    Knowledge creation through diverse knowledge networks

    Inter-organizational knowledge networks have been considered vital for the knowledge economy, particularly for small and medium size enterprises in knowledge-based industries, since knowledge creation often happens within those networks. Hence an interesting question to explore is: how do knowledge networks serve to contribute to knowledge creation? Beyond the role of network structure, which has dominated the knowledge network literature, our research highlights the need for the consideration of other factors like knowledge content. First by reviewing the literature, we propose a hypothesis that predicts a positive association of content and knowledge creation. Then, focusing on patent co-authorship networks of the biotechnology industry in Victoria, this research used an explanatory multiple case study approach to test the formulated hypothesis. By introducing new emergent constructs, the results provide more insight on the positive association of knowledge content and knowledge creation.     The role of exploration/exploitation knowledge process in collaborative knowledge creation

    There is increasing research on knowledge networks as sources to acquire and access knowledge. While this literature mainly has focused on the contribution of network structure characteristics, existing reviews show that the current literature has produced seemingly contradictory results and a growing body of research highlights the need for contingency approaches. Based on a thorough literature review, this research focused on knowledge process as one of the contingencies; this has also been considered as a measure for the knowledge exploration process. Hence two hypotheses were formulated and tested by studying the patent co-authorship networks of biotechnology firms in Victoria, Australia. Using social network analysis and moderated multiple regressions, our research positively confirmed the relationship between knowledge processes and network structure. Also based on the interaction analysis, two interesting inter-relations are discussed. Finally the implications of the findings and the potential to contribute to understanding prior contradictory results are discussed

    We have studied some transport properties of cold atoms in an accelerated optical lattice in the presence of decohering effects due to spontaneous emission. One new feature added is the effect of an external AC drive. As a result we obtain a tunable diffusion coefficient and it's nonlinear enhancement with increasing drive amplitude.     The Next Generation Air Traffic Management system (NextGen) is a blueprint of the future National Airspace System. Supporting NextGen is a nation-wide Aviation Simulation Network (ASN), which allows integration of a variety of real-time simulations to facilitate development and validation of the NextGen software by simulating a wide range of operational scenarios. The ASN system is an environment, including both simulated and human-in-the-loop real-life components (pilots and air traffic controllers).Real Time Distributed Simulation (RTDS) developed at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, a suite of applications providing low and medium fidelity en-route simulation capabilities, is one of the simulations contributing to the ASN. To support the interconnectivity with the ASN, we designed and implemented a dedicated gateway acting as an intermediary, providing logic for two-way communication and transfer messages between RTDS and ASN and storage for the exchanged data. It has been necessary to develop and analyze safety/security requirements for the gateway software based on analysis of system assets, hazards, threats and attacks related to ultimate real-life future implementation. Due to the nature of the system, the focus was placed on communication security and the related safety of the impacted aircraft in the simulation scenario. To support development of safety/security requirements, a well-established fault tree analysis technique was used. This fault tree model-based analysis, supported by a commercial tool, was a foundation to propose mitigations assuring the gateway system safety and security

    Big data and analytics for educational information systems, despite having gained researchers’ attention, are still in their infancy and will take years to mature. Massive open online courses (MOOCs), which record learner-computer interactions, bring unprecedented opportunities to analyse learner activities at a very fine granularity, using very large datasets. To date, studies have focused mainly on dropout and completion rates. This study explores learning activities in MOOCs against their demographic indicators. In particular, pre-course survey data and online learner interaction data collected from two MOOCs, delivered by the University of Warwick, in 2015, 2016, and 2017, are used, to explore how learnerdemographic indicatorsmay influence learner activities. Recommendations for educational information system development and instructional design, especially when a course attracts a diverse group of learners, are provided
