Objectives: Cherubism is a congenital childhood disease of autosomal dominant inheritance. This disease is characterized by painless bilateral enlargement of the jaws, in which bone is replaced with fibrous tissue. The condition has sui generis clinical, radiographic and histological features, of which the clinician should be aware for a better differential diagnosis in the presence of a fibro-osseous lesion affecting the bones of the maxillomandibular complex. The purpose of present paper was to review the literature and to report the most important aspects of cherubism in order to facilitate the study of this disease.Material and Methods: Literature was reviewed about cherubism, emphasizing the relevant clinicoradiographic features and treatment. Literature was selected through a search of PubMed and Scielo electronic databases. The keywords used for search were adolescent, cherubism, cherubism/physiopathology, cherubism/treatment, cherubism/radiography. A manual search of the reference lists of the identified articles and the authors’ article files and recent reviews was conducted to identify additional publications. Those studies that described new features about cherubism were included in this review. Results: In total 44 literature sources were obtained and reviewed. Studies that described new features about cherubism physiopathology, diagnostics and treatment were reviewed. Conclusions: Despite the exceptions, cherubism is a clinically well-characterized disease. In cases of a suspicion of cherubism, radiographic examination is essential since the clinical presentation, the location and distribution of the lesions may define the diagnosis. Histopathological examination is complementary. Nowadays, genetic tests should be used for final diagnosis of cherubism

Due to the limitations of traditional periodontal therapies, and reported cold atmospheric plasma anti-inflammatory/antimicrobial activities, plasma could be an adjuvant therapy to periodontitis. Porphyromonas gingivalis was grown in blood agar. Standardized suspensions were plated on blood agar and plasma-treated for planktonic growth. For biofilm, dual-species Streptococcus gordonii + P. gingivalis biofilm grew for 48 h and then was plasma-treated. XTT assay and CFU counting were performed. Cytotoxicity was accessed immediately or after 24 h. Plasma was applied for 1, 3, 5 or 7 min. In vivo: Thirty C57BI/6 mice were subject to experimental periodontitis for 11 days. Immediately after ligature removal, animals were plasma-treated for 5 min once-Group P1 (n = 10); twice (Day 11 and 13)-Group P2 (n = 10); or not treated-Group S (n = 10). Mice were euthanized on day 15. Histological and microtomography analyses were performed. Significance level was 5%. Halo diameter increased proportionally to time of exposure contrary to CFU/mL counting. Mean/SD of fibroblasts viability did not vary among the groups. Plasma was able to inhibit P. gingivalis in planktonic culture and biofilm in a cell-safe manner. Moreover, plasma treatment in vivo, for 5 min, tends to improve periodontal tissue recovery, proportionally to the number of plasma applications

Thermomechanical surface instability at the origin of surface fissure patterns on heated circular MDF samples

When a flat sample of medium density fibreboard (MDF) is exposed to radiant heat in an inert atmosphere, primary crack patterns suddenly start to appear over the entire surface before pyrolysis and any charring occurs. Contrary to common belief that crack formation is due to drying and shrinkage, it was demonstrated for square samples that this results from thermomechanical instability. In the present paper, new experimental data are presented for circular samples of the same MDF material. The sample was exposed to radiant heating at 20 or 50 kW/m2, and completely different crack patterns with independent Eigenmodes were observed at the two heat fluxes. We show that the two patterns can be reproduced with a full 3-D thermomechanical surface instability model of a hot layer adhered to an elastic colder foundation in an axisymmetric domain. Analytical and numerical solutions of a simplified 2-D formulation of the same problem provide excellent qualitative agreement between observed and calculated patterns. Previous data for square samples together with the results reported in the present paper for circular samples confirm the validity of the model for qualitative predictions, and indicate that further refinements can be made to improve its quantitative predictive capability.Comment: 9 pages, 13 figures. Concluiu-se que a MAH apresentou biocompatibilidade, acelerando o processo de reparação das mucosites e que a laserterapia teve efeito antiinflamatório, principalmente nas fases iniciais da mucositeThe objective of this dissertation was to analise the effects of association between amniotic homogen membrane (AHM) and gallium-aluminum arsenide laser on 5-fluoruracil (5-FU) induced oral mucositis healing process in rats. 100 Wistar rats were divided in 5 groups (20 rats each group): control group, group 5-FU (treated with 5- fluoruracil), 5FU+AHM group (trated with 5-FU+AHM), Laser group (treated wuith 5-FU+laser) and 5-FU+MAH+Laser group (trated with 5FU+AHM+laser). Each group were subdivided in fourth according to sacrifice period (3, 7, 14 and 21 days), after mucositis induction. Histological slices were stained with hematoxilin-eosine for histomological analisis. For immunohistochemical and histomorfometric analisis, the indirect method with amplification system (Peroxidase, Biotin and Streptavidin) were used and glasses were incubated with anti-rat antibodies CD-4, CD-8, VEGF and PCNA and secondary antibody LSAB+Sys-HRP. Mayer Hematoxilin was used as couterstain and immunostained cells were counted on middle region of lamina propria, with 2.41 mm2 using Axiovision 4.7 Imaging System. Histomorfometry results were decribed and immunohistochemistry were analised with ANOVA one-way and Tukey test (GraphPad Prisma 5 for Windows, GraphPad Software, San Diego, Califórnia, USA). Significance level was p< 0.05. AHM presented biocompatibility acelerating mucositis healing process and lasertherapy had anti-inflamatory effect, specially on begining phases of healing processCoordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP

Background. Calcified thrombi are a common finding, especially in the pelvic veins. There are generally multiple thrombi, and they are generally associated with vascular malformations. Design. Herein we report a rare case of a single labial phlebolith, not associated with any other vascular lesion. We aim to alert clinicians to the possibility of the occurrence of vascular thrombi in the mouth and to describe the clinical and histological characteristics of such lesions in order to simplify the diagnosis and treatment. Furthermore, we have reviewed the English-language literature published since 1970 reporting oral (including masticatory muscles) phleboliths. Results. Twenty-nine cases of phleboliths have been reported in the literature since 1970. Only three of the reported phleboliths were solitary and not associated with other vascular lesions, as in the case presented here. Conclusion. Although phleboliths not associated with other vascular lesions are not common, clinicians should be aware of the existence of this pathology and include it as differential diagnosis of oral lesions
