Why Big Data? Towards a project assessment framework

Technological evolution and consequent increasing of society and organization information dependency was an important driver to escalation of data volume and variety. At same time, market evolution requires capability to find new paths to improve products/services, client satisfaction and to avoid cost increase associated with it. The relevance of using Big Data for different industries and knowing how to implement it, is something that raises many doubts and discussion. In a Big Data context it is important to evaluate organization needs and understanding if those needs are satisfied with Big Data capabilities, i.e., if they really need Big Data. For that reason, this paper presents a framework, namely BigDAF, capable of measuring a technological/business problem in a Big Data spectrum. This framework aims to help organizations and researchers to understand, not only the meaning of Big Data issue, but also the key factors that determines the necessity of a "Big Data investment". Adaptive admission control in real-time systems

In real-time service provisioning platforms the existence of an efficient and flexible admission control mechanism is essential for providing quality of service in a reliable and stable way, avoiding congestion scenarios caused by indiscriminate and uncontrolled service request admission. The capability of modeling and regulating the rate of call acceptance, and provide service differentiation allow indirect control of the load submitted to the platform. This paper presents a service differentiated admission control solution that allows to limit and modulate the rate by which service requests are submitted into a service provisioning platform. The solution is focused on providing a fair level of bandwidth sharing among service classes, in a configurable and dynamic way so that it can adapt the distribution by which service requests are served. To sustain the design decisions of our solution, major scheduling disciplines and rate control mechanisms, some of them proposed recently, are studied and compared. The solution was submitted to unit and charge tests, whose results show its effectiveness and robustness

The scientific performance of Portuguese pharmaceutical industry: a bibliometric analysis

The premise that leads to this investigation is that Portuguese pharmaceutical industry offers new solutions and brainpower. As this sector is usually linked to innovation and scientific progress as a way to increase competitiveness we believed that Portuguese pharmaceutical industry was more than a simple production facilities. This thesis main objective is to evaluate the scientific performance based on both qualitative and quantitative measures applying bibliometric methods. Using Scopus database, we restricted the scope of analysis to articles or reviews published in peer reviewed scientific journals in the period between 2000 and 2016. This search retrieved 435 documents, from which 94% were articles and the rest 6% reviews. We were able to define some patterns of publication among the 10 Portuguese companies considered. As expected, Bial is, by far, the company with more published articles or reviews (243), followed by Bluepharma with about one third of the documents (69 – from which 80% were published after 2011). Most of the collaborations were with national universities and most of the authors were also Portuguese enhancing the focus on national brain-power. In what concerns to quantity and quality, the total publication growth between 2008-2009, 2011- 2012 and 2014-2015 outstands among the rest of the years and the increasing quality of the journals used by Bluepharma and Hovione and the consequent growing of their citation impact should be hilighted.A premissa que leva a esta investigação é que a indústria farmacêutica portuguesa oferece novas soluções e capacidade intelectual. Estando este setor intimamente ligado à inovação e ao progresso científico como forma de aumentar a competitividade, acreditamos que a indústria farmacêutica portuguesa é mais do que simples instalações produtivas. O objetivo principal desta tese é avaliar o desempenho científico com base em medidas qualitativas e quantitativas aplicando métodos bibliométricos. Usando a base de dados Scopus, restringimos o espectro de análise a artigos ou revisões publicados em revistas científicas revistas por pares, no período compreendido entre 2000 e 2016, sendo apresentados 435 documentos, dos quais 94% eram artigos e as restantes revisões de 6%. Foi possível definir alguns padrões de publicação entre as 10 empresas portuguesas consideradas. Como esperado, a Bial é, de longe, a empresa com mais artigos ou revisões publicados (243), seguido da Bluepharma com cerca de um terço dos documentos (69 - dos quais 80% foram publicados depois de 2011). A maioria das colaborações encontradas foram com universidades nacionais e a maioria dos autores também eram portugueses realçando a aposta no capital intelectual nacional. No que diz respeito à quantidade e à qualidade, o crescimento total do número de publicações entre 2008-2009, 2011-2012 e 2014-2015 destaca-se entre o resto dos anos e a crescente qualidade das revistas utilizadas pela Bluepharma e Hovione e o consequente crescimento do número de citações por artigo deve também ser enaltecido

Big data for stock market by means of mining techniques

Predict and prevent future events are the major advantages to any company. Big Data comes up with huge power, not only by the ability of processes large amounts and variety of data at high velocity, but also by the capability to create value to organizations. This paper presents an approach to a Big Data based decision making in the stock market context. The correlation between news articles and stock variations it is already proved but it can be enriched with other indicators. In this use case they were collected news articles from three different web sites and the stock history from the New York Stock Exchange. In order to proceed to data mining classification algorithms the articles were labeled by their sentiment, the direct relation to a specific company and geographic market influence. With the proposed model it is possible identify the patterns between this indicators and predict stock price variations with accuracies of 100 percent. Moreover the model shown that the stock market could be sensitive to news with generic topics, such as government and society but they can also depend on the geographic cover

Ensinar a ensinar matemática: constituição e circulação de práticas em trajetórias profissionais de professores de estágio curricular supervisionado (UFMG, 1968-1994)

Examinamos, neste texto, as contribuições do estudo de trajetórias profissionais de professores universitários para a compreensão da constituição e circulação de práticas de ensinar a ensinar matemática. Para isso, apresentamos brevemente as práticas de ensinar a ensinar matemática como uma ferramenta conceitual e, como objetivo deste artigo, propomos realizar um exercício de análise a partir do estudo das confluências entre as trajetórias profissionais de docentes de disciplinas responsáveis pelo estágio curricular supervisionado no curso de Licenciatura em Matemática da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) e documentos ligados a essas disciplinas, como ementas e programas, no período de 1968 a 1994. Essa análise permite-nos considerar que os conteúdos, as metodologias e as avaliações dessas disciplinas acompanharam a modificação dos ideários e discursos pedagógicos no tempo, tendo fortes influências das trajetórias profissionais de seus professores, além de evidenciar como as disciplinas de estágio curricular supervisionado atuavam como um catalisador de questões ligadas ao ensino de Matemática, promovendo uma atualização dos ideários e discursos pedagógicos ligados à formação e à atuação de professores de matemática no curso de licenciatura

Melhoria do sistema de movimentação do transportador de cunha e posicionamento do tabuleiro de aplicação Apex

Ao longo dos anos, tem-se verificado uma enorme expansão da indústria de componentes para automóveis, acompanhada de uma forte inovação, assente também na evolução da automação e robótica. Neste sentido, garantir a qualidade dos componentes e de todo o processo produtivo é primordial para impulsionar a competitividade no sector, sendo que a qualidade é uma particularidade chave desta indústria, já que todos os fabricantes e fornecedores estão sujeitos a auditorias sistemáticas e à obrigatoriedade de conduzir processos de melhoria contínua, que resultem na permanente otimização dos processos. Este trabalho foi desenvolvido numa multinacional da indústria automóvel, nomeadamente no fabrico de um dos seus componentes, os pneus. Estes advêm de um processo produtivo complexo, desde a misturação, preparação, construção, vulcanização, até à inspeção, e estão fortemente motivados por processos de melhoria. Num destes departamentos (Preparação - Máquina Apex) foram encontrados problemas relacionados com um número elevado de avarias de sistemas pneumáticos e alguma dificuldade de os controlar, quer pela velocidade de trabalho, quer pelo posicionamento. A falta de automatização atrasava determinados processos, aumentando os tempos de preparação e acarretando maiores custos para a empresa. Com o objetivo de obter maior qualidade, fiabilidade e precisão, o trabalho desenvolvido consistiu em implementar sistemas servo-motorizados para o deslocamento linear do mecanismo e um enconder rotativo, com o objetivo de facilitar o conhecimento sobre o seu posicionamento. Ainda para assegurar que este local de trabalho fosse mais seguro e prático, foi aplicada a metodologia 5S e realizada uma melhoria de segurança no equipamento. Como conclusão, foram propostas diversas ações de melhoria para o aumento de eficiência do equipamento, algumas delas já implementadas com sucesso.Over the years, there has been a huge expansion regarding the automotive component’s industry and its consequent innovation that evolves together with automation and robotics. Therefore, to ensure the component’s quality as well as the quality of the whole production process, it is crucial to increase competitiveness in the sector. Since quality is a key feature of this industry, all manufacturers and suppliers are scrutinized by systematic audits in order to achieve constant improvements. This work was developed in a multinational industry, focusing on tires production for the automotive sector. Tires present a complex production process, which crosses the ixing, preparation, construction, vulcanization and inspection departments, all of them strongly predisposed to process improvement. In one of these departments (Preparation - Apex machines) problems related to a large number of failures in pneumatic systems were found, resulting in its difficult control, both in terms of speed and positioning. Some lacks of automation were delaying certain processes, increasing setup times and leading to higher production costs. In order to achieve higher quality, reliability and accuracy, a higher level of automation was applied to this kind of machines, allowing as well improve the workplace safety by the use of 5S methodology and promoting as well a safety upgrade on the equipment. As a conclusion, several improvements were proposed to increase the efficiency of the equipment, some of them already implemented successfully

Pela Isonomia de Direitos Trabalhistas entre o Imigrante Estrangeiro e o Trabalhador Nacional

This paper aims to demonstrate the importance of using a isonomic treatment to the stranger employee within the brazilian territory. The method used was the bibliographical research, and through a critical analysis it sought to demonstrate the needing of guaranteeing the treatment equality between the national and the stranger employees. For this it used like data source statutes that oversee the labor of the immigrant in the Brazilian territory. It expected that this research may serve like a support for a better comprehension of the problems that involve the immigrant in the Brazilian territory and then it can contribute for the appearance of new debates and studies around the necessity of the extension of the legal protection to the immigrant labor in Brazil.O presente artigo tem como objetivo demonstrar a importância de se dispensar um tratamento isonômico ao trabalhador estrangeiro dentro do território brasileiro. O método utilizado foi pesquisa bibliográfica, onde por meio de uma análise crítica buscou-se demonstrar a necessidade de se garantir a igualdade de tratamento entre os trabalhadores nacionais e os estrangeiros. Para tanto, utilizaram-se como fonte de dados normas jurídicas em vigor que tutelam o trabalho do imigrante estrangeiro no território brasileiro. Espera-se que esta pesquisa possa servir como suporte para melhor compreensão dos problemas que rondam o imigrante estrangeiro no território brasileiro e, assim, possa contribuir para o surgimento de novos debates e estudos em torno da necessidade de ampliação da proteção jurídica ao trabalho do imigrante no Brasil

Providing cost-effective QoS monitoring in multiservice networks

http://www.ngi2009.eu/In multiservice networks, QoS monitoring needs to be carried out in a per-class basis so that each service class measuring requirements and behavior are met and sensed properly. Facing the shortage of off-the-shelf class-based monitoring solutions, this work is focused on the development of a flexibly QoS monitoring tool oriented to multiservice networks. In this context, after discussing main QoS monitoring issues, we propose a flexible QoS monitoring Java application, totally user parameterized and supporting service differentiation. Benefiting from an edge-to-edge design perspective, this service-oriented tool is able to make a periodic evaluation of relevant QoS metrics for each service class, on an intra-domain or end-to-end path basis. Monitoring results, stored in a MySQL database, are useful to drive both online and offline traffic engineering and service management tasks

O jovem futebolista : uma proposta metodológica para o futebol de 11

Dissertação de mestrado em Ciências do Desporto (Treino Desportivo Para Crianças e Jovens) apresentada à Faculdade de Ciências do Desporto e Educação Física da Universidade de CoimbraPensar a formação desportiva de crianças e jovens é, indubitavelmente, uma tarefa bastante complexa. Atualmente, em muitos clubes, os modelos explicativos para os sistemas de treino e competição começam a sofrer cada vez maiores influências científicas. No entanto, apesar do reconhecimento da importância do desenvolvimento multidisciplinar sustentado para o jovem futebolista, ainda são muitas as instituições que baseiam todo este processo no conhecimento empírico – esgotado em si mesmo devido à ausência de um programa ou linha orientadora. Parece evidente que a evolução do jovem atleta depende das condições de prática proporcionada. Neste sentido, afigura-se pertinente refletir. O presente trabalho assenta nesta lógica, assumindo igual importância devido à sua vertente orientadora no que ao treino desportivo de crianças e jovens diz respeito. Com a partilha deste guia orientador pretende-se provocar pensamentos críticos, ouvir opiniões diversas e evitar aplicações inconscientes, por parte dos mais variados interessados pelo treino de crianças e jovens (treinadores, formadores, dirigentes).A realização de uma proposta metodológica, parte constituinte do trabalho, é sustentada por uma revisão de literatura extensiva. Neste capítulo são abordados temas como a caracterização de cada uma das etapas de formação desportiva a partir da fase de especialização – futebol de 11. Essa caracterização é baseada a partir da centralização do jovem futebolista em todo o processo de ensino aprendizagem e pressupõe a evolução para uma lógica coletiva multidimensional- razão pela qual foi idealizado um modelo de jogo para um clube e sugeridas propostas de periodização por escalão e tarefas de aprendizagens. ABSTRACT Thinking about sports training for children is undoubtedly a very complex task. Nowadays, in many teams, explanatory systems for training and competition models are starting to suffer increasing scientific influences. However, despite recognizing the importance of sustainable multidisciplinary development of young footballers – exhausted itself due to the absence of a program or guideline. It seems clear that the development of the young athlete depends on the conditions provided for practice of the sport. With this in mind, it is pertinent to reflect. This paper is based on this logic, assuming equal importance due to its guiding strand concerning the sports training of children. By sharing this guideline we intend to awaken the critical thinking, listening to diverse opinions and avoid unconscious applications be the various stakeholders on what concerns training children and young people (coaches, trainers, managers). The making of a methodological proposition, a constituent part of this paper, is supported by an extensive literature review. In this chapter we talk about topics such as the characterization of each of the sports training steps beginning in the specialization phase – 11 football. This characterization is based on the centralization of the young footballer in the whole process of teaching and learning and presupposes the evolution to a multidimensional collective logic – main reason that made conceiving a model of game to a team and suggested propositions of time lining by echelon and learning tasks
