    Exact simulation of a truncated Lévy subordinator

    A truncated Lévy subordinator is a Lévy subordinator in R+ with Lévy measure restricted from above by a certain level b. In this article, we study the path and distribution properties of this type of process in detail and set up an exact simulation framework based on a marked renewal process. In particular, we focus on a typical specification of truncated Lévy subordinator, namely the truncated stable process. We establish an exact simulation algorithm for the truncated stable process, which is very accurate and efficient. Compared to the existing algorithm suggested in Chi, our algorithm outperforms over all parameter settings. Using the distributional decomposition technique, we also develop an exact simulation algorithm for the truncated tempered stable process and other related processes. We illustrate an application of our algorithm as a valuation tool for stochastic hyperbolic discounting, and numerical analysis is provided to demonstrate the accuracy and effectiveness of our methods. We also show that variations of the result can also be used to sample two-sided truncated Lévy processes, two-sided Lévy processes via subordinating Brownian motions, and truncated Lévy-driven Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes

    Planococcus versutus sp. nov., isolated from soil

    A taxonomic study was performed on a novel Gram-stain-positive, coccus-shaped, orange-pigmented motile bacterium, designated as strain L10.15T. The organism was isolated from a soil sample collected in Lagoon Island (close to Adelaide Island, western Antarctic Peninsula) using a quorum-quenching enrichment medium. Growth occurred at 4–30 °C, pH 6–11 and at moderately high salinity (0–15 %, w/v, NaCl), with optimal growth at 26 °C, at pH 7–8 and with 6 % (w/v) NaCl. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain L10.15T belonged to the genus Planococcus and was closely related to Planococcus halocryophilus Or1T (99.3 % similarity), Planococcus donghaensis JH1T (99.0 %), Planococcus antarcticus DSM 14505T (98.3 %), Planococcus plakortidis AS/ASP6 (II)T (97.6 %), Planococcus maritimus TF-9T (97.5 %), Planococcus salinarum ISL-6T (97.5 %) and Planococcus kocurii NCIMB 629T (97.5 %). However, the average nucleotide identity-MUMmer analysis showed low genomic relatedness values of 71.1–81.7 % to the type strains of these closely related species of the genus Planococcus . The principal fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, C16 : 1ω7c and anteiso-C17 :  0, and the major menaquinones of strain L10.15T were MK-5 (48 %), MK-6 (6 %) and MK-7 (44 %). Polar lipid analysis revealed the presence of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and aminophospholipid. The DNA G+C content was 39.4 mol%. The phenotypic and genotypic data indicate that strain L10.15T represents a novel species of the genus Planococcus , for which the name Planococcus versutus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is L10.15T (=DSM 101994T=KACC 18918T)

    Preliminary Findings of the High Quantity of Microplastics in Faeces of Hong Kong Residents

    Microplastics are recognised as a ubiquitous and hazardous pollutant worldwide. These small-sized particles have been detected in human faeces collected from a number of cities, providing evidence of human ingestion of microplastics and their presence in the gastrointestinal tract. Here, using Raman spectroscopy, we identified an average of 50 particles g−1 (20.4–138.9 particles g−1 wet weight) in faeces collected from a healthy cohort in Hong Kong. This quantity was about five times higher than the values reported in other places in Asia and Europe. Polystyrene was the most abundant polymer type found in the faeces, followed by polypropylene and polyethylene. These particles were primarily fragments, but about two-thirds of the detected polyethylene terephthalate were fibres. More than 88% of the microplastics were smaller than 300 µm in size. Our study provides the first data on the faecal level, and thus the extent of ingestion, of microplastics in Hong Kong’s population. This timely assessment is crucial and supports the recently estimated ingestion rate of microplastics by Hong Kong residents through seafood consumption, which is one of the highest worldwide. These findings may be applicable to other coastal populations in South China with similar eating habits

    Exact simulation of generalised Vervaat perpetuities

    We consider a generalised Vervaat perpetuity of the form X = Y 1 W 1 +Y 2 W 1 W 2 + · · ·, where and (Y i) i≥0 is an independent and identically distributed sequence of random variables independent from (W i) i≥0. Based on a distributional decomposition technique, we propose a novel method for exactly simulating the generalised Vervaat perpetuity. The general framework relies on the exact simulation of the truncated gamma process, which we develop using a marked renewal representation for its paths. Furthermore, a special case arises when Y i = 1, and X has the generalised Dickman distribution, for which we present an exact simulation algorithm using the marked renewal approach. In particular, this new algorithm is much faster than existing algorithms illustrated in Chi (2012), Cloud and Huber (2017), Devroye and Fawzi (2010), and Fill and Huber (2010), as well as being applicable to the general payments case. Examples and numerical analysis are provided to demonstrate the accuracy and effectiveness of our method

    Effective strengthening of RC beams using bamboo-fibre-reinforced polymer: A finite-element analysis

    This paper presents a finite-element model of the structural behaviour of reinforced concrete (RC) beams with and without openings externally strengthened with bamboo-fibre-reinforced composite (BFRC) plates. The simulation was performed using ABAQUS Unified FEA 2021HF8 software. The stress–strain relationship of the RC was modelled using a model code for concrete structures, whereas the concrete-damaged plasticity model was used to simulate concrete damage. The predicted crack pattern of the beams was comparable to that from experimental observations. The ultimate load-bearing capacity of RC beams in flexure was predicted with an error of up to 1.50%, while the ultimate load-bearing capacity of RC beams with openings in shear was predicted with an error ranging from 1.89 to 13.43%. The most successful arrangement for strengthening a beam with openings in the shear zone was to place BFRC plates perpendicular to the crack on both sides of the beam’s surface, which increased the beam’s original load-bearing capacity by 110.06% compared to that of the control beam (CB). The most effective method for strengthening RC beams in flexure is to attach a BFRC plate to the entire bottom soffit of the RC beam. This maximises the ultimate load-bearing capacity at the expense of the beam’s ductility

    Standing Enokitake-like Nanowire Films for Highly Stretchable Elastronics

    Stretchable electronics may enable electronic components to be part of our organs-ideal for future wearable/implantable biodiagnostic systems. One of key challenges is failure of the soft/rigid material interface due to mismatching Young’ s moduli, which limits stretchability and durability of current systems. Here, we show that standing enokitake-like gold-nanowire-based films chemically bonded to an elastomer can be stretched up to 900% and are highly durable, with >93% conductivity recovery even after 2000 stretching/releasing cycles to 800% strain. Both experimental and modeling reveal that this superior elastic property originates from standing enokitake-like nanowire film structures. The closely packed nanoparticle layer sticks to the top of the nanowires, which easily cracks under strain, whereas the bottom part of the nanowires is compliant with substrate deformation. This leads to tiny V-shaped cracks with a maintained electron transport pathway rather than large U-shaped cracks that are frequently observed for conventional metal films. We further show that our standing nanowire films can serve as current collectors in supercapacitors and second skin-like smart masks for facial expression detection

    Predictors of motivation for type 2 diabetes mellitus self management of patients in primary care in Singapore

    Background: Diabetes is among the top 10 causes of death in Singapore, which has the second-highest proportion of diabetics among all developed nations. Diabetic patients’ self-management is often driven by their perceptions about their own chronic condition. This study explored specific aspects of patients’ (1) cognitive appraisal, (2) emotional distress and (3) a motivational measure in relation to their diabetic condition and attitude toward self-management. Methods: Seventy adult participants (41 female and 29 male) with type-2 diabetes were recruited in this cross-sectional study from patients who sought psychological consultation at polyclinics. The questionnaires administered were (1) Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire, (2) Diabetes Distress Scale, (3) Generalised Anxiety Disorder-7, (4) Insomnia Severity Index, (5) Patient Health Questionnaire-9, (6) Readiness-to-Change Ruler and (7) Sheehan Disability Scale. Results: Multiple regression analysis showed that severity of insomnia symptoms (β = -.26 , p < .05), emotional distress of diabetes (β = -.48 , p < .05), interpersonal distress of diabetes (β = -.35 , p < .05), total distress of diabetes (β = .58 , p < .05), and perception of personal control over diabetes (β = .-.30, p < .05) were significantly associated with reported motivation for engaging in diabetes self-management (R2 = .26, F(5, 62) = 4.26, p < 0.01). Conclusion: Insomnia, emotional distress and perception of personal control over diabetes significantly predicted patients’ reported motivation for diabetes self-management. It may be more productive for clinicians to focus their interventions on these particular aspects of diabetic patients’ experience in promoting self-management behaviour. Future studies may involve (1) the measurement of actual self-management behaviour beyond participants’ report of their motivation to engage in such desirable behavior and (2) qualitative approaches for understanding subjective dimensions of “insomnia,” “distress” and “personal control” in relation to diabetes self-management
