    The Lesbian Continuum and Trauma as Expressed by Toni Morrisonā€™s Sula

    African American women are poorly attributed in literature as they are representative of two western minority subdivisions: race and gender. Partnering those differences with the formulated intimacy that is seemingly resultant of locked-in familiarity, relationships lacking sexual concourse and representative of platonic boundaries are formed, making this demographic one of the least addressed literary elements of our time. That is not to say that literature that espouses black female-female relationships doesnā€™t exist, but rather that it receives little recognition. In Toni Morrisonā€™s Sula, the close relationship between Nel and Sula represents the African American subdivision of the lesbian continuum ideal that was first identified and written about exhaustively by Adrienne Rich in Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence. Of similar substance, Barbara Smithā€™s Toward a Black Feminist Criticism includes Sula as representation of her claims of the existence of a comprehensive bond and relationship that often forms between black females. Nel and Sula, both come from exclusively trauma-laden backgrounds and experience the devastating effects of a shared, harrowing experience that grows with them into adulthood and, contrary to Smith\u27s prose, represent a relationship of intimacy formulated by trauma resultant of their subculture, as opposed to a relationship contrived wholly of this grouping and its effects. Sula should be read as an expressional adaptation of the African American female bonds that form from traumas specific to the societal implications of the gender and race of African American women and its relation to the lesbian continuum

    Art Acknowledged and Disregarded: Art and Its National Context at St. Cloud State University

    Existing histories of St. Cloud State University pay little attention to art and its place at the school. Given that the university is currently home to an accredited art program, and a rather large collection of art, recognition of the contribution art has made to the school is overdue. Delving into records, one finds that art played a role in the curriculum and mission of the institution from its very beginning as a normal school. Though not always strong or valued, it grew with the school nonetheless. Examining this role as it relates to developments with art regionally and nationally reveals that the schoolā€™s experience often paralleled these broader trends. Early on, at St. Cloud and elsewhere, art was often associated with the elite. If it made it into the schools, it was largely seen as a supplementary tool to teaching and most useful only in conjunction with other subjects. The school eventually acknowledged the value of art appreciation and worked to instill this in its students through a collection of reproductions and a lively discourse on art. Art advocates elsewhere worked heartily to dispel the elitist association and develop an appreciation of art apart from its practical value among the public and within the government. As the school grew to serve more than future teachers, art slowly asserted a more independent place on campus. Similarly, arts organizations geared toward the general public began to appear in Minnesota and the federal government established support with the New Deal. This pace exploded during the 1960s, as the school experienced overwhelming change and growth. The art program expanded spectacularly, bringing in faculty who earnestly worked toward building a collection of original artworks. The art departmentā€™s focus also began to turn from art teachers to artists. Inadequate facilities and equipment plagued the program as consequences of such growth. Nationally, after struggling for decades to pass arts legislation, the National Endowment for the Arts was created in this period, allowing arts support to grow as never before. This also brought consequences, as economic and cultural challenges forced advocates to prove the worth of art and the agency. As growth slowed at St. Cloud, art on campus faced similar challenges and the program adjusted to meet the diversifying needs of its students. Today, though art is accepted at the University, the struggle to maintain an adequate level of support remains

    Effects of a Pyrrole-Based, Microtubule-Depolymerizing Compound on RAW 264.7 Macrophages

    RAW 264.7 murine macrophages were exposed to the pyrrole-based compound 3,5-Dibromo-4-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-1H-pyrrole-2-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (JG-03-14), which is a known microtubule depolymerizing agent with antitumor activity [1,2,3]. In this study exposure to JG-03-14 reduced the production of pro-inflammatory molecules by macrophages activated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Treatment with the pyrrole-based compound decreased the concentration of tumor necrosis factor-Ī± (TNF-Ī±) and nitric oxide (NO) released from the macrophages. Exposure to JG-03-14 also decreased TNF-Ī± mRNA expression levels and the protein expression levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), the enzyme responsible for NO production in the activated macrophages. Furthermore, JG-03-14 treatment significantly changed the degradation profile of IĪŗB-Ī², an inhibitor of the NF-ĪŗB transcription factor, which suggests that JG-03ā€“14 may attenuate the activation of the LPS-induced NF-ĪŗB signaling pathway needed to produce the pro-inflammatory mediators. We conclude that JG-03-14 possesses anti-inflammatory properties

    Evaluation of the neonatal Sequential Organ Failure Assessment and mortality risk in preterm infants with late-onset infection

    Importance: Infection in neonates remains a substantial problem. Advances for this population are hindered by the absence of a consensus definition for sepsis. In adults, the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) operationalizes mortality risk with infection and defines sepsis. The generalizability of the neonatal SOFA (nSOFA) for neonatal late-onset infection-related mortality remains unknown. Objective: To determine the generalizability of the nSOFA for neonatal late-onset infection-related mortality across multiple sites. Design, Setting, and Participants: A multicenter retrospective cohort study was conducted at 7 academic neonatal intensive care units between January 1, 2010, and December 31, 2019. Participants included 653 preterm (\u3c33 weeks) very low-birth-weight infants. Exposures: Late-onset (\u3e72 hours of life) infection including bacteremia, fungemia, or surgical peritonitis. Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary outcome was late-onset infection episode mortality. The nSOFA scores from survivors and nonsurvivors with confirmed late-onset infection were compared at 9 time points (T) preceding and following event onset. Results: In the 653 infants who met inclusion criteria, median gestational age was 25.5 weeks (interquartile range, 24-27 weeks) and median birth weight was 780 g (interquartile range, 638-960 g). A total of 366 infants (56%) were male. Late-onset infection episode mortality occurred in 97 infants (15%). Area under the receiver operating characteristic curves for mortality in the total cohort ranged across study centers from 0.71 to 0.95 (T0 hours), 0.77 to 0.96 (T6 hours), and 0.78 to 0.96 (T12 hours), with utility noted at all centers and in aggregate. Using the maximum nSOFA score at T0 or T6, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for mortality was 0.88 (95% CI, 0.84-0.91). Analyses stratified by sex or Gram-stain identification of pathogen class or restricted to infants born at less than 25 weeks\u27 completed gestation did not reduce the association of the nSOFA score with infection-related mortality. Conclusions and Relevance: The nSOFA score was associated with late-onset infection mortality in preterm infants at the time of evaluation both in aggregate and in each center. These findings suggest that the nSOFA may serve as the foundation for a consensus definition of sepsis in this population

    Metalloprotease OMA1 Fine-tunes Mitochondrial Bioenergetic Function and Respiratory Supercomplex Stability

    Mitochondria are involved in key cellular functions including energy production, metabolic homeostasis, and apoptosis. Normal mitochondrial function is preserved by several interrelated mechanisms. One mechanism ā€“ intramitochondrial quality control (IMQC) ā€“ is represented by conserved proteases distributed across mitochondrial compartments. Many aspects and physiological roles of IMQC components remain unclear. Here, we show that the IMQC protease Oma1 is required for the stability of the respiratory supercomplexes and thus balanced and tunable bioenergetic function. Loss of Oma1 activity leads to a specific destabilization of respiratory supercomplexes and consequently to unbalanced respiration and progressive respiratory decline in yeast. Similarly, experiments in cultured Oma1-deficient mouse embryonic fibroblasts link together impeded supercomplex stability and inability to maintain proper respiration under conditions that require maximal bioenergetic output. Finally, transient knockdown of OMA1 in zebrafish leads to impeded bioenergetics and morphological defects of the heart and eyes. Together, our biochemical and genetic studies in yeast, zebrafish and mammalian cells identify a novel and conserved physiological role for Oma1 protease in fine-tuning of respiratory function. We suggest that this unexpected physiological role is important for cellular bioenergetic plasticity and may contribute to Oma1- associated disease phenotypes in humans

    Pluralism about Knowledge

    In this paper I consider the prospects for pluralism about knowledge, that is, the view that there is a plurality of knowledge relations. After a brief overview of some views that entail a sort of pluralism about knowledge, I focus on a particular kind of knowledge pluralism I call standards pluralism. Put roughly, standards pluralism is the view that one never knows anything simpliciter. Rather, one knows by this-or-that epistemic standard. Because there is a plurality of epistemic standards, there is a plurality of knowledge relations. In Ā§1 I argue that one can construct an impressive case for standards pluralism. In Ā§2 I clarify the relationship between standards pluralism, epistemic contextualism and epistemic relativism. In Ā§3 I argue that standards pluralism faces a serious objection. The gist of the objection is that standards pluralism is incompatible with plausible claims about the normative role of knowledge. In Ā§4 I finish by sketching the form that a standards pluralist response to this objection might take

    Targeting ligand-activated ErbB2 signaling inhibits breast and prostate tumor growth

    AbstractErbB2 is a ligand-less member of the ErbB receptor family that functions as a coreceptor with EGFR, ErbB3, and ErbB4. Here, we describe an approach to target ErbB2's role as a coreceptor using a monoclonal antibody, 2C4, which sterically hinders ErbB2's recruitment into ErbB ligand complexes. Inhibition of ligand-dependent ErbB2 signaling by 2C4 occurs in both low- and high-ErbB2-expressing systems. Since the ErbB3 receptor contains an inactive tyrosine kinase domain, 2C4 is very effective in blocking heregulin-mediated ErbB3-ErbB2 signaling. We demonstrate that the in vitro and in vivo growth of several breast and prostate tumor models is inhibited by 2C4 treatment

    Short-term in-home intervention reduces depressive symptoms in early head start Latina mothers of infants and toddlers

    Depressive symptoms may compromise the ability of low-income Latina mothers with limited English language proficiency to parent their infants or toddlers. Eighty Early Head Start Latina mothers with limited English language proficiency were randomized to an advanced practice nurse-delivered, culturally tailored, in-home psychotherapy intervention, or to usual care. Repeated measures regression analysis showed a significantly greater decrease in depressive symptoms for intervention mothers compared to the usual care group at 22 and 26 weeks (4 weeks post intervention). Intervention mothersā€™ reports of their child's aggression diminished significantly from T1 to T4 compared to usual care mothers (p= .03). Self-efficacy appeared to only partially mediate the intervention effect, and maternal health moderated the intervention impact. Results indicate that the intervention reduced depressive symptoms and, compared to previous studies in this population, retention of mothers in both intervention and control conditions was improved

    Temperature-related changes in airborne allergenic pollen abundance and seasonality across the northern hemisphere : a retrospective data analysis

    BACKGROUND: Ongoing climate change might, through rising temperatures, alter allergenic pollen biology across the northern hemisphere. We aimed to analyse trends in pollen seasonality and pollen load and to establish whether there are specific climate-related links to any observed changes. METHODS: For this retrospective data analysis, we did an extensive search for global datasets with 20 years or more of airborne pollen data that consistently recorded pollen season indices (eg, duration and intensity). 17 locations across three continents with long-term (approximately 26 years on average) quantitative records of seasonal concentrations of multiple pollen (aeroallergen) taxa met the selection criteria. These datasets were analysed in the context of recent annual changes in maximum temperature (T) and minimum temperature (T) associated with anthropogenic climate change. Seasonal regressions (slopes) of variation in pollen load and pollen season duration over time were compared to T, cumulative degree day T, T, cumulative degree day T, and frost-free days among all 17 locations to ascertain significant correlations. FINDINGS: 12 (71%) of the 17 locations showed significant increases in seasonal cumulative pollen or annual pollen load. Similarly, 11 (65%) of the 17 locations showed a significant increase in pollen season duration over time, increasing, on average, 0Ā·9 days per year. Across the northern hemisphere locations analysed, annual cumulative increases in T over time were significantly associated with percentage increases in seasonal pollen load (r=0Ā·52, p=0Ā·034) as were annual cumulative increases in T (r=0Ā·61, p=0Ā·010). Similar results were observed for pollen season duration, but only for cumulative degree days (higher than the freezing point [0Ā°C or 32Ā°F]) for T (r=0Ā·53, p=0Ā·030) and T (r=0Ā·48, p=0Ā·05). Additionally, temporal increases in frost-free days per year were significantly correlated with increases in both pollen load (r=0Ā·62, p=0Ā·008) and pollen season duration (r=0Ā·68, p=0Ā·003) when averaged for all 17 locations. INTERPRETATION: Our findings reveal that the ongoing increase in temperature extremes (T and T) might already be contributing to extended seasonal duration and increased pollen load for multiple aeroallergenic pollen taxa in diverse locations across the northern hemisphere. This study, done across multiple continents, highlights an important link between ongoing global warming and public health-one that could be exacerbated as temperatures continue to increase.
