Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) is an aromatic plant with high culinary demand in Mexico and one of the agricultural products from Puebla that is exported to the United States. This product has been affected by FDA Import Alert 24-23 that prohibits its export, due to the detection of pathogens associated with disease outbreaks among consumers. The objective of this research was to carry out a diagnosis of the production, harvest and post-harvest process (in the packaging units of the producing region) to characterize the stages in the process and to assess capacities that require consolidation to achieve product safety. Through the application of surveys and interviews applied to producers, packers, operators and safety advisors, combined with an analysis of Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT), we carried out characterization of production, harvest and packaging processes. As a complementary activity, key stakeholders were trained in the Fresh Produce Safety course (endorsed by the Produce Safety Alliance) and their participation was evaluated. In conclusion, it appears that the system is disorganized and there are deficiencies concerning safe handling of the product. High productive capacity was observed in a region suffering from a high degree of marginalization, poverty, insecurity and environmental deterioration, suggesting that the problems have multifactorial origins and must be analyzed from a perspective that considers social, economic and environmental aspects.
Magnetism of small V clusters embedded in a Cu fcc matrix: an ab initio study
We present extensive first principles density functional theory (DFT)
calculations dedicated to analyze the magnetic and electronic properties of
small V clusters (n=1,2,3,4,5,6) embedded in a Cu fcc matrix. We consider
different cluster structures such as: i) a single V impurity, ii) several
V dimers having different interatomic distance and varying local atomic
environment, iii) V and iv) V clusters for which we assume compact
as well as 2- and 1-dimensional atomic configurations and finally, in the case
of the v) V and vi) V structures we consider a square pyramid and a
square bipyramid together with linear arrays, respectively. In all cases, the V
atoms are embedded as substitutional impurities in the Cu network. In general,
and as in the free standing case, we have found that the V clusters tend to
form compact atomic arrays within the cooper matrix. Our calculated non
spin-polarized density of states at the V sites shows a complex peaked
structure around the Fermi level that strongly changes as a function of both
the interatomic distance and local atomic environment, a result that
anticipates a non trivial magnetic behavior. In fact, our DFT calculations
reveal, in each one of our clusters systems, the existence of different
magnetic solutions (ferromagnetic, ferrimagnetic, and antiferromagnetic) with
very small energy differences among them, a result that could lead to the
existence of complex finite-temperature magnetic properties. Finally, we
compare our results with recent experimental measurements.Comment: 7 pages and 4 figure
Light scattering from self-affine fractal silver surfaces with nanoscale cutoff: Far-field and near-field calculations
We study the light scattered from randomly rough, one-dimensional self-affine
fractal silver surfaces with nanoscale lower cutoff, illuminated by s- or
p-polarized Gaussian beams a few microns wide. By means of rigorous numerical
calculations based on the Green theorem integral equation formulation, we
obtain both the far- and near-field scattered intensities. The influence of
diminishing the fractal lower scale cutoff (from below a hundred, down to a few
nanometers) is analyzed in the case of both single realizations and ensemble
average magnitudes. For s polarization, variations are small in the far field,
being only significant in the higher spatial frequency components of evanescent
character in the near field. In the case of p polarization, however, the
nanoscale cutoff has remarkable effects stemming from the roughness-induced
excitation of surface-plasmon polaritons. In the far field, the effect is
noticed both in the speckle pattern variation and in the decrease of the total
reflected energy upon ensemble averaging, due to increased absorption. In the
near field, more efficient excitation of localized optical modes is achieved
with smaller cutoff, which in turn leads to huge surface electric field
enhancements.Comment: REVTeX 4, 10 page

Surface waves on two-dimensional rough Neumann surfaces
A planar surface on which a scalar wave satisfies the Neumann boundary conditions does not support a surface wave. However, a structured Neumann surface can support such a wave. By means of a Rayleigh equation for a scalar field in the region above the two-dimensional rough surface of a semi-infinite medium on which the Neumann boundary condition is satisfied, we derive the dispersion relation for surface waves on both doubly periodic and randomly rough surfaces. Dispersion curves for these waves on doubly periodic surfaces with three forms of the surface profile function are presented together with dispersion curves for surface waves on a two-dimensional randomly rough surface

Magnetism of Fe clusters embedded in Cu, Ag, and Au fcc matrices: density functional calculations
We present extensive first principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations
dedicated to analyze the magnetic properties of small Fen
clusters (n = 2,3) embedded in Cu fcc, Ag fcc and Au fcc
matrices. We consider several dimers and trimers having different interatomic distances.
In all cases the Fe atoms are embedded as substitutional impurities in the metallic
network. For the case of the Fe dimers we have considered two magnetic configurations:
ferromagnetic (antiferromagnetic), when the atomic magnetic moment of the Fe atoms are
parallel (antiparallel) each other. For the case of dimers immersed in Cu and Ag matrices,
the ground state corresponds to the ferromagnetic Fe dimer whose interatomic distance is a/√2. For Fe dimer immersed in the Au matrix the ground state corresponds to
a ferromagnetic coupling when the interatomic distance is a√(3/2). In the case of the Fe trimers we have considered three or four magnetic
configurations, depending on the Fe cluster geometry. For the case of Fe trimer immersed
in Cu and Ag matrices we have found that the ground state corresponds to the ferromagnetic
trimer forming an equilateral triangle with an interatomic distance equal to a/√2. The ground state for the Fe trimer immersed in the Au matrix
corresponds to the ferromagnetic Fe trimer forming a right angle triangle
