    Orbital Magnetic Ordering in Disordered Mesoscopic Systems

    We present some model calculations of persistent currents in disordered one- and two-dimensional mesoscopic systems. We use the tight-binding model and calculate numerically the currents in small systems for several values of disorder. Next we fit appropriate analytical formulae, and using them we find self- -sustaining currents and critical fields in larger, more realistic systems with different shapes of the Fermi surfaces.Comment: 16 pages, LaTeX, 8 figures, in print in J.     The Two-fluid Description of a Mesoscopic Cylinder

    Quantum coherence of electrons interacting via the magnetostatic coupling and confined to a mesoscopic cylinder is discussed. The electromagnetic response of a system is studied. It is shown that the electromagnetic kernel has finite low frequency limit what implies infinite conductivity. It means that part of the electrons is in a coherent state and the system can be in general described by a two-fluid model. The coherent behavior is determind by the interplay between finite size effects and the correlations coming from the magnetostatic interactions (the interaction is considered in the mean field approximation). The related persistent currents depend on the geometry of the Fermi Surface. If the Fermi Surface has some flat portions the self-sustaining currents can be obtained.     The topic of the article are selected aspects of the language of Dobra Czytanka wg św. ziom’a Janka, which is a stylized hip-hop slang version of the Gospel According to St. John. The article presents a selection of lexical and phraseological devices that depart from the traditional canon of Polish Biblical style. The features include various modifications in Biblical onomastics, forms of address, and in phraseology and fixed Biblical phrases. Such transformations lead to a specific desacralization of Biblical content. However, the desacralization occurs only as opposed to the texts that perpetuate the traditional Polish Biblical style, which is characterized by hieratic quality and ritualization. The authors of Czytanka make the Biblical content clear and comprehensible for representatives of hip-hop subculture, following the principle of dynamic translation of Biblical text

    The purpose of the analysis is to try to provide an answer to the question whether it is possible to determine the degree of filiational dependence of the New Testament of the Bible translated by Jakub Wujek from 1599 (abbreviation: W) from the New Testament of the Brześć Bible from 1563 (abbreviation: B) with regard to lexis. The study is accompanied by the assumption that the translation of the Brześć Bible may have partially inspired Jakub Wujek in his translation work. The data which enabled scholars to establish the scope of a possible filiational relation between the New Testament of the Bible by Wujek and the New Testament of the Brześć Bible with reference to lexis have been obtained owing to a quantitative-distributional analysis of both texts. Moreover, a comparative context has been considered, that is that between the New Testament of Gdańsk (1606) and the New Testament of the Gdańsk Bible (1632) as texts remaining in closer filiational relation with B, forming a Calvinist-Lutheran translational continuum with this translation. During the study, the number of identical lexical substitutions in place of parallel lexemes common for B and W were treated as an exponent of the degree of hypothetical lexical dependence of W from B. In the subsequent translations of the comparative context under consideration (W and B) they were replaced by alternative equivalents. The result of the analysis with the criteria thus defined is the contention that lexical dependence of W from B is hardly noticeable, which can be proved by the following numerical data: W contains 65 lexemes in total which evidence the studied dependence (they belong to the vocabulary with a frequency f = 1, exceptionally f = 2 or f = 3). They constitute barely 1.2% of the entire lexicon of W, and their total number of occurrences in the text amounts to 74, which is only 0.06% of the entire text of W

    Geodetic Measurement of Deformation East of the San Andreas Fault in Central California

    Triangulation and trilateration data from two geodetic networks located between the western edge of the Great Valley and the San Andreas fault have been used to calculate shear strain rates in the Diablo Range and to estimate the slip rate along the Calaveras and Paicines faults in Central California. Within the Diablo Range the average shear strain rate was determined for the time period between 1962 and 1982 to be 0.15 + or - 0.08 microrad/yr, with the orientation of the most compressive strain at N 16 deg E + or - 14 deg. The orientation of the principal compressive strain predicted from the azimuth of the major structures in the region is N 25 deg E. It is inferred that the measured strain is due to compression across the folds of this area: the average shear straining corresponds to a relative shortening rate of 4.5 + or - 2.4 mm/yr. From an examination of wellbore breakout orientations and the azimuths of P-axes from earthquake focal mechanisms the inferred orientation of maximum compressive stress was found to be similar to the direction of maximum compressive strain implied by the trend of local fold structures. Results do not support the hypothesis of uniform fault-normal compression within the Coast Ranges. From trilateration measurements made between 1972 and 1987 on lines that are within 10 km of the San Andreas fault, a slip rate of 10 to 12 mm/yr was calculated for the Calaveras-Paicines fault south of Hollister. The slip rate of the Paicines fault decreases to 4 mm/yr near Bitter

    Cardiac pathology: Prenatal diagnosis, management and outcome

    Over the years there has been steadfast increase in the quantity of patients with a prenatally detected structural congenital heart disease. Despite efforts to achieve the contrary, some of these pregnancies will end in intra-uterine death. In these patients the sole advantage of the prenatal diagnosis is the facilitation of thorough parental counseling concerning future pregnancies; additionally it might help parents better to cope with the loss of their child. The primary goal of prenatal detection of cardiac defects, however, is the enabling of better care in the immediate postnatal period and the most convincing justification for the efforts taken, would be to demonstrate that prenatally diagnosed patients have a better chance on a good outcome as a result of early initiation of therapy. This thesis shows that prenatal diagnosis of heart disease, both morphological and functional, may influence management of pregnancy and outcome for affected fetuses. It is the most important positive effect of prenatal diagnosis that the sequence of planned delivery in a center, equipped to treat this type of patients, and the immediate installment of appropriate therapy can lead to an improved long-term outcome. Lactate levels reflecting the overall oxygen deficiency experienced seem to be a good indicator to measure this possible positive effect. Planned delivery and immediate therapy may keep lactate levels of affected fetuses below 6.1 mmol/l, providing a safe starting point for surgical intervention with better chances of a normal neurophysiological development. The two extreme sides of the spectrum of prenatally encountered congenital heart disease described in this thesis, the hypoplastic left heart syndrome and Ebsteins malformation, indicate that in these cases morphology dominates outcome in a negative manner. This implies that even the best managed pregnancies, deliveries and immediate care of these patients do not assure a favourable long-term outcome. Finally data concerning the well-controlled diabetic pregnancies show that this maternal disease infringes on both the fetal cardiac anatomy and circulation. The higher incidence of congenital heart disease is predominantly located in the cono-truncal region. The circulatory changes encountered in the structurally normal heart occur later in gestation and suggest to be adaptive to ensure an increased cardiac output

    Coherent phenomena in mesoscopic systems

    A mesoscopic system of cylindrical geometry made of a metal or a semiconductor is shown to exhibit features of a quantum coherent state. It is shown that magnetostatic interaction can play an important role in mesoscopic systems leading to an ordered ground state. The temperature TT^{*} below the system exhibits long-range order is determined. The self-consistent mean field approximation of the magnetostatic interaction is performed giving the effective Hamiltonian from which the self-sustaining currents can be obtained.
