, cube-on-edge (Goss) grains, which grow from the transition band, have portions of special boundaries common with the deformed matrix; these boundaries were found earlier between the deformation bands. This indicates that the local domains with special misorientations formed at the stage of cold deformation transform during annealing into the corresponding primary-recrystallization nuclei. © 2013 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd

    Personalized patterns of teachers training in document science course subjects in a vocational pedagogical university

    The article is focused on the study of challenging issues which occur when updating methodological-pedagogical support and applying personalized educational paths in the training of future teachers of document science course subjects for intermediate vocational education institutions, as well as according to various other programmes of students training as part of the "Vocational training (by branches)" course. The key method of the given problem research is meant to be analysis and experience summarization of vocational-oriented, academic, teaching and guiding and scientific work with the students of Russian State Vocational Pedagogical University, being taught according to principal educational programme "Document management in an organization" as part of "Vocational training (by branches)" preparation as well as learning methodological approaches for creating personalized educational paths for them. Research results: developed approaches to applying personalized educational paths in the training of students in a vocational pedagogical university; drawn-up recommendations on updating methodological-pedagogical support in the training of future teachers of document science course subjects for intermediate vocational education institutions, undertaken analysis of the possible ways of improving their training. The content of the article may prove helpful for: university faculty and universities chief executives for the improvement of the training quality of future professionals, for more effective educational process organization, for forming personalized educational paths in the training of students; for chief executives of intermediate vocational education institutions where the specialized training "Document support of management and archive science" is provided; for students being trained as part of "Vocational training (by branches)" course. © Authors

    Blood flow controls coagulation onset via the positive feedback of factor VII activation by factor Xa

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Blood coagulation is a complex network of biochemical reactions, which is peculiar in that it is time- and space-dependent, and has to function in the presence of rapid flow. Recent experimental reports suggest that flow plays a significant role in its regulation. The objective of this study was to use systems biology techniques to investigate this regulation and to identify mechanisms creating a flow-dependent switch in the coagulation onset.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Using a detailed mechanism-driven model of tissue factor (TF)-initiated thrombus formation in a two-dimensional channel we demonstrate that blood flow can regulate clotting onset in the model in a threshold-like manner, in agreement with existing experimental evidence. Sensitivity analysis reveals that this is achieved due to a combination of the positive feedback of TF-bound factor VII activation by activated factor X (Xa) and effective removal of factor Xa by flow from the activating patch depriving the feedback of "ignition". The level of this trigger (i.e. coagulation sensitivity to flow) is controlled by the activity of tissue factor pathway inhibitor.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This mechanism explains the difference between red and white thrombi observed <it>in vivo </it>at different shear rates. It can be speculated that this is a special switch protecting vascular system from uncontrolled formation and spreading of active coagulation factors in vessels with rapidly flowing blood.</p
