From Sublimity to Ecopornography: Assessing The Bureau of Reclamation Art Collection

Beginning in 1968, during a period of growing environmental activism and concern in the United States, the Bureau of Reclamation commissioned paintings from artists willing to depict the “imaginative aspects of the Reclamation Program.” The result was a collection of paintings, drawings and etchings that often worked within the well known traditions of American exceptionalism and which was used to promote the Bureau’s activities. As such it is possible to view the collection not only as an example of the Bureau of Reclamation’s self-promotion and “issues management” public relations style, but also as an example of ecopornography, a concept which is further theorized in the paper

Normal mode splitting and mechanical effects of an optical lattice in a ring cavity

A novel regime of atom-cavity physics is explored, arising when large atom samples dispersively interact with high-finesse optical cavities. A stable far detuned optical lattice of several million rubidium atoms is formed inside an optical ring resonator by coupling equal amounts of laser light to each propagation direction of a longitudinal cavity mode. An adjacent longitudinal mode, detunedby about 3 GHz, is used to perform probe transmission spectroscopy of the system. The atom-cavity coupling for the lattice beams and the probe is dispersive and dissipation results only from the finite photon-storage time. The observation of two well-resolved normal modes demonstrates the regime of strong cooperative coupling. The details of the normal mode spectrum reveal mechanical effects associated with the retroaction of the probe upon the optical lattice.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

Labour market attachment among parents and self-rated health of their offspring:an intergenerational study

Background Unemployment influences the individual’s health, whether this effect passes through generations is less studied. The aim of this intergenerational study was to investigate whether parents’ labour market attachment (LMA) were associated with self-rated health (SRH) among adolescents using preceding labour market events. Methods The study was performed using questionnaire data from the Danish Future Occupation of Children and Adolescents cohort (the FOCA cohort) of 13 100 adolescents (mean age 15.8 years) and their accompanying parents identified through registers. Adolescents’ SRH was measured using one item from SF-36. Information on parents’ LMA was obtained from a national register, analyzed on a weekly basis in a 5-year period before the adolescents completed the questionnaire. An integration indicator was calculated from an initial sequence analysis to determine how well the parents were integrated in the labour market. The association between the adolescents’ SRH and parents’ LMA was examined by logistic regression and an extended sequence analysis stratified on adolescents’ SRH. Results Totally, 29.1% of the adolescents reported moderate SRH. The adjusted odds ratios (OR) of moderate SRH was higher among adolescents of parents with low labour market integration (OR: 1.5 95% CI: 1.3–1.6 for fathers and OR: 1.4 95% CI: 1.2–1.5 for mothers). Also, adolescents with moderate SRH had parents who were less integrated in the labour market and had more weeks on non-employment benefits compared with the adolescents, who reported high SRH. Antidotes to Humanism

Humanism, especially Christian humanism, has impeded environmental progress, a growing body of scholarship shows, but bioregionalism may offer an antidote. Often considered merely an economic and scientific sub-discipline of environmental studies, bioregionalism also contains an overlooked spiritual dimension that enhances it as a subject of scholarly study and as a personal pursuit. Juxtaposing poems by John Milton and Gerard Manley Hopkins, religious poets from England in the 17th and 19th centuries, I demonstrate first the historical humanist response to the nature-culture nexus and, second, the bioregional response to that same nexus. In addition I offer firsthand spiritual experiences vis-vis the environment, teaching experiences that demonstrate a bioregional ethos, and a survey of scholarship that demonstrates the primacy of place-based studies that are currently neglected in most college and university curricula

Oppdragsgiver: Randaberg kirkelige fellesrådAltertavlen i Randaberg kirke, datert 1628, ble behandlet ved Arkeologisk museum, Universitetet i Stavanger (UiS) i perioden januar 2020 til og med april 2021. I tillegg til behandling, omfattet arbeidet undersøkelse av epitafiets skade- og behandlingshistorikk og tilstand. Oppdragsgiver er Randaberg kirkelige fellesråd. Maleriet ble undersøkt og behandlet av konservatorstudent Kristina Lindholdt under veiledning av malerikonservator Hilde Smedstad Moore. I tillegg var malerikonservator Lise Chantrier Aasen involvert i behandlingen. Malerikonservator Hilde Smedstad Moore var ansvarlig for de- og remontering, pakking, inkludert forsikesikring1, og transport til og fra Stavanger som ble utført henholdsvis 05.09.2019 og 16.04.2021. Da altertavlen kom inn til behandling var den preget av områder med oppskallinger og løs maling. Midtmaleriet hadde mindre områder med oppbrutt maling, trolig etter fugleekskrementer. Hele altertavlen var dessuten støvete, i tillegg var toppmaleriet preget av en gulnet ferniss. Hovedfokuset i behandlingen var stabilisering av ustabile malingslag, disse ble konsolidert med Medium for Konsolidering. Overflaten ble våt-renset med saliva og etter-renset med avionisert vann. Skadene på midtmaleriet ble kittet med Modustuck og retusjert med Gamblin konserveringsfarger
