An Exploratory Study of Lecturers' Views of Out-of-class Academic Collaboration Among Students
This article reports an exploratory study of lecturers' perceptions of out-of-class academic collaboration (OCAC) among students at a large Singapore university. Two types of OCAC were investigated: collaboration initiated by students, e.g., groups decide on their own to meet to prepare for exams, and collaboration required by teachers, e.g., teachers assign students to do projects in groups. Data were collected via one-on-one interviews with 18 faculty members from four faculties at the university. Findings suggest that OCAC, especially of a teacher-required kind, is fairly common at the university. Faculty members' views on factors affecting the success of OCAC are discussed for the light they might shed on practices to enhance the effectiveness of OCAC
Translational research in South Africa: evaluating implementation quality using a factorial design
Background: HealthWise South Africa: Life Skills for Adolescents (HW) is an evidence- based substance use and sexual risk prevention program that emphasizes the positive use of leisure time. Since 2000, this program has evolved from pilot testing through an efficacy trial involving over 7,000 youth in the Cape Town area. Beginning in 2011, through 2015, we are undertaking a new study that expands HW to all schools in the Metro South Education District.
Objective: This paper describes a research study designed in partnership with our South African collaborators that examines three factors hypothesized to affect the quality and fidelity of HW implementation: enhanced teacher training; teacher support, structure and supervision; and enhanced school environment.
Methods: Teachers and students from 56 schools in the Cape Town area will participate in this study. Teacher observations are the primary means of collecting data on factors affecting implementation quality. These factors address the practical concerns of teachers and schools related to likelihood of use and cost-effectiveness, and are hypothesized to be "active ingredients" related to high-quality program implementation in real-world settings. An innovative factorial experimental design was chosen to enable estimation of the individual effect of each of the three factors.
Results: Because this paper describes the conceptualization of our study, results are not yet available.
Conclusions: The results of this study may have both substantive and methodological implications for advancing Type 2 translational research
Bodyweight Perceptions among Texas Women: The Effects of Religion, Race/Ethnicity, and Citizenship Status
Despite previous work exploring linkages between religious participation and health, little research has looked at the role of religion in affecting bodyweight perceptions. Using the theoretical model developed by Levin et al. (Sociol Q 36(1):157–173, 1995) on the multidimensionality of religious participation, we develop several hypotheses and test them by using data from the 2004 Survey of Texas Adults. We estimate multinomial logistic regression models to determine the relative risk of women perceiving themselves as overweight. Results indicate that religious attendance lowers risk of women perceiving themselves as very overweight. Citizenship status was an important factor for Latinas, with noncitizens being less likely to see themselves as overweight. We also test interaction effects between religion and race. Religious attendance and prayer have a moderating effect among Latina non-citizens so that among these women, attendance and prayer intensify perceptions of feeling less overweight when compared to their white counterparts. Among African American women, the effect of increased church attendance leads to perceptions of being overweight. Prayer is also a correlate of overweight perceptions but only among African American women. We close with a discussion that highlights key implications from our findings, note study limitations, and several promising avenues for future research
Observation of charge-dependent azimuthal correlations and possible local strong parity violation in heavy ion collisions
Parity-odd domains, corresponding to non-trivial topological solutions of the
QCD vacuum, might be created during relativistic heavy-ion collisions. These
domains are predicted to lead to charge separation of quarks along the orbital
momentum of the system created in non-central collisions. To study this effect,
we investigate a three particle mixed harmonics azimuthal correlator which is a
\P-even observable, but directly sensitive to the charge separation effect. We
report measurements of this observable using the STAR detector in Au+Au and
Cu+Cu collisions at =200 and 62~GeV. The results are presented
as a function of collision centrality, particle separation in rapidity, and
particle transverse momentum. A signal consistent with several of the
theoretical expectations is detected in all four data sets. We compare our
results to the predictions of existing event generators, and discuss in detail
possible contributions from other effects that are not related to parity

Identified high- spectra in Cu+Cu collisions at =200 GeV
We report new results on identified (anti)proton and charged pion spectra at
large transverse momenta (3<<10 GeV/c) from Cu+Cu collisions at
=200 GeV using the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion
Collider (RHIC). This study explores the system size dependence of two novel
features observed at RHIC with heavy ions: the hadron suppression at
high- and the anomalous baryon to meson enhancement at intermediate
transverse momenta. Both phenomena could be attributed to the creation of a new
form of QCD matter. The results presented here bridge the system size gap
between the available pp and Au+Au data, and allow the detailed exploration for
the on-set of the novel features. Comparative analysis of all available 200 GeV
data indicates that the system size is a major factor determining both the
magnitude of the hadron spectra suppression at large transverse momenta and the

Inclusive pi^0, eta, and direct photon production at high transverse momentum in p+p and d+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV
We report a measurement of high-p_T inclusive pi^0, eta, and direct photon
production in p+p and d+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV at midrapidity (0
gamma gamma were detected in the
Barrel Electromagnetic Calorimeter of the STAR experiment at the Relativistic
Heavy Ion Collider. The eta -> gamma gamma decay was also observed and
constituted the first eta measurement by STAR. The first direct photon cross
section measurement by STAR is also presented, the signal was extracted
statistically by subtracting the pi^0, eta, and omega(782) decay background
from the inclusive photon distribution observed in the calorimeter. The
analysis is described in detail, and the results are found to be in good
agreement with earlier measurements and with next-to-leading order perturbative

Strangelet search at RHIC
Two position sensitive Shower Maximum Detector (SMDs) for Zero-Degree
Calorimeters (ZDCs) were installed by STAR before run 2004 at both upstream and
downstream from the interaction point along the beam axis where particles with
small rigidity are swept away by strong magnetic field. The ZDC-SMDs provides
information about neutral energy deposition as a function of transverse
position in ZDCs. We report the preliminary results of strangelet search from a
triggered data-set sampling 100 million Au+Au collisions at top RHIC energy.Comment: Strange Quark Matter 2004 conference proceedin
Production of Pairs Accompanied by Nuclear Dissociation in Ultra-Peripheral Heavy Ion Collision
We present the first data on pair production accompanied by nuclear
breakup in ultra-peripheral gold-gold collisions at a center of mass energy of
200 GeV per nucleon pair. The nuclear breakup requirement selects events at
small impact parameters, where higher-order corrections to the pair production
cross section should be enhanced. We compare the pair kinematic distributions
with two calculations: one based on the equivalent photon approximation, and
the other using lowest-order quantum electrodynamics (QED); the latter includes
the photon virtuality. The cross section, pair mass, rapidity and angular
distributions are in good agreement with both calculations. The pair transverse
momentum, , spectrum agrees with the QED calculation, but not with the
equivalent photon approach. We set limits on higher-order contributions to the
cross section. The and spectra are similar, with no evidence
for interference effects due to higher-order diagrams.Comment: 6 pages with 3 figures Slightly modified version that will appear in

Studies of di-jet survival and surface emission bias in Au+Au collisions via angular correlations with respect to back-to-back leading hadrons
We report first results from an analysis based on a new multi-hadron
correlation technique, exploring jet-medium interactions and di-jet surface
emission bias at RHIC. Pairs of back-to-back high transverse momentum hadrons
are used for triggers to study associated hadron distributions. In contrast
with two- and three-particle correlations with a single trigger with similar
kinematic selections, the associated hadron distribution of both trigger sides
reveals no modification in either relative pseudo-rapidity or relative
azimuthal angle from d+Au to central Au+Au collisions. We determine associated
hadron yields and spectra as well as production rates for such correlated
back-to-back triggers to gain additional insights on medium properties.Comment: By the STAR Collaboration. 6 pages, 2 figure
Evidence from d+Au measurements for final-state suppression of high hadrons in Au+Au collisions at RHIC
We report measurements of single-particle inclusive spectra and two-particle
azimuthal distributions of charged hadrons at high transverse momentum (high
) in minimum bias and central d+Au collisions at =200 GeV.
The inclusive yield is enhanced in d+Au collisions relative to binary-scaled
p+p collisions, while the two-particle azimuthal distributions are very similar
to those observed in p+p collisions. These results demonstrate that the strong
suppression of the inclusive yield and back-to-back correlations at high
previously observed in central Au+Au collisions are due to final-state
