A complete quasiclassical map for the dynamics of interacting fermions
We present a strategy for mapping the dynamics of a fermionic quantum system
to a set of classical dynamical variables. The approach is based on imposing
the correspondence relation between the commutator and the Poisson bracket,
preserving Heisenberg's equation of motion for one-body operators. In order to
accommodate the effect of two-body terms, we further impose quantization on the
spin-dependent occupation numbers in the classical equations of motion, with a
parameter that is determined self-consistently. Expectation values for
observables are taken with respect to an initial quasiclassical distribution
that respects the original quantization of the occupation numbers. The proposed
classical map becomes complete under the evolution of quadratic Hamiltonians
and is extended for all even order observables. We show that the map provides
an accurate description of the dynamics for an interacting quantum impurity
model in the coulomb blockade regime, at both low and high temperatures. The
numerical results are aided by a novel importance sampling scheme that employs
a reference system to reduce significantly the sampling effort required to
converge the classical calculations
TakeCARE, a Video Bystander Program to Help Prevent Sexual Violence on College Campuses: Results of Two Randomized, Controlled Trials
Objective: The present research reports on two randomized controlled trials evaluating TakeCARE, a video bystander program designed to help prevent sexual violence on college campuses. Method: In Study 1, students were recruited from psychology courses at two universities. In Study 2, first-year students were recruited from a required course at one university. In both studies, students were randomly assigned to view one of two videos: TakeCARE or a control video on study skills. Just before viewing the videos, students completed measures of bystander behavior toward friends and ratings of self-efficacy for performing such behaviors. The efficacy measure was administered again after the video, and both the bystander behavior measure and the efficacy measure were administered at either one (Study 1) or two (Study 2) months later. Results: In both studies, students who viewed TakeCARE, compared to students who viewed the control video, reported engaging in more bystander behavior toward friends and greater feelings of efficacy for performing such behavior. In Study 1, feelings of efficacy mediated effects of TakeCARE on bystander behavior; this result did not emerge in Study 2. Conclusions: This research demonstrates that TakeCARE, a video bystander program, can positively influence bystander behavior toward friends. Given its potential to be easily distributed to an entire campus community, TakeCARE might be an effective addition to campus efforts to prevent sexual violence
Upstairs, Downstairs: Computer-Skill Complementarity and Computer-Labor Substitution on Two Floors of a Large Bank
We describe how a single technological innovation, the introduction of image processing of checks, led to distinctly different changes in the structure of jobs in two departments of a large bank overseen by one group of managers. In the downstairs deposit processing department, image processing led to the substitution of computers for high school educated labor in accomplishing core tasks and in greater specialization in the jobs that remained. In the upstairs exceptions processing department, image processing led to the integration of tasks, with an associated increase in the demand for particular skills. The case illustrates the interdependence of technological change and organizational change. It suggests that seeing the whole picture' and associated conceptual and problem-solving skills are made more valuable by information technologies. Finally, it underscores that the short-term consequences of technological changes may depend importantly on regulatory forces.
AFLOW-SYM: Platform for the complete, automatic and self-consistent symmetry analysis of crystals
Determination of the symmetry profile of structures is a persistent challenge
in materials science. Results often vary amongst standard packages, hindering
autonomous materials development by requiring continuous user attention and
educated guesses. Here, we present a robust procedure for evaluating the
complete suite of symmetry properties, featuring various representations for
the point-, factor-, space groups, site symmetries, and Wyckoff positions. The
protocol determines a system-specific mapping tolerance that yields symmetry
operations entirely commensurate with fundamental crystallographic principles.
The self consistent tolerance characterizes the effective spatial resolution of
the reported atomic positions. The approach is compared with the most used
programs and is successfully validated against the space group information
provided for over 54,000 entries in the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database.
Subsequently, a complete symmetry analysis is applied to all 1.7 million
entries of the AFLOW data repository. The AFLOW-SYM package has been
implemented in, and made available for, public use through the automated,

Updates in the perioperative and emergency management of non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants.
Perioperative management of patients treated with the non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants is an ongoing challenge. Due to the lack of good clinical studies involving adequate monitoring and reversal therapies, management requires knowledge and understanding of pharmacokinetics, renal function, drug interactions, and evaluation of the surgical bleeding risk. Consideration of the benefit of reversal of anticoagulation is important and, for some low risk bleeding procedures, it may be in the patient's interest to continue anticoagulation. In case of major intra-operative bleeding in patients likely to have therapeutic or supra-therapeutic levels of anticoagulation, specific reversal agents/antidotes would be of value but are currently lacking. As a consequence, a multimodal approach should be taken which includes the administration of 25 to 50 U/kg 4-factor prothrombin complex concentrates or 30 to 50 U/kg activated prothrombin complex concentrate (FEIBA®) in some life-threatening situations. Finally, further studies are needed to clarify the ideal therapeutic intervention
A Novel Over-Sea-Ice Seismic Reflection Survey in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica
During the austral spring of 2005, approximately 28 km of over-sea-ice seismic reflection data were recorded over McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, in support of the ANtarctic geological DRILLing Program (ANDRILL). The 2005 ANDRILL Southern McMurdo Sound Project (SMS) seismic survey incorporated techniques that improved the quality of over-sea-ice seismic data. Previous over-sea-ice seismic experiments have had limited success because of poor source coupling caused by thin sea ice and source bubble-pulse effects caused by explosive seismic sources placed in the water column. To mitigate these problems, a Generator-Injector (GI) air gun was used as the seismic source. The GI air gun was lowered into the water column through holes drilled through the sea ice. The GI air gun minimized the source bubble effects that had plagued previous over-sea-ice experiments in the Antarctic. A 60-channel seismic snow streamer consisting of vertically oriented gimbaled geophones with 25-m takeout spacing was employed to aid rapid data collection. The 2005 SMS seismic survey produced data that accurately tied into existing single-channel marine seismic data and demonstrated the value of the air-gun/snow-streamer system for future over-sea-ice seismic surveys in the Antarctic

Anisotropic Magnetoresistance in GaMnAs
We have measured the magnetoresistance in a series of GaMnAs
samples with 0.033 0.053 for three mutually orthogonal orientations
of the applied magnetic field. The spontaneous resistivity anisotropy (SRA) in
these materials is negative (i.e. the sample resistance is higher when its
magnetization is perpendicular to the measuring current than when the two are
parallel) and has a magnitude on the order of 5% at temperatures near 10K and
below. This stands in contrast to the results for most conventional magnetic
materials where the SRA is considerably smaller in magnitude for those few
cases in which a negative sign is observed. The magnitude of the SRA drops from
its maximum at low temperatures to zero at T in a manner that is consistent
with mean field theory. These results should provide a significant test for
