    Restriction on the energy and luminosity of e+e- storage rings due to beamstrahlung

    The role of beamstrahlung in high-energy e+e- storage-ring colliders (SRCs) is examined. Particle loss due to the emission of single energetic beamstrahlung photons is shown to impose a fundamental limit on SRC luminosities at energies 2E_0 >~ 140 GeV for head-on collisions and 2E_0 >~ 40 GeV for crab-waist collisions. With beamstrahlung taken into account, we explore the viability of SRCs in the E_0=240-500 GeV range, which is of interest in the precision study of the Higgs boson. At 2E_0=240 GeV, SRCs are found to be competitive with linear colliders; however, at 2E_0=400-500 GeV, the attainable SRC luminosity would be a factor 15-25 smaller than desired.Comment: Latex, 5 pages. v2 differs only by minor changes is abstract and introduction, one reference is added. v3 corresponds to the paper published in PR

    Hybrid Software Development Approaches in Practice: A European Perspective

    Agile and traditional development approaches are used in combination in todays software development. To improve the understanding and to provide better guidance for selecting appropriate development approaches, it is important to analyze such combinations in practice. Results obtained from an online survey strongly confirm that hybrid development approaches are widely used in industry. Our results show that hybrid development approaches: (i) have become reality for nearly all companies; (ii) are applied to specific projects even in the presence of company-wide policies for process usage; (iii) are neither planned nor designed but emerge from the evolution of different work practices; and, (iv) are consistently used regardless of company size or industry secto

    Leaving Decline and Towards Growth: Discovering the Keys to Church Regeneration in South Wales

    This paper highlights the current spiritual climate of Christianity in Wales today, calling for urgent attention to certain deficits within the Church. Section one begins by examining the claims of secularists who believe that Christianity is in a terminal condition in Britain, and whether that is an accurate view. We then progress by looking for signs of new life in UK churches and what it actually means to be a healthy church. From there, we turn to the great commission Jesus Christ entrusted to His church prior to His ascension, and look at the relationship between growing healthy disciples of Christ, and the formation of healthy churches. In section two, we look further at the subject of growing healthy churches and disciples and whether growth models exist, past or present, that are suitable for stimulating church growth in Wales. We examine three different growth systems, their strengths and weaknesses, and consider whether any of these can be used to address the needs of the Church in Wales. Section three shifts to an examination of the Welsh context, both spiritually and economically, and proposes an appropriate solution designed to address both the discipleship and leadership needs of churches in Wales. We also look at the marks of a healthy, growing church in light of the author’s proposed solution. Finally, sections five and six then move to an examination of the artefact created by the author of this research paper, Disciple-makers: The Keys To Growth, and how that could begin to reverse the declining tide of Christianity and churches in Wales

    Cumulative energetic costs of military aircraft, recreational and natural disturbance in roosting shorebirds

    Knowing the consequences of disturbance for multiple species and all disturbance sources is crucial to mitigate disturbance impacts in densely populated areas. However, studies that observe the complete disturbance landscape to estimate cumulative costs of disturbance are scarce. Therefore, we quantified responses, frequencies and energetic costs of disturbance of four shorebird species on five high tide roosts in the Wadden Sea. Roosts were located either in a military air force training area or were predominantly affected by recreational disturbance. In the military training area, infrequent transport airplanes and bombing jets elicited the strongest responses, whereas regular, predictable activities of jet fighters and small civil airplanes elicited far smaller responses. Disturbance occurred more frequently at roosts near recreational than near military activities, as recreation was prohibited in the military area during operation days. On average, birds took flight due to military, recreational or natural disturbance (e.g. raptors) 0.20–1.27 times per hour. High tide disturbance increased daily energy expenditure by 0.1%–1.4%, of which 51% was due to anthropogenic disturbance in contrast to natural disturbance. Costs were low for curlews Numenius arquata, oystercatchers Haematopus ostralegus and gulls Larus spp, but higher – and potentially critical – for bar-tailed godwits Limosa lapponica as they were most susceptible to aircraft and raptors. Given that bar-tailed godwits have previously been found to be least susceptible to walker disturbances, our results suggest that interspecific differences in susceptibility depend on disturbance source type. In our study area, aircraft disturbance impacts can be reduced by avoiding jet fighter activities during periods when high water levels force birds closer to military targets and by limiting bombing and transport airplane exercises

    Effects of cutting and maturity on lycopene concentration of fresh-cut tomatoes during storage at different temperatures

    To investigate the changes in lycopene concentration of fresh-cut tomato during storage, tomato fruits at different stages of maturity were cut into 7 mm slices and stored at temperatures varying from 2°C to 16°C. To assess the effect of cutting, intact fruit were stored in an additional experiment at 5°C. Cutting did not change the accumulation of lycopene in fruit stored at 5°C, compared to intact fruit. The lycopene concentration of the tomato slices stored at different temperatures showed net increases of lycopene concentration for all maturity stages tested at temperatures of 8°C and higher. At lower temperatures no increases or small decreases were observed. The lycopene concentration was considered to be the net result of production and degradation of lycopene. Kinetic models for different pathways were tested. The reaction rate constant for lycopene formation at 8°C was estimated at 2.16 ± 0.24 ¿ 10-2 µg/mg.day. The estimated activation energy for the lycopene formation (92.4 ± 7.3 kJ/mol) indicates that this process is highly dependent on temperature. The degradation rate constant was estimated at 2.99 ± 0.61 ¿ 10-2 (1/day) and, over the temperature range studied, the degradation rate was not dependent on temperature

    The Compact Linear e+^+e^- Collider (CLIC): Accelerator and Detector

    The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a TeV-scale high-luminosity linear e+^+e^- collider under development by international collaborations hosted by CERN. This document provides an overview of the design, technology, and implementation aspects of the CLIC accelerator and the detector. For an optimal exploitation of its physics potential, CLIC is foreseen to be built and operated in stages, at centre-of-mass energies of 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV and 3 TeV, for a site length ranging between 11 km and 50 km. CLIC uses a two-beam acceleration scheme, in which normal-conducting high-gradient 12 GHz accelerating structures are powered via a high-current drive beam. For the first stage, an alternative with X-band klystron powering is also considered. CLIC accelerator optimisation, technical developments, and system tests have resulted in significant progress in recent years. Moreover, this has led to an increased energy efficiency and reduced power consumption of around 170 MW for the 380 GeV stage, together with a reduced cost estimate of approximately 6 billion CHF. The detector concept, which matches the physics performance requirements and the CLIC experimental conditions, has been refined using improved software tools for simulation and reconstruction. Significant progress has been made on detector technology developments for the tracking and calorimetry systems. The construction of the first CLIC energy stage could start as early as 2026 and first beams would be available by 2035, marking the beginning of a physics programme spanning 25-30 years and providing excellent sensitivity to Beyond Standard Model physics, through direct searches and via a broad set of precision measurements of Standard Model processes, particularly in the Higgs and top-quark sectors.Comment: Input to the European Particle Physics Strategy Update on behalf of the CLIC and CLICdp Collaboration
