    Materiality analysis is a multi-purpose tool for prioritising sustainability issues from the double perspective of companies and stakeholders, meaning that both parties contribute to identifying the present and emerging social and environmental risks and opportunities. The current study proposes a practical and structured approach for performing materiality analysis, integrating the well-known Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) materiality matrix and a new "adequacy matrix". The purpose of the GRI materiality matrix is to prioritize sustainability issues in terms of relevance to both companies and stakeholders. The adequacy matrix supports evaluation of the transparency and effectiveness of corporate sustainability (CS) communication. Particularly, the paper aims to give indications to companies that want to prepare a sustainability report according to the GRI guidelines by planning the allocation of resources to reporting activities: the comparison between the positioning of GRI sustainability aspects in the two matrices serves in identifying the most critical issues for improving accountability. The proposed method includes a consistency test, to overcome the subjectivity, uncertainty and vagueness affecting judgements. The results provide managers with useful information for aligning CS strategic decision-making, sustainability reporting, and accountability to stakeholders.     Understanding how the strategic similarities between energy companies influence the post-mergers and acquisitions performances

    The energy sector has experienced rapid evolution in recent years, following the liberalization of the electricity and natural gas markets, driven by the European Union. These developments have led to a certain level of dynamism in Italy, particularly as concerns mergers and acquisitions (M&As) within the sector. This article examines the influence of strategic similarities between the target and bidder companies on their post-M&A performances. The model used involves a hierarchical regression relating the indexes of similarity between the merging companies, regarding their economic-financial management. The results reveal the influence of the strategic similarities and differences on the post-M&A performances of the companies, showing how the positive or negative effect depends on certain characteristics, such as their structure of share capital, business segments and size. The study evidences the strategic variables that should be considered in choosing the optimal target companies

    Explaining the servitization paradox: a configurational theory and a performance measurement framework

    Purpose Previous research reports mixed results regarding the performance impact of servitization in manufacturing firms. To resolve this, the purpose of this paper is to develop a conceptually consistent and comprehensive measurement framework for both dimensions, servitization and its performance effect, and apply in a configurational analysis to reexamine previous evidence, arriving at a configurational theory of the relationship between servitization and firm performance. Design/methodology/approach Combining systematic literature review (SLR) and inductive reasoning, the existing indicators for servitization and performance are identified and clustered into groups that adequately represent both dimensions. The dataset is reanalyzed against the resulting framework to identify the configurational patterns and to formulate the theoretical propositions. Findings Financial and nonfinancial indicators of servitization and its performance impact are organized into a comprehensive measurement framework grounded on existing research. The subsequent meta-analysis shows that the positive or negative impacts of servitization on performance depend on how firms implement servitization strategies and which performance aspects are examined. Research limitations/implications The results explain when servitization can be successful and confirm the existence of the so-called servitization paradox. The meta-analysis identified patterns that explain the previous mixed results, shaping a configurational theory of servitization. Thus, the measurement framework is conceptually robust and has sufficient detail to capture servitization and its performance outcome as it feasibly distinguished between different organizational configurations. Originality/value The framework provides a comprehensive portfolio of indicators for both managers and scholars to measure servitization intensity and performance. This supports managers of servitizing firms in leading this organizational transformation while avoiding its organizational and financial paradoxes

    Environmental performance versus economic-financial performance: evidence from Italian firms

    The aim of the study is to evaluate the economic-financial performance of a sample of 236 Italian companies in relation to their environmental performance, measured in terms of CO2 emissions normalized by company turnover. In addition to the company’s economic management, the analysis also considers the equity structure and company liquidity, over a period of 6 years (2008-2013). The analysis involves the creation of four maps of positioning, serving to represent the companies of the sample in relation to their different attitudes: (i) Green efficiency, (ii) operational efficiency, (iii) company profitability, (iv) financial viability, (v) company liquidity. The examination of positioning maps also serves in identifying extreme cases, meaning the totally inefficient and the “virtuous” companies, and for conducting sectoral analyses to evaluate potential relations between company performances and the characteristics of their industrial sector

    Towards fully-facilitated DES modelling:a successful project

    The literature suggests that increasing stakeholder engagement in modelling has a positive impact on healthcare improvement projects using discrete-event simulation (DES). This suggests analysts should strive for the ‘fully-facilitated’ mode of simulation, meaning conducting the whole simulation project together with stakeholders. This paper investigates whether this might be possible in practice. This work arose from a research project with an Italian hospital. The paper describes a simulation project that succeeds in being fully-facilitated through all stages as far as the implementation stage, through combining Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) and DES. We believe it is the first time that a fully-facilitated DES project in healthcare has been described

    Genetic prescreening of a candidate for laser refractive surgery identifies risk for inadequate tissue response: a case report

    BACKGROUND: Inadequate response to corneal laser refractive surgery, e.g., ectatic corneal diseases, may not be identified by conventional examinations, hence creating therapeutic uncertainty. Herein we demonstrate the application of genetic prescreening to augment preassessment for corneal laser refractive surgery and highlight the ability to prevent the possibility of enrolling a subject at risk for developing ectatic corneal diseases. CASE PRESENTATION: Preoperative tests were performed alongside deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) sequencing of 75 genes specific to the structure and health of the eye of a 44-year-old Caucasian male candidate for corneal laser refractive surgery. The patient had no medical, family, or psychosocial history, nor symptoms that could lead to suspect any corneal abnormalities, and conventional preoperative tests confirmed that no corneal abnormalities were present. The sequencing results uncovered rare DNA variants within the ADGRV1, PTK2, ZNF469, and KRT15 genes. These variants were considered potential risk factors for inadequate response in the patient post corneal laser refractive surgery. Subsequent reevaluation with three different last-generation corneal tomographers identified in the left eye a “warning” for a deformity of the posterior profile of the cornea. CONCLUSIONS: Genetic prescreening identifies potential risk of inadequate response to corneal laser refractive surgery where current technologies in use may lead to a hazardous predictive diagnostic uncertainty

    Long-Term Structural and Functional Assessment of Doyne Honeycomb Retinal Dystrophy following Nanosecond 2RT Laser Treatment: A Case Series

    Introduction: Doyne honeycomb retinal dystrophy (DHRD), or autosomal dominant radial drusen, is a genetic disease caused by pathogenic variants of the epidermal growth factor (EGF)-containing fibulin-like extracellular matrix protein 1 EFEMP1 gene and is characterized by the formation of subretinal drusenoid deposits. In a previous study, we reported the short-term beneficial effects of nanosecond laser treatment (2RT) on retinal function in DHRD. The aim of the present report was to describe the findings of a long-term follow-up of retinal structure/function in a small case series of patients with DHRD who underwent 2RT treatment. Case Presentation: Three DHRD patients (case 1, male and cases 2 and 3, two sister females, age range 41–46) with EFEMP1 pathogenic variant (c.1033C>T; p.R345W) and drusenoid deposits at the posterior pole were examined at baseline and after 2RT treatment, at regular intervals (every 2–4 months) up to 30 months. All 3 patients underwent one or two treatment sessions in one or both eyes during the follow-up period. Case 3 was treated with only the left eye (LE). Each patient underwent a full ophthalmologic examination, spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT), central perimetry with frequency doubling technology, and mesopic and photopic Ganzfeld electroretinograms. Compared to baseline findings, during follow-up, visual acuity improved in both eyes in case 1 and LE in case 2, while it decreased in the right eye in case 2 and LE in case 3; perimetric sensitivity was stable in case 1 and improved in both eyes in cases 2 and 3; and electroretinogram amplitude improved in cases 1 and 2 and was stable in case 3 (both eyes). OCT central macular thickness and retinal structure were stable in all cases. None of the patients had treatment-related side effects. Conclusion: This is the first report showing that in a long-term follow-up, 2RT treatment in DHRD may improve or stabilize some retinal function parameters without significant structural changes

    A BPMN extension to support discrete-event simulation for healthcare applications:an explicit representation of queues, attributes and data-driven decision points

    Stakeholder engagement in simulation projects is important, especially in healthcare where there is a plurality of stakeholder opinions, objectives and power. One promising approach for increasing engagement is facilitated modelling. Currently, the complexity of producing a simulation model means that the ‘model coding’ stage is performed without the involvement of stakeholders, interrupting the possibility of a fully-facilitated project. Early work demonstrated that with currently-available software tools we can represent a simple healthcare process using Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) and generate a simulation model automatically. However, for more complex processes, BPMN currently has a number of limitations, namely the ability to represent queues and data-driven decision points. To address these limitations, we propose a conceptual design for an extension to BPMN (BPMN4SIM) using Model Driven Architecture. Application to an elderly emergency care pathway in a UK hospital shows that BPMN4SIM is able to represent a more-complex business process
