    Chaplain care in pediatric oncology: Insight for interprofessional collaboration

    Background Although attending to spiritual and religious needs is part of high quality care of pediatric cancer patients, oncology clinicians may not understand the role of the chaplain, resulting in underutilization of resources and failure to fully integrate the chaplain into the clinical team. We provide a description of what the chaplain does in the care of pediatric oncology patients. Methods We conducted a qualitative content analysis of chaplain chart notes over a one‐year period on the pediatric oncology service at a freestanding children's hospital. Using criteria designed to capture multiple potential factors in chaplain referral, we selected 30 patients for thematic analysis. Results In 2016, 166 pediatric patients were diagnosed with cancer and received ongoing care at our institution. From the 30 patients selected, 230 chaplain encounters were documented in the medical chart. Three major themes emerged. (1) The chaplains provided a rich description of spiritual and psychosocial aspects of the patient and family's experience; (2) chaplains provided diverse interventions, both religious and secular in nature; and (3) chaplains provided care within a longitudinal relationship. All three themes depend on the empathic listening by a chaplain. Conclusions The chaplains’ observations about patient and family beliefs, experiences, and emotional/spiritual states have the potential to inform the interdisciplinary care of the patient. Chaplain documentation provides insight into how spiritual care interventions and close relationships may promote patient and family well‐being. In future work, we will explore how to give voice to their insights in caring for pediatric oncology patients

    Electrokinetic supercharging has been integrated in CZE for the development of a highly sensitive methodology for protein tryptic digest analysis. A careful choice of the experimental conditions led to sensitivity enhancement factors between 1000 and 10 000 whilst maintaining a satisfactory resolution. Peptides in the low nanomolar concentration range have been detected despite the use of the poorly sensitive UV absorbance detection mode. The buffer system used in this study is fully suitable for coupling CE to MS

    Variability in the durability of CRISPR-Cas immunity

The final version is available from Royal Society via the DOI in this record.The durability of host resistance is challenged by the ability of pathogens to escape the defence of their hosts. Understanding the variability in the durability of host resistance is of paramount importance for designing more effective control strategies against infectious diseases. Here, we study the durability of various clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats-Cas (CRISPR-Cas) alleles of the bacteria Streptococcus thermophilus against lytic phages. We found substantial variability in durability among different resistant bacteria. Since the escape of the phage is driven by a mutation in the phage sequence targeted by CRISPR-Cas, we explored the fitness costs associated with these escape mutations. We found that, on average, escape mutations decrease the fitness of the phage. Yet, the magnitude of this fitness cost does not predict the durability of CRISPR-Cas immunity. We contend that this variability in the durability of resistance may be because of variations in phage mutation rate or in the proportion of lethal mutations across the phage genome. These results have important implications on the coevolutionary dynamics between bacteria and phages and for the optimal deployment of resistance strategies against pathogens and pests. Understanding the durability of CRISPR-Cas immunity may also help develop more effective gene-drive strategies based on CRISPR-Cas9 technology.     Study of cancer risks associated with Lynch syndrome in the Liège region

    Lynch syndrome is a hereditary predisposition to several cancers. The goals of our study were to know the different mutations in our Lynch population, to evaluate the prevalence of cancers in this population and to determine the mean age of onset of those cancers. This retrospective study includes proven carriers of a MMR mutation diagnosed either by the CHU of Liège or either by the CHC Saint-Joseph in Liège, Belgium. We noted a clear majority of MSH2 mutations (50 %) in the Lynch families recorded in Liège, which is different from the main literature. In our study population (106 subjects), 65 % of subjects were affected by at least one cancer. Prevalences for colorectal and endometrial cancers are, respectively, 50 % and 27.5 %. We found no difference in the mean age of onset of cancers compared to literature. We discuss the follow-up of Lynch patients and the interest of additional exams such as hysteroscopy and cystoscopy. © 2019 Revue Medicale de Liege. All rights reserved
