    Remarks on Tax Issues

    Get PDF
I kept praying that by the time the program got to me, there would be something left to say. My experience is purely as a tax advisor and not as an advisor to a hospital health care provider. Therefore, I do not have quite the overlap that the other speakers have had. But I can tell you how the IRS operates in this area and I can give you perhaps some predictions and some things to look for. Now, these thoughts are entirely mine. I did call my former colleagues at the IRS to find out if they would tell me anything, and they are not about to let somebody like me give information of that nature to an audience like you. Any such breaking information will definitely come directly from members of the IRS and Treasury

Evaluation of a physical activity and nutrition program for older people

    Get PDF
The aim of the program was to develop, implement and evaluate a low cost, accessible, sustainable, replicable physical activity and nutrition program that would ultimately reduce chronic disease. The thesis demonstrates the importance of evaluation pre, during and post intervention. The program was successful, data from the intervention group improved in areas of physical activity, dietary behaviours, and anthropometric measures, in comparison to the control group participants

Aneurysmectomy with partial nephrectomy on a living donor renal allograft: a case report.

Vascular anomalies among living kidney donors are seldom encountered and their presence offers a complex opportunity for every transplant surgeon. Furthermore, there has been an increasing trend with the use of marginal or kidneys with pathology to address the shortage of organs. We report a rare case of a kidney allograft with a saccular aneurysm and renal cortical cysts for which an excision with primary repair and partial nephrectomy were done, respectively. The recipient was a 45-year-old female with lupus nephritis and significant comorbidities who had excellent recovery and outcome. With good surgical techniques, these types of grafts continue to provide acceptable outcome but safety of the donor should be of utmost importance

Sports foods and dietary supplements for optimal function and performance enhancement in track and field athletes

Numerous nutritional products are marketed with claims of optimizing athlete health and function and/or enhancing performance. Products that fall under the banner of “Sports Foods” or “Dietary Supplements,” may be used to support performance during training and competition or for enhancing aspects of training adaptation, recovery, immune function, and/or overall athlete health. Effective marketing campaigns and athlete endorsements may convince us that certain sports foods and supplements are fundamental in allowing athletes to reach their sporting goals. However, this approach is naive in understanding the true foundations of athlete success, such as the inherent genetic predisposition for athletic characteristics, the many hours of well-structured/periodized training, appropriate underlying nutrition, adequate sleep and recovery, and of course, good overall physical and mental health. Nevertheless, if these variables are all accounted for, there may be a role for sports foods and dietary supplements in an athlete’s training and competition routine, particularly within elite sport where marginal performance gains are pursued. The following review presents general considerations for track-and-field athletes using sports foods and dietary supplements to enhance performance, in addition to exploring the potential therapeutic/prophylactic use of these nutritional aids

Music Collections in American Public Libraries

This article presents a broad survey of music collections in public libraries in the United States. Characteristics common to the majority of American public libraries are discussed, including origin, funding, and mission as an educational institution. Using a 1949 survey compiled by Otto Luening, Music Materials and the Public Library, as a basis for comparison, the authors surveyed seven libraries representing one or more of the following communities: small towns, school districts with nationally recognized music education programs, large cities, and locations associated recognizably American musical styles (e.g., New Orleans and jazz). The results this informal web survey demonstrate that certain features of American public library music collections have remained essentially the same since the time of Luening\u27s survey. Recordings still make up the majority of music collections, particularly in smaller cities, and there is still a lack of money to acquire materials and a shortage of qualified personnel to administer the collections. The decrease in arts education in American public schools has much to do with what public libraries are collecting with regard to music. There have been movements in the United States to increase awareness of the importance of music education, but none of these national groups has made formal connections to public libraries, nor have they addressed the important role that public libraries could play in this effort

    Transience

Lightness and darkness pervades much of my work which is visible in images of abandoned, secluded spaces. Light symbolizes hope and joy. It can also reference the spiritual connotation of new life as well as the end of life. The physical movement of light, its ephemeral quality, and its reflectivity is the deciding factor in my choice for using a camera without a lens and using traditional painting techniques. In my photographic mixed media work, I am drawn to the unique qualities of the pinhole camera, the exposure of light on the surface of film yields imagery that blurs the line between the familiar and the ethereal. Exposures from a pinhole camera materialize over time, perhaps seconds, perhaps minutes. There is no viewfinder to preview the image, which makes capturing an image pleasingly accidental. In my oil painting, I use photographic references and a limited palette. Much like my photographs, I create areas of light juxtaposed against deep shadow. The processes of using overlapping layers of transparent glazes over a warm-toned ground are used to achieve this chiaroscuro effect. By using these approaches, a sense of the dramatic is conveyed sometimes in contrast to the quiet nature of the subject
