The use of microalgae has been proeminent in agricultural scenario, because it is an alternative product considered extremelly productive, which contains essential elements for plants. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the morphophysiology of Punica granatum L. seedlings treated with Spirulina platensis and Scenedesmus sp. nanoparticles in controlled environment. The research was carried out at the of Federal University of Campina Grande, Pombal-PB, using a completely randomized design with five replications. The factorial scheme (2 x 4) was adopted, represented by two types of microalgae (Spirulina platensis; Scenedesmus sp.) and four doses of application (0, 5, 10 and 15%). Growth evaluations happened at 135 days after planting, verifying the number of leaves and branches and shoot length. The physiological parameters evaluated were gas exchanges, chlorophyll ‘a’ fluorescence, electron transport rate, stationary fluorescence, maximum fluorescence yield after light adaptation and quantum efficiency of PSII. Shoot length and number of branches had rises at doses of 6 and 15%. Number of leaves was induced in seedlings at dose of 8% with Spirulina platensis. Stomatal conductance and internal CO2 concentration increased in seedlings sprayed with Spirulina platensis. extract of Scenedesmus sp. improved the stationary fluorescence and quantum efficiency of PSII in pomegranate seedlings. The use of microalgae has been proeminent in agricultural scenario, because it is an alternative product considered extremelly productive, which contains essential elements for plants. Following a biomimetic approach, a series of amino-π-bridge-pyranoanthocyanin derivatives were employed as dye sensitizers in DSSCs. The dimethylamine group was selected to take advantage of its electron-donor character and the possibility of ‘dual-mode anchoring’ ([sbnd]OH vs. dimethylamino) to titanium dioxide. The increase in π-conjugation via insertion of C[dbnd]C bonds affected molecule flexibility, electron-donor ability and the pH-dependent equilibria of the pyranoanthocyanin derivatives. The current vs. potential properties of photoanodes using these dyes pointed to essential features of the relationship between power conversion efficiency and dye structure. These included the influences of the dimethylamine group, of π-conjugation and of substitution in ring B on the adsorption of the dyes to TiO2 and on the overall performance of the DSSCs prepared from them with and without added acid. An overall efficiency of 2.55% was obtained for the best performing compound, 4-(dimethylamino)-cinnamyl-pyranocyanidin-3-O-glucoside (JO3), which consolidates the importance of this family of compounds as potential dye-sensitizers for DSSC applications.authorsversionpublishe

Kidney involvement appears to be frequent in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Despite this, information concerning renal involvement in COVID-19 is still scarce. Several mechanisms appear to be involved in the complex relationship between the virus and the kidney. Also, different morphological patterns have been described in the kidneys of patients with COVID-19. For some authors, however, this association may be just a coincidence. To investigate this issue, we propose assessing renal morphology associated with COVID-19 at the renal pathology reference center of federal university hospitals in Brazil. Data will come from a consortium involving 17 federal university hospitals belonging to Empresa Brasileira de Serviços Hospitalares (EBSERH) network, as well as some state hospitals and an autopsy center. All biopsies will be sent to the referral center for renal pathology of the EBSERH network. The data will include patients who had coronavirus disease, both alive and deceased, with or without pre-existing kidney disease. Kidney biopsies will be analyzed by light, fluorescence, and electron microscopy. Furthermore, immunohistochemical (IHC) staining for various inflammatory cells (i.e., cells expressing CD3, CD20, CD4, CD8, CD138, CD68, and CD57) as well as angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) will be performed on paraffinized tissue sections. In addition to ultrastructural assays, in situ hybridization (ISH), IHC and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) will be used to detect Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) in renal tissue. For the patients diagnosed with Collapsing Glomerulopathy, peripheral blood will be collected for apolipoprotein L-1 (APOL1) genotyping. For patients with thrombotic microangiopathy, thrombospondin type 1 motif, member 13 (ADAMTS13), antiphospholipid, and complement panel will be performed. The setting of this study is Brazil, which is second behind the United States in highest confirmed cases and deaths. With this complete approach, we hope to help define the spectrum and impact, whether immediate or long-term, of kidney injury caused by SARS-CoV-2

    Get PDF
Smoking is the leading cause of respiratory disease (RD). The harmful effects of smoking on the respiratory system begin in utero and influence immune responses throughout childhood and adult life. In comparison with “healthy” smokers, smokers with RD have peculiarities that can impede smoking cessation, such as a higher level of nicotine dependence; nicotine withdrawal; higher levels of exhaled carbon monoxide; low motivation and low self-efficacy; greater concern about weight gain; and a high prevalence of anxiety and depression. In addition, they require more intensive, prolonged treatment. It is always necessary to educate such individuals about the fact that quitting smoking is the only measure that will reduce the progression of RD and improve their quality of life, regardless of the duration and severity of the disease. Physicians should always offer smoking cessation treatment. Outpatient or inpatient smoking cessation treatment should be multidisciplinary, based on behavioral interventions and pharmacotherapy. It will thus be more effective and cost-effective, doubling the chances of success
