Tracking in a space variant active vision system
Without the ability to foveate on and maintain foveation, active vision for applications such as surveillance, object recognition and object tracking are difficult to build. Although foveation in cartesian coordinates is being actively pursued by many, multi-resolution high accuracy foveation in log polar space has not been given much attention. This paper addresses the use of foveation to track a single object as well as multiple objects for a simulated space variant active vision system. Complex logarithmic mapping is chosen firstly because it provides high resolution and wide angle viewing. Secondly, the spatially variant structure of log polar space leads to an object increasing in size as it moves towards the fovea. This is important as we know which object is closer to the fovea at any instant in time.<br /
Underlying modal data issues for detecting damage in truss structures
Independent of the modal identification techniques employed for damage detection, use of measured modal data limits the expectations for damage location. These limitations are examined using the distribution of modal strain energy and the sensitivity of the frequency and mode shapes to structural stiffness changes. For given measured modal information of specific accuracy, this examination reveals the following: (1) damage detection is feasible for members that contribute significantly to the strain energy of the measured modes, (2) the modes which are most effective in detecting damage to certain critical members can be identified, and (3) a relationship can be drawn between the accuracy of the measured modes and frequencies and damage detection feasibility
On the micro mechanics of one-dimensional normal compression
Discrete-element modelling has been used to investigate the micro mechanics of one-dimensional compression. One-dimensional compression is modelled in three dimensions using an oedometer and a large number of particles, and without the use of agglomerates. The fracture of a particle is governed by the octahedral shear stress within the particle due to the multiple contacts and a Weibull distribution of strengths. Different fracture mechanisms are considered, and the influence of the distribution of fragments produced for each fracture on the global particle size distribution and the slope of the normal compression line is investigated. Using the discrete-element method, compression is related to the evolution of a fractal distribution of particles. The compression index is found to be solely a function of the strengths of the particles as a function of size
Measurement of Spin Polarization by Andreev Reflection in Ferromagnetic In1-xMnxSb Epilayers
We carried out Point Contact Andreev Reflection (PCAR) spin spectroscopy
measurements on epitaxially-grown ferromagnetic In1-xMnxSb epilayers with a
Curie temperature of ~9K. The spin sensitivity of PCAR in this material was
demonstrated by parallel control studies on its non-magnetic analog,
In1-yBeySb. We found the conductance curves of the Sn point contacts with
In1-yBeySb to be fairly conventional, with the possible presence of
proximity-induced superconductivity effects at the lowest temperatures. The
experimental Z-values of interfacial scattering agreed well with the estimates
based on the Fermi velocity mismatch between the semiconductor and the
superconductor. These measurements provided control data for subsequent PCAR
measurements on ferromagnetic In1-xMnxSb, which indicated spin polarization in
In1-xMnxSb to be 52 +- 3%
Entanglement and statistics in Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometry
Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometry allows one to detect the presence of
entanglement in two-photon input states. The same result holds for
two-particles input states which obey to Fermionic statistics. In the latter
case however anti-bouncing introduces qualitative differences in the
interferometer response. This effect is analyzed in a Gedankenexperiment where
the particles entering the interferometer are assumed to belong to a
one-parameter family of quons which continuously interpolate between the
Bosonic and Fermionic statistics.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures; minor editorial changes and new references adde
