Dynamics of neural systems with discrete and distributed time delays
In real-world systems, interactions between elements do not happen instantaneously, due to the time
required for a signal to propagate, reaction times of individual elements, and so forth. Moreover,
time delays are normally nonconstant and may vary with time. This means that it is vital to introduce
time delays in any realistic model of neural networks. In order to analyze the fundamental
properties of neural networks with time-delayed connections, we consider a system of two coupled
two-dimensional nonlinear delay differential equations. This model represents a neural network,
where one subsystem receives a delayed input from another subsystem. An exciting feature of the
model under consideration is the combination of both discrete and distributed delays, where distributed
time delays represent the neural feedback between the two subsystems, and the discrete
delays describe the neural interaction within each of the two subsystems. Stability properties are
investigated for different commonly used distribution kernels, and the results are compared to the
corresponding results on stability for networks with no distributed delays. It is shown how approximations
of the boundary of the stability region of a trivial equilibrium can be obtained analytically
for the cases of delta, uniform, and weak gamma delay distributions. Numerical techniques are used
to investigate stability properties of the fully nonlinear system, and they fully confirm all analytical
findings
Optical fiber refractive index sensor with low detection limit and large dynamic range using a hybrid fiber interferometer
A refractive index (RI) fiber sensor with low detection limit but large dynamic range is proposed and demonstrated using an exposed core microstructured optical fiber. The exposed-core fiber is highly birefringent due to its asymmetry and also supports multimode propagation; thus, can be used simultaneously as a Mach-Zehnder and Sagnac interferometer. The Mach-Zehnder interference is significantly more phase sensitive to RI due to a longer effective path length difference. This leads to a lower detection limit compared to that for the Sagnac interferometer, which has a larger free spectral range that allows the dynamic range of the RI measurement to be extended. By combining these two interferometers, the proposed sensor achieves a detection limit of as low as 6.02 × 10⁻⁶ refractive index units (RIU) while maintaining a large dynamic range from 1.3320 to 1.3465 RIU. Simulated sunlight-induced inactivation of tetracycline resistant bacteria and effects of dissolved organic matter
The transmission of antibiotic resistance in surface water has attracted much attention due to its increasing threat to human health. The role of sunlight irradiation and the effect of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on the transmission of antibiotic resistance are still unclear. In this study, photo-inactivation of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) was investigated using antibiotic resistant E. coli (AR E. coli) that contained the tetracycline resistance gene (Tc-ARG) as a representative. The results showed that AR E. coli underwent significant photo-inactivation due to the membrane damage induced by direct irradiation and by the generated reactive oxygen species. Simulated sunlight irradiation specifically suppressed the expression of tetracycline resistance, which is attributed to the destruction of tetracycline-specific efflux pump. Tetracycline inhibited the photo-inactivation of AR E. coli due to its selective pressure on tetracycline resistant E. coli and competitive light absorption effect. Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA), a representative DOM, promoted the inactivation of AR E. coli and further inhibited the expression of tetracycline resistance gene due to the generation of its excited triplet state, singlet oxygen, and hydroxyl radical. The extracellular Tc-ARG also underwent fast photodegradation under light irradiation and in the presence of SRFA, which leads to the decrease of its transformation efficiency. This study provided insight into the sunlight-induced inactivation of ARB, which is of significance for understanding the transmission of tetracycline resistance in surface water.Environmental Biolog
Euler configurations and quasi-polynomial systems
In the Newtonian 3-body problem, for any choice of the three masses, there
are exactly three Euler configurations (also known as the three Euler points).
In Helmholtz' problem of 3 point vortices in the plane, there are at most three
collinear relative equilibria. The "at most three" part is common to both
statements, but the respective arguments for it are usually so different that
one could think of a casual coincidence. By proving a statement on a
quasi-polynomial system, we show that the "at most three" holds in a general
context which includes both cases. We indicate some hard conjectures about the
configurations of relative equilibrium and suggest they could be attacked

Thermodynamic properties of thin films of superfluid 3He-A
The pairing correlations in superfluid He-3 are strongly modified by
quasiparticle scattering off a surface or an interface. We present theoretical
results and predictions for the order parameter, the quasiparticle excitation
spectrum and the free energy for thin films of superfluid He-3. Both specular
and diffuse scattering by a substrate are considered, while the free surface is
assumed to be a perfectly reflecting specular boundary. The results are based
on self-consistent calculations of the order parameter and quasiparticle
excitation spectrum at zero pressure. We obtain new results for the phase
diagram, free energy, entropy and specific heat of thin films of superfluid

We report on a search for the decays J/Psi --> Ds- e+ nu_e + c.c., J/Psi -->
D- e+ nu_e + c.c., and J/Psi --> D0bar e+ e- + c.c. in a sample of 5.8 * 10^7
J/Psi events collected with the BESII detector at the BEPC. No excess of signal
above background is observed, and 90% confidence level upper limits on the

Calculations on the Size Effects of Raman Intensities of Silicon Quantum Dots
Raman intensities of Si quantum dots (QDs) with up to 11,489 atoms (about 7.6
nm in diameter) for different scattering configurations are calculated. First,
phonon modes in these QDs, including all vibration frequencies and vibration
amplitudes, are calculated directly from the lattice dynamic matrix by using a
microscopic valence force field model combined with the group theory. Then the
Raman intensities of these quantum dots are calculated by using a
bond-polarizability approximation. The size effects of the Raman intensity in
these QDs are discussed in detail based on these calculations. The calculations
are compared with the available experimental observation. We are expecting that
our calculations can further stimulate more experimental measurements.Comment: 21 pages, 7 figure
Beneficial effects of brown fat activation on top of PCSK9 inhibition with alirocumab on dyslipidemia and atherosclerosis development in APOE*3-Leiden.CETP mice
Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibition, by increasing hepatic low density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor (LDLR) levels, has emerged as a strategy to reduce atherosclerosis by lowering circulating very low density lipoprotein (VLDL)-cholesterol. We hypothesized that the therapeutic effectiveness of PCSK9 inhibition can be increased by accelerating the generation of VLDL remnants, which typically have a high affinity for the LDLR. Therefore, we aimed to investigate whether accelerating lipolytic processing of VLDL by brown fat activation can further lower (V)LDL and reduce atherosclerosis on top of PCSK9 inhibition. APOE*3-Leiden.CETP mice were fed a Western-type diet and treated with the anti-PCSK9 antibody alirocumab or saline. After 2 weeks, both groups of mice were randomized to receive either the selective beta 3-adrenergic receptor (AR) agonist CL316,243 to activate brown fat or saline for 3 additional weeks to evaluate VLDL clearance or 12 additional weeks to analyze atherosclerosis development. beta 3-AR agonism and alirocumab combined decreased (V)LDL-cholesterol compared to alirocumab alone, which was explained by an accelerated plasma clearance of VLDL-cholesteryl esters that were mainly taken up by the liver. In addition, the combination promoted the transfer of VLDL-phospholipids to HDL to a higher extent than alirocumab alone, accompanied by higher plasma HDL-cholesterol levels and increased cholesterol efflux capacity. Consequently, combination treatment largely reduced atherosclerotic lesion area compared to vehicle. Together, beta 3-AR agonism enhances the lipoprotein-modulating effects of alirocumab to further improve dyslipidemia and non-significantly further attenuate atherosclerosis development. Measurements of the observed cross sections for exclusive light hadron production in e^+e^- annihilation at \sqrt{s}= 3.773 and 3.650 GeV
By analyzing the data sets of 17.3 pb taken at GeV
and 6.5 pb taken at GeV with the BESII detector at the
BEPC collider, we have measured the observed cross sections for 12 exclusive
light hadron final states produced in annihilation at the two energy
points. We have also set the upper limits on the observed cross sections and
the branching fractions for decay to these final states at 90%
