    Formal Verification of Real-Time Function Blocks Using PVS

    A critical step towards certifying safety-critical systems is to check their conformance to hard real-time requirements. A promising way to achieve this is by building the systems from pre-verified components and verifying their correctness in a compositional manner. We previously reported a formal approach to verifying function blocks (FBs) using tabular expressions and the PVS proof assistant. By applying our approach to the IEC 61131-3 standard of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), we constructed a repository of precise specification and reusable (proven) theorems of feasibility and correctness for FBs. However, we previously did not apply our approach to verify FBs against timing requirements, since IEC 61131-3 does not define composite FBs built from timers. In this paper, based on our experience in the nuclear domain, we conduct two realistic case studies, consisting of the software requirements and the proposed FB implementations for two subsystems of an industrial control system. The implementations are built from IEC 61131-3 FBs, including the on-delay timer.     Cultivation of Artificial Algal Crust and Its Effect on Soil Improvement in Sandy Area

    Algae are the pioneer species of biological soil crusts. Cyanobacteria, microschwannophyta and pseudocladophyta can form fixed quicksand algae crusts on the surface of sand surface. Through artificial culture, soil crusts can be formed in a short time. The development and succession of algeal-sand crust promoted the enrichment of nutrients in the sand surface layer, and created conditions for the reproduction of micro-soil organisms and the colonization of herbaceous plants, thus promoting the desert ecosystem to enter a virtuous cycle. This chapter will focus on the cultivation process of artificial soil crust and its effect on soil improvement (soil organic matter and nitrogen) in sandy areas. In conclusion, the application of algal solution can rapidly form algal crusts, and according to the research results, the formation of algal crusts can significantly improve the chemical and biological properties of soil

    Particle Swarm Optimization with Double Learning Patterns

    Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is an effective tool in solving optimization problems. However, PSO usually suffers from the premature convergence due to the quick losing of the swarm diversity. In this paper, we first analyze the motion behavior of the swarm based on the probability characteristic of learning parameters. Then a PSO with double learning patterns (PSO-DLP) is developed, which employs the master swarm and the slave swarm with different learning patterns to achieve a trade-off between the convergence speed and the swarm diversity. The particles in the master swarm and the slave swarm are encouraged to explore search for keeping the swarm diversity and to learn from the global best particle for refining a promising solution, respectively. When the evolutionary states of two swarms interact, an interaction mechanism is enabled. This mechanism can help the slave swarm in jumping out of the local optima and improve the convergence precision of the master swarm. The proposed PSO-DLP is evaluated on 20 benchmark functions, including rotated multimodal and complex shifted problems. The simulation results and statistical analysis show that PSO-DLP obtains a promising performance and outperforms eight PSO variants

    Antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in global lakes:A review and meta-analysis

    Lakes are an important source of freshwater, containing nearly 90% of the liquid surface fresh water worldwide. Long retention times in lakes mean pollutants from discharges slowly circulate around the lakes and may lead to high ecological risk for ecosystem and human health. In recent decades, antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have been regarded as emerging pollutants. The occurrence and distribution of antibiotics and ARGs in global freshwater lakes are summarized to show the pollution level of antibiotics and ARGs and to identify some of the potential risks to ecosystem and human health. Fifty-seven antibiotics were reported at least once in the studied lakes. Our meta-analysis shows that sulfamethoxazole, sulfamerazine, sulfameter, tetracycline, oxytetracycline, erythromycin, and roxithromycin were found at high concentrations in both lake water and lake sediment. There is no significant difference in the concentration of sulfonamides in lake water from China and that from other countries worldwide; however, there was a significant difference in quinolones. Erythromycin had the lowest predicted hazardous concentration for 5% of the species (HC5) and the highest ecological risk in lakes. There was no significant difference in the concentration of sulfonamide resistance genes (sul1 and sul2) in lake water and river water. There is surprisingly limited research on the role of aquatic biota in propagation of ARGs in freshwater lakes. As an environment that is susceptible to cumulative build-up of pollutants, lakes provide an important environment to study the fate of antibiotics and transport of ARGs with a broad range of niches including bacterial community, aquatic plants and animals

    Investment Study on Christie’ Chinese 20th Century Art

    This thesis focuses on the blooming market of Chinese 20th Century Art. The study object is one category of Christie’s Auction house, Chinese 20th Century Art, before 2009. Eight artists’ auction results are selected to the dataset for the research. We find that the previous researches based on the collection of Western arts cannot explain the whole situation of Chinese 20th Century Art. It has speculative character as an invest option in global art market. And some factors would affect the price changing in the auction activities. The Capital Asset Pricing Model is applied to study the investment condition of Chinese 20th Century Art as a capital asset. The result we get from our dataset presents that Chinese 20th Century Art is with high risks and high returns, which is quite different from the previous studies based on Western Artworks. Regression analysis reveals that some factors do affect the rate of price changes. We find that young Chinese artists who born after 1950 achieve better sale results than older ones. Their artworks are always sold on high realized prices. In addition, the high price sale more often happened in the auction house of Hong Kong and the market of Chinese 20th Century Art is enlarging these years. The rate of price change is increasing by the sale year growing. The prices of the artworks are growing higher and higher recently. However, the findings above just explain parts of the price increasing. All the reasons for the price increasing are not clear in this thesis.

    Hierarchical Concept Learning by Fuzzy Semantic Cells

    Concept modeling and learning have been important research topics in artificial intelligence and knowledge discovery. This paper studies a hierarchical concept learning method that requires a small amount of data to achieve competitive performances. The method starts from a set of fuzzy prototypes called Fuzzy Semantic Cells (FSCs). As a result of FSC parameter optimization, it creates a hierarchical structure of data–prototype–concept. Experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in a classification problem. In particular, when faced with limited training data, our proposed method is comparable with traditional techniques in terms of robustness and generalization ability

    Effect of Hypoxia on Ldh-c Expression in Somatic Cells of Plateau Pika

    Sperm specific lactate dehydrogenases (LDH-C4) is a lactate dehydrogenase that catalyzes the conversion of pyruvate to lactate. In mammals, Ldh-c was originally thought to be expressed only in testes and spermatozoa. Plateau pika (Ochotona curzoniae), which belongs to the genus Ochotona of the Ochotonidea family, is a hypoxia-tolerant mammal living 3000–5000 m above sea level on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, an environment which is strongly hypoxic. Ldh-c is expressed not only in testes and sperm, but also in the somatic tissues of plateau pika. To reveal the effect of hypoxia on pika Ldh-c expression, we investigated the mRNA and protein level of Ldh-c as well as the biochemical index of anaerobic glycolysis in pika somatic tissues at the altitudes of 2200 m, 3200 m and 3900 m. Our results showed that mRNA and protein expression levels of Ldh-c in the tissues of pika’s heart, liver, brain and skeletal muscle were increased significantly from 2200 m to 3200 m, but had no difference from 3200 m to 3900 m; the activities of LDH and the contents of lactate showed no difference from 2200 m to 3200 m, but were increased significantly from 3200 m to 3900 m. Hypoxia up-regulated and maintained the expression levels of Ldh-c in the pika somatic cells. Under the hypoxia condition, plateau pikas increased anaerobic glycolysis in somatic cells by LDH-C4, and that may have reduced their dependence on oxygen and enhanced their adaptation to the hypoxic environment

    Investigating Intercity Rail Transit Scope with Social Economy Accessibility: Case Study of the Pearl River Delta Region in China

    Abstract In response to challenges caused by high gasoline prices, traffic congestion, and greenhouse gas emissions, smart internment on intercity rail transit infrastructures and service suggests a rekindling of many countries’ interest in offering a range of benefits over automobile travels. In order to check the suitability of the proposed intercity rail transit system with the local conditions in a region, models for relating the intercity rail transit scope and social economy factors have been developed with the datasets obtained in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region in Guangdong Province, China. In this paper, the accessibility-based approach is presented to explore the impact of the intercity rail transit system planning on the regional development. The impact of three typical accessibility variables, transportation, population, and economic accessibilities, are considered in the approach. The global rail transit scope planning models are developed by using the regression technique to correlate the lengths of 254 regional intercity rail transit systems in different countries in the world with social economy factors. Those models are used for estimating the intercity rail transit size for the PRD region. The modeled transit scopes are examined with spatial distributions of the defined three accessibilities at each node (or centroid center of a town) in a Geographic Information System environment. The developed method has been proven helpful to understanding the gap between transport supply and potential travel demand and the suitability of each node to alignment of each rail transit route through the PRD region case study

    Impact of perceptions of bus service performance on mode choice preference

    As transit service performance should be considered from the transit passengers’ perspectives, it is essential to determine passengers’ perceptions of service performance and to understand the role of these perceptions in travel decisions. As the bus market share has steadily declined, the aim of this study is to explore the impact of perceptions of bus service performance on mode choice preference to increase bus ridership. To achieve this research objective, an intention survey is conducted to obtain bus passengers’ attitudes. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis are used to measure passengers’ perceptions and to extract the main factors from the bus service attributes. Next, structural equation modeling is used to reveal how passengers’ perceptions vary by demographics and trip characteristics. Finally, multinomial logit modeling is used to explore the impact of perception factors on mode choice preference. The results of this study show that perceptions of the reliability and comfort of bus services have a more significant impact on passengers’ mode choice preference than perceptions of availability and safety do. The implications in terms of improving bus service reliability and comfort can increase bus ridership
