Improved head-controlled TV system produces high-quality remote image

    Get PDF
Manipulator operator uses an improved resolution tv camera/monitor positioning system to view the remote handling and processing of reactive, flammable, explosive, or contaminated materials. The pan and tilt motions of the camera and monitor are slaved to follow the corresponding motions of the operators head

    FORTRAN for the Maniac

    Get PDF
It is not the intent of this thesis to present the rules of FORTRAN; it is assumed that the reader is generally familiar with the principles of FORTRAN programming. Rather, this is an attempt to describe FORTRAN in relation to the compiler program it actually is -- a machine language program which translates FORTRAN statements to machine language instructions, the latter capable of being executed by the same computer. The FORTRAN statements will be interpreted in terms of the compiler program which performs the translation, and algorithms for these statements will be described

Robust autoresonant excitation in the plasma beat-wave accelerator: a theoretical study

A modified version of the Plasma Beat-Wave Accelerator scheme is introduced and analyzed, which is based on autoresonant phase-locking of the nonlinear Langmuir wave to the slowly chirped beat frequency of the driving lasers via adiabatic passage through resonance. This new scheme is designed to overcome some of the well-known limitations of previous approaches, namely relativistic detuning and nonlinear modulation or other non-uniformity or non-stationarity in the driven Langmuir wave amplitude, and sensitivity to frequency mismatch due to measurement uncertainties and density fluctuations and inhomogeneities

Inelastic scattering of light by a cold trapped atom: Effects of the quantum center-of-mass motion

    Get PDF
The light scattered by a cold trapped ion, which is in the stationary state of laser cooling, presents features due to the mechanical effects of atom-photon interaction. These features appear as additional peaks (sidebands) in the spectrum of resonance fluorescence. Among these sidebands the literature has discussed the Stokes and anti-Stokes components, namely the sidebands of the elastic peak. In this manuscript we show that the motion also gives rise to sidebands of the inelastic peaks. These are not always visible, but, as we show, can be measured in parameter regimes which are experimentally accessible.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
