Abstract Master’s thesis in Nordic Languages and Literature Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic Studies University of Bergen, spring 2020 Student: Jenny Øye Linnestad Tutor: Anna Bohlin Title: “Så mye av meg finnes i hodet” [“So much of me exists in my mind”] Subtitle: En analyse av psykisk sykdom, definisjonsmakt og subjektivitet i De gales hus, En dåre fri, Beckomberga og Jag vill inte dö, jag vill bara inte leva [An analysis of mental disorders, power to define, and subjectivity in De gales hus, En dåre fri, Beckomberga, and Jag vill inte dö, jag vill bara inte leva] In this master’s thesis I analyse the portrayal of mental disorders in fictional literature. The works investigated for this study are De gales hus (1999) by Karin Fossum, En dåre fri (2010) by Beate Grimsrud, Jag vill inte dö, jag vill bara inte leva (2008) by Ann Heberlein, and Beckomberga (2014) by Sara Stridsberg. Disability Studies and Foucauldian discourse analysis serve as the theoretical framework for the thesis. I analyse the problematisation of a medical discourse in the novels, and how the novels shape oppositions between the portrayal of medical discourse versus the subject’s own perception of their illness. Further, I close read the contrast between the protagonists’ perception of illness and the novels’ portrayal of a medical discourse, and I argue for the ability of fictional literature to challenge society’s power to define in cases of mental illness. Through Foucaults term heterotopia I have found that the protagonists express a view of healthcare institutions as something other, a parallel society in contrast with majority society. The portrayals of institutions, as well as the definitions of diagnoses, of the medical discourse in the novels come across as categorical and limiting indicators of illnesses. Building on this, I have found that the protagonists take alternative positions of statement, from which the novels function as subject producing. The protagonists reveal alternative experiences of illnesses through use of metaphor, intertextuality, historical events, names, and elements of metapoetry. Through devices such as the characters’ counter discourse, alternating focalisation in the novels, and what I have dubbed skjønnlitterær diskurs – prose literary discourse – the medical discourse’s limitations as regards ability to describe is shown.

A fatty-acid-binding protein from wheat kernels

    Get PDF
A protein of about 7 kDa (W-FABP) has been isolated from mature wheat kernels by H2O extraction and gel filtration of the extract, followed by two steps of high-performance liquid chromatography. The N-terminal amino acid sequence has been determined up to the 28th residue and found to be identical (except for positions 4 and 5) to that deduced from a barley cDNA (EMBL X15257), which had been improperly classified as a non-specific lipid transfer protein (LTP2). Similarly with LTPs, W-FABP does bind fatty acids, but in contrast, it is not significantly homologous to LTPs, it is not recognized by LTP antibodies, it has a more acidic isoelectric point (pH 9.6), and it does not show antibiotic properties

Combined cognitive and vocational interventions after mild to moderate traumatic brain injury: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

Background A considerable proportion of patients with mild to moderate traumatic brain injury (TBI) experience long-lasting somatic, cognitive, and emotional symptoms that may hamper their capacity to return to work (RTW). Although several studies have described medical, psychological, and work-related factors that predict RTW after TBI, well-controlled intervention studies regarding RTW are scarce. Furthermore, there has traditionally been weak collaboration among health-related rehabilitation services, the labor and welfare sector, and workplaces. Methods/design This study protocol describes an innovative randomized controlled trial in which we will explore the effect of combining manualized cognitive rehabilitation (Compensatory Cognitive Training [CCT]) and supported employment (SE) on RTW and related outcomes for patients with mild to moderate TBI in real-life competitive work settings. The study will be carried out in the southeastern region of Norway and thereby be performed within the Norwegian welfare system. Patients aged 18–60 years with mild to moderate TBI who are employed in a minimum 50% position at the time of injury and sick-listed 50% or more for postconcussive symptoms 2 months postinjury will be included in the study. A comprehensive assessment of neurocognitive function, self-reported symptoms, emotional distress, coping style, and quality of life will be performed at baseline, immediately after CCT (3 months after inclusion), following the end of SE (6 months after inclusion), and 12 months following study inclusion. The primary outcome measures are the proportion of participants who have returned to work at 12-month follow-up and length of time until RTW, in addition to work stability as well as work productivity over the first year following the intervention. Secondary outcomes include changes in self-reported symptoms, emotional and cognitive function, and quality of life. Additionally, a qualitative RTW process evaluation focused on organizational challenges at the workplace will be performed. Discussion The proposed study will combine cognitive and vocational rehabilitation and explore the efficacy of increased cross-sectoral collaboration between specialized health care services and the labor and welfare system. If the intervention proves effective, the project will describe the cost-effectiveness and utility of the program and thereby provide important information for policy makers. In addition, knowledge about the RTW process for persons with TBI and their workplaces will be provided. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03092713. Registered on 10 March 2017

Experimentally constrained 165,166Ho(n,γ)^{165,166}\text{Ho}(n,\gamma) rates and implications for the ss process

The γ\gamma-ray strength function and the nuclear level density of 167^{167}Ho have been extracted using the Oslo method from a 164Dy(α,pγ)167^{164}\text{Dy}(\alpha,p\gamma)^{167}Ho experiment carried out at the Oslo Cyclotron Laboratory. The level density displays a shape that is compatible with %can be approximated with the constant temperature model in the quasicontinuum, while the strength function shows structures indicating the presence of both a scissors and a pygmy dipole resonance. Using our present results as well as data from a previous 163Dy(α,pγ)166^{163}\text{Dy}(\alpha,p\gamma)^{166}Ho experiment, the 165Ho(n,γ)^{165}\text{Ho}(n,\gamma) and 166Ho(n,γ)^{166}\text{Ho}(n,\gamma) MACS uncertainties have been constrained. The possible influence of the low-lying, long-lived 6~keV isomer 166^{166}Ho in the ss process is investigated in the context of a 2~MM_\odot, [Fe/H]=-0.5 AGB star. We show that the newly obtained 165Ho(n,γ)^{165}\text{Ho}(n,\gamma) MACS affects the final 165^{165}Ho abundance, while the 166Ho(n,γ)^{166}\text{Ho}(n,\gamma) MACS only impacts the enrichment of 166,167^{166,167}Er to a limited degree due to the relatively rapid β\beta decay of the thermalized 166^{166}Ho at typical ss-process temperatures.Comment: 11 pages, submitted to Physical Reviews
