    Scaling behavior in a quantum wire with scatterers

    We study the conductance properties of a straight two-dimensional quantum wire with impurities modeled by ss-like scatterers. Their presence can lead to strong inter-channel coupling. It was shown that such systems depend sensitively on the number of transverse modes included. Based on a poor man's scaling technique we include the effect of higher modes in a renormalized coupling constant. We therefore show that the low-energy behavior of the wire is dominated by only a few modes, which hence is a way to reduce the necessary computing power.     Excitations in photoactive molecules from quantum Monte Carlo

    Despite significant advances in electronic structure methods for the treatment of excited states, attaining an accurate description of the photoinduced processes in photoactive biomolecules is proving very difficult. For the prototypical photosensitive molecules, formaldimine, formaldehyde and a minimal protonated Schiff base model of the retinal chromophore, we investigate the performance of various approaches generally considered promising for the computation of excited potential energy surfaces. We show that quantum Monte Carlo can accurately estimate the excitation energies of the studied systems if one constructs carefully the trial wave function, including in most cases the reoptimization of its determinantal part within quantum Monte Carlo. While time-dependent density functional theory and quantum Monte Carlo are generally in reasonable agreement, they yield a qualitatively different description of the isomerization of the Schiff base model. Finally, we find that the restricted open shell Kohn-Sham method is at variance with quantum Monte Carlo in estimating the lowest-singlet excited state potential energy surface for low-symmetry molecular structures.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure

    Estimates of rates for dissociative recombination of NO2+_2^+ + e^- via various mechanisms

    We estimate rates for the dissociative recombination (DR) of NO2+_2^+ + e^-. Although accurate excited state potential energy curves for the excited states of the neutral are not available, we estimate that the 1 2^2{\Phi}g_g and the 1 2^2{\Pi}g_g states of the neutral may intersect the ground state cation potential energy surface near its equilibrium geometry. Using fixed nuclei scattering calculations we estimate the rate for direct DR via these states and find it to be significant. We also perform approximate calculations of DR triggered by the indirect mechanism, which suggest that the indirect DR rate for NO2+_2^+ is insignificant compared to the direct rate.Comment: Submitted to Phys Rev

    In situ growth regime characterization of cubic GaN using reflection high energy electron diffraction

    Cubic GaN layers were grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy on 3C-SiC (001)substrates. In situ reflection high energy electron diffraction was used to quantitatively determine the Ga coverage of the GaN surface during growth. Using the intensity of the electron beam as a probe,optimum growth conditions of c-GaN were found when a 1 ML Ga coverage is formed at the surface. 1 micrometer thick c-GaN layers had a minimum surface roughness of 2.5 nm when a Ga coverage of 1 ML was established during growth. These samples revealed also a minimum full width at half maximum of the (002)rocking curve.Comment: 3pages with 4 figure

    Results of the 2007-2008 Illinois Hunter Harvest Survey

    Grant/Contract No: W-112-R-17A random sample of 3,000 potential hunters was selected from among 2007 Illinois Habitat Stamp and hunting license purchasers. An 8-page questionnaire was successfully mailed to 2,906 of the 3,000 individuals. We received 1,625 returned questionnaires, 1,620 of which were usable, for a 56% response rate. Comparisons of harvest estimates from the 2006-2007 season to the 2007-2008 season suggest harvest decreased for 10 game animal categories (rabbit, quail, pheasant, dove, gray partridge, fox squirrel, gray squirrel, red fox, gray fox, and opossum), and increased for 3 categories (woodcock, raccoon, and coyote). License sales increased 0.4% from 282,000 sold for the 2006 season to 283,000 sold in the 2007 season. This represents a recovery in license sales of less than 1% since the lowest level on record (since 1938) in 2005. Low license sales may be related to increasing difficulty in finding land to hunt. Resident hunters pursuing deer (61%) and small game species (51%) reported little difficulty in gaining access to hunting lands. However, all other seasons were associated with more difficulty in accessing land. Efforts should be undertaken to ensure that hunters are aware of the locations of public hunting lands associated with these seasons.     Seasonal lipid dynamics of the copepods Pseudocalanus minutus (Calanoida) and Oithona similis (Cyclopoida) in the Arctic Kongsfjorden (Svalbard)

    Seasonal lipid dynamics of various developmental stages were investigated in Pseudocalanus minutus and Oithona similis. For P. minutus, the dominance of 16:1(n−7), 16:4(n−3) and 20:5(n−3) fatty acids indicated a diatom-based nutrition in spring, whereas 22:6(n−3), 16:0, 18:2(n−6) and 18:1(n−9) pointed to a flagellate-based diet during the rest of the year as well as omnivorous/carnivorous low-level feeding during winter. The shorter-chain fatty alcohols 14:0 and 16:0 prevailed, also reflecting biosynthetic processes typical of omnivores or carnivores. Altogether, the lipid signatures characterized P. minutus as an opportunistic feeder. In contrast, O. similis had consistently high amounts of the 18:1(n−9) fatty acid in all stages and during all seasons pointing to a generally omnivorous/carnivorous/detritivorous diet. Furthermore, the fatty alcohol 20:1(n−9) reached high percentages especially in adult females and males, and feeding on Calanus faecal pellets is suggested. Fatty alcohols, as wax ester moieties, revealed significant seasonal variations in O. similis and a seasonal trend towards wax ester accumulation in autumn in P. minutus. P. minutus utilized its lipid deposits for development in the copepodite stages III and IV and for gonad maturation in CV and females during the dark season. However, CVs and females depended on the spring phytoplankton bloom for final maturation processes and reproduction. O. similis fueled gonad maturation and egg production for reproduction in June by wax esters, whereas reproduction in August/September co-occurred with the accumulation of new depot lipids. Both species revealed significantly higher wax ester levels in deeper (>50 m) as compared to surface (0–50 m) dwelling individuals related to a descent prior to overwintering

    Effect of growth conditions on optical properties of CdSe/ZnSe single quantum dots

    In this work, we have investigated the optical properties of two samples of CdSe quantum dots by using submicro-photoluminescence spectroscopy. The effect of vicinal-surface GaAs substrates on their properties has been also assessed. The thinner sample, grown on a substrate with vicinal surface, includes only dots with a diameter of less than 10 nm (type A islands). Islands of an average diameter of about 16 nm (type B islands) that are related to a phase transition via a Stranski-Krastanow growth process are also distributed in the thicker sample grown on an oriented substrate. We have studied the evolution of lineshapes of PL spectra for these two samples by improving spatial resolution that was achieved using nanoapertures or mesa structures.     Photon Antibunching and Magnetospectroscopy of a Single Fluorine Donor in ZnSe

    We report on the optical investigation of single electron spins bound to fluorine donor impurities in ZnSe. Measurements of photon antibunching establish the presence of single, isolated optical emitters, and magneto-optical studies are consistent with the presence of an exciton bound to the spin-impurity complex. The isolation of this single donor-bound exciton complex and its potential homogeneity offer promising prospects for a scalable semiconductor qubit with an optical interface.Comment: 3.1 pages, 3 figure
