The invention relates to a concatenated Reed-Solomon/convolutional encoding system consisting of a Reed-Solomon outer code and a convolutional inner code for downlink telemetry in space missions, and more particularly to a Reed-Solomon encoder with programmable interleaving of the information symbols and code correction symbols to combat error bursts in the Viterbi decoder

Modeling Potential Energy of the Gaussian Gun

    Get PDF
The Gaussian gun is an arrangement of magnets and ball bearings (pictured in Fig. 1) such that—when the leftmost ball is released—the rightmost ball is ejected at high speeds. The device has been described in several articles on energy education. The sudden appearance of kinetic energy offers a productive context for considering a range of challenging ideas: the often-counterintuitive relationship between force and potential energy, the escape velocity for attractive forces, why energy is required to break bonds, and why energy is released when bonds form. Beyond these ideas, it is also useful for motivating the representation of a potential well and bound states for both quantum mechanics and chemistry

    Perceptual Context in Cognitive Hierarchies

Cognition does not only depend on bottom-up sensor feature abstraction, but also relies on contextual information being passed top-down. Context is higher level information that helps to predict belief states at lower levels. The main contribution of this paper is to provide a formalisation of perceptual context and its integration into a new process model for cognitive hierarchies. Several simple instantiations of a cognitive hierarchy are used to illustrate the role of context. Notably, we demonstrate the use context in a novel approach to visually track the pose of rigid objects with just a 2D camera

Cardiovascular and Noncardiovascular Prescribing and Mortality After Takotsubo:Comparison With Myocardial Infarction and General Population

BACKGROUND: Takotsubo syndrome is an increasingly common cardiac emergency with no known evidence-based treatment.OBJECTIVES: To investigate cardiovascular mortality and medication use after takotsubo syndrome.METHODS: In a case-control study, all patients with takotsubo syndrome in Scotland between 2010-2017 (n=620) were age, sex and geographically matched to individuals in the general population (1:4, n=2,480) and contemporaneous patients with acute myocardial infarction (1:1, n=620). Electronic health record data linkage of mortality outcomes and drug prescribing were analysed using Cox proportional hazard regression models.RESULTS: Of the 3,720 study participants (mean age, 66 years; 91% women), 153 (25%) patients with takotsubo syndrome died over the median of 5.5 years follow up. This exceeded mortality rates in the general population [374 (15%)]; hazard ratio [HR] 1.78 [95% confidence interval 1.48-2.15], P<0.0001), especially for cardiovascular (HR 2.47, [1.81-3.39], P<0.001) but also non-cardiovascular (HR 1.48 [1.16-1.87], P=0.002) deaths. Mortality rates were lower for patients with takotsubo syndrome than those with myocardial infarction (31%, 195/620; HR 0.76 [0.62-0.94], P=0.012), which was attributable to lower rates of cardiovascular (HR 0.61 [0.44-0.84], P=0.002) but not non-cardiovascular (HR 0.92 [0.69-1.23], P=0.59) deaths. Despite comparable medications use, cardiovascular therapies were consistently associated with better survival in patients with myocardial infarction but not in those with takotsubo syndrome. Diuretic (P=0.01), anti-inflammatory (P=0.002) and psychotropic (P<0.001) therapies were all associated with worse outcomes in patients with takotsubo syndrome.CONCLUSIONS: In patients with takotsubo syndrome, cardiovascular mortality is the leading cause of death, and this is not associated with cardiovascular therapy use

Improving recognition of delirium in clinical practice: a call for action

    Get PDF
The purpose of this correspondence article is to report opinion amongst experts in the delirium field as to why, despite on-going training for all health professionals, delirium continues to be under recognised. Consensus was obtained by means of two conference workshops and an online survey of members of the European Delirium Association. Major barriers to recognition at an individual level include ignorance about the benefit of treating delirium. At an organisational level, reflecting socio-cultural attitudes, barriers include a low strategic and financial priority and the fact that delirium is an orphan condition falling between specialties

Regulation of DNA synthesis and the cell cycle in human prostate cancer cells and lymphocytes by ovine uterine serpin

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Uterine serpins are members of the serine proteinase inhibitor superfamily. Like some other serpins, these proteins do not appear to be functional proteinase inhibitors. The most studied member of the group, ovine uterine serpin (OvUS), inhibits proliferation of several cell types including activated lymphocytes, bovine preimplantation embryos, and cell lines for lymphoma, canine primary osteosarcoma and human prostate cancer (PC-3) cells. The goal for the present study was to evaluate the mechanism by which OvUS inhibits cell proliferation. In particular, it was tested whether inhibition of DNA synthesis in PC-3 cells involves cytotoxic actions of OvUS or the induction of apoptosis. The effect of OvUS in the production of the autocrine and angiogenic cytokine interleukin (IL)-8 by PC-3 cells was also determined. Finally, it was tested whether OvUS blocks specific steps in the cell cycle using both PC-3 cells and lymphocytes.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Recombinant OvUS blocked proliferation of PC-3 cells at concentrations as low as 8 μg/ml as determined by measurements of [3H]thymidine incorporation or ATP content per well. Treatment of PC-3 cells with OvUS did not cause cytotoxicity or apoptosis or alter interleukin-8 secretion into medium. Results from flow cytometry experiments showed that OvUS blocked the entry of PC-3 cells into S phase and the exit from G2/M phase. In addition, OvUS blocked entry of lymphocytes into S phase following activation of proliferation with phytohemagglutinin.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Results indicate that OvUS acts to block cell proliferation through disruption of the cell cycle dynamics rather than induction of cytotoxicity or apoptosis. The finding that OvUS can regulate cell proliferation makes this one of only a few serpins that function to inhibit cell growth.</p

No Pathogenic Mutations Identified in the COL8A2 Gene or Four Positional Candidate Genes in Patients with Posterior Polymorphous Corneal Dystrophy

    Get PDF
PURPOSE. To identify the genetic basis of posterior polymorphous corneal dystrophy (PPCD) through screening of four positional candidate genes and the COL8A2 gene, in which a presumed pathogenic mutation has previously been identified in affected patients. METHODS. DNA extraction, PCR amplification, and direct sequencing of the COL8A2, BFSP1, CST3, MMP9, and SLPI genes were performed in 14 unrelated, affected patients and in unaffected family members. RESULTS. In the COL8A2 gene, the previously identified, presumed pathogenic mutation (Gln455Lys) was not discovered in any of the affected patients. A missense mutation, Thr502Met, was identified in 2 of the 14 affected probands, although it was not considered to be pathogenic, as it has been identified in unaffected individuals. Although several novel and previously identified single nucleotide polymorphisms producing synonymous and missense amino acid substitutions were identified in the COL8A2, BFSP1, CST3, MMP9, and SLPI genes, no presumed pathogenic sequence variants were found. CONCLUSIONS. No pathogenic mutations were identified in the COL8A2 gene or in several positional candidate genes in a series of patients with PPCD, indicating that other genetic factors are involved in the development of this autosomal dominant corneal dystrophy. Bringing 'place' back in: regional clusters, project governance, and new product outcomes

    Get PDF
We examine new product outcomes in the context of regional clusters. Based on past research on marketing relationships, clusters, and social networks, we propose that the overall configuration of a cluster helps promote particular governance practices among its members. These practices have distinct value-creating properties, and when they are brought to bear on a specific new product development project within a cluster, they promote performance outcomes like product novelty and speed to market. Ultimately, these performance effects are reinforced by the configuration of the cluster itself. In general, we propose that new product outcomes follow from complex interactions between a cluster's macro-level configuration and its micro-level governance processes. More broadly, our framework points to the importance of geographical variables and to the role of “place” in marketing decision-making
