    Über die Bedeutung der ökonomischen Bildung

    In diesem Beitrag wird die Bedeutung der Ökonomischen Bildung im Kontext einer allgemeinen Bildung diskutiert. Hierzu wird zunächst der Frage nachgegangen, was unter Ökonomischer Bildung zu verstehen ist. In diesem Kontext wird das Problem der wirtschaftsdidaktischen Differenz betrachtet. Anschließend wird die grundsätzliche Bedeutung der Ökonomischen Bildung für die Allgemeinbildung herausgearbeitet. Darüber hinaus werden Probleme in der Anerkennung der Notwendigkeit und Probleme bei der Umsetzung Ökonomischer Bildung an allgemein bildenden Schulen diskutiert. Schließlich werden Konsequenzen und Forderungen für die Zukunft aufgezeigt

    Controlled Ecological Life Support Systems (CELSS) physiochemical waste management systems evaluation

    Parametric data for six waste management subsystems considered for use on the Space Station are compared, i.e.: (1) dry incineration; (2) wet oxidation; (3) supercritical water oxidation; (4) vapor compression distillation; (5) thermoelectric integrated membrane evaporation system; and (6) vapor phase catalytic ammonia removal. The parameters selected for comparison are on-orbit weight and volume, resupply and return to Earth logistics, power consumption, and heat rejection. Trades studies are performed on subsystem parameters derived from the most recent literature. The Boeing Engineering Trade Study (BETS), an environmental control and life support system (ECLSS) trade study computer program developed by Boeing Aerospace Company, is used to properly size the subsystems under study. The six waste treatment subsystems modeled in this program are sized to process the wastes for a 90-day Space Station mission with an 8-person crew, and an emergency supply period of 28 days. The resulting subsystem parameters are compared not only on an individual subsystem level but also as part of an integrated ECLSS

    Blended Learning als Katalysator fĂĽr Gender Mainstreaming

    In diesem Beitrag wird die Querschnittsperspektive des Gender Mainstreaming auf das computergestützte Lernkonzept „Blended Learning“ angewandt. Zunächst wird der Frage nachgegangen, was unter Gender Mainstreaming zu verstehen ist und welche Differenzen zwischen weiblichen und männlichen Verhaltensweisen bestehen. In diesem Kontext wird die unterschiedliche Herangehensweise von Frauen und Männern in Bezug auf Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien erörtert. In einem zweiten Schritt wird die grundsätzliche Bedeutung computergestützter Lernumgebungen betrachtet und das Konzept des Blended Learning vorgestellt. Schließlich werden die Merkmale des Blended Learning den Anforderungen des Gender Mainstreaming gegenübergestellt, um die besondere Eignung dieses hybriden Lernarrangements für frauenbezogene Qualifizierungsmaßnahmen herauszustellen

    Deformation twins as a probe for tribologically induced stress states

    Friction and wear of metals are critically influenced by the microstructures of the bodies constituting the tribological contact. Understanding the microstructural evolution taking place over the lifetime of a tribological system therefore is crucial for strategically designing tribological systems with tailored friction and wear properties. Here, we focus on single-crystalline CoCrFeMnNi that is prone to form twins at room temperature. Deformation twins feature a pronounced orientation dependence with a tension-compression anisotropy, a distinct strain release in an extended volume and robust onset stresses. This makes deformation twinning an ideal probe to experimentally investigate the complex stress fields occurring in a tribological contact. Our results clearly show a grain orientation dependence of twinning under tribological load. Unexpectedly, neither the crystal direction parallel to the sliding nor the normal direction are solely decisive for twinning. This experimental approach is ideal to experimentally validate tribological stress field models, as is demonstrates here

    Identification of 2,4-Dinitro-Biphenyl-Based Compounds as MAPEG Inhibitors

    We identified 2,4-dinitro-biphenyl-based compounds as new inhibitors of leukotriene C-4 synthase (LTC4S) and 5-lipoxygenase-activating protein (FLAP), both members of the "Membrane Associated Proteins in Eicosanoid and Glutathione metabolism" (MAPEG) family involved in the biosynthesis of pro-inflammatory eicosanoids. By molecular docking we evaluated the putative binding against the targets of interest, and by applying cell-free and cell-based assays we assessed the inhibition of LTC4S and FLAP by the small molecules at low micromolar concentrations. The present results integrate the previously observed inhibitory profile of the tested compounds against another MAPEG member, i. e., microsomal prostaglandin E-2 synthase (mPGES)-1, suggesting that the 2,4-dinitro-biphenyl scaffold is a suitable molecular platform for a multitargeting approach to modulate pro-inflammatory mediators in inflammation and cancer treatment

    Changes in salivary estradiol predict changes in women’s preferences for vocal masculinity

    Although many studies have reported that women’s preferences for masculine physical characteristics in men change systematically during the menstrual cycle, the hormonal mechanisms underpinning these changes are currently poorly understood. Previous studies investigating the relationships between measured hormone levels and women’s masculinity preferences tested only judgments of men’s facial attractiveness. Results of these studies suggested that preferences for masculine characteristics in men’s faces were related to either women’s estradiol or testosterone levels. To investigate the hormonal correlates of within-woman variation in masculinity preferences further, here we measured 62 women’s salivary estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone levels and their preferences for masculine characteristics in men’s voices in five weekly test sessions. Multilevel modeling of these data showed that changes in salivary estradiol were the best predictor of changes in women’s preferences for vocal masculinity. These results complement other recent research implicating estradiol in women’s mate preferences, attention to courtship signals, sexual motivation, and sexual strategies, and are the first to link women’s voice preferences directly to measured hormone levels

    BRP-187: A potent inhibitor of leukotriene biosynthesis that acts through impeding the dynamic 5-lipoxygenase/5-lipoxygenase-activating protein (FLAP) complex assembly

    The pro-inflammatory leukotrienes (LTs) are formed from arachidonic acid (AA) in activated leukocytes, where 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) translocates to the nuclear envelope to assemble a functional complex with the integral nuclear membrane protein 5-LO-activating protein (FLAP). FLAP, a MAPEG family member, facilitates AA transfer to 5-LO for efficient conversion, and LT biosynthesis critically depends on FLAP. Here we show that the novel LT biosynthesis inhibitor BRP-187 prevents the 5-LO/FLAP interaction at the nuclear envelope of human leukocytes without blocking 5-LO nuclear redistribution. BRP-187 inhibited 5-LO product formation in human monocytes and polymorphonuclear leukocytes stimulated by lipopolysaccharide plus N-formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (IC50=7-10nM), and upon activation by ionophore A23187 (IC50=10-60nM). Excess of exogenous AA markedly impaired the potency of BRP-187. Direct 5-LO inhibition in cell-free assays was evident only at >35-fold higher concentrations, which was reversible and not improved under reducing conditions. BRP-187 prevented A23187-induced 5-LO/FLAP complex assembly in leukocytes but failed to block 5-LO nuclear translocation, features that were shared with the FLAP inhibitor MK886. Whereas AA release, cyclooxygenases and related LOs were unaffected, BRP-187 also potently inhibited microsomal prostaglandin E2 synthase-1 (IC50=0.2ÎĽM), another MAPEG member. In vivo, BRP-187 (10mg/kg) exhibited significant effectiveness in zymosan-induced murine peritonitis, suppressing LT levels in peritoneal exudates as well as vascular permeability and neutrophil infiltration. Together, BRP-187 potently inhibits LT biosynthesis in vitro and in vivo, which seemingly is caused by preventing the 5-LO/FLAP complex assembly and warrants further preclinical evaluation
