    Integration or collision? : middle managers\u27 concerns for work-life balance

    As increased work demands and longer working hours become the reality for many employees, the concept of work-life balance has received increasing attention. This paper presents findings from an exploratory study of Australian middle managers, which investigated the impact of middle managers&rsquo; daily organisational experiences on their lives both in and beyond the workplace. We focus on respondents&rsquo; concerns for the encroachment of work on their personal lives, both through the advent of new technologies and the introduction of flexibility initiatives in the workplace. The unwelcome effects of frustration, stress and fatigue highlight the need for organisations to gain a better understanding of employees&rsquo; experiences related to work-life balance.<br /

    Friendships under strain : the work-personal life integration of middle managers

    Middle managers in today\u27s organisations have reported experiencing longer working hours and intensified work regimes. These increased pressures, in turn, have led to growing difficulty in addressing the integration of their work and personal lives. In an exploratory study of the daily workplace experiences of Australian middle managers and the impacts on their personal lives, one of the key themes to emerge was respondents\u27 concerns about the negative effects on their friendships. This paper discusses middle managers\u27 recognition of the value of friendships for their wellbeing, and the resultant anger and sadness reported at the strain on these relationships due to competing time demands. The significant role that friendships play in alleviating some of the stresses of work demands, while concurrently being impeded by these same demands, is an important issue for organisations to consider. These findings indicate the need for middle managers to truly have an ability to engage in activities - and friendships - which will aid them in their working lives. The study also indicates a need for further investigation into the development and maintenance of friendships for both middle managers and other groups of employees. <br /

    Downsizing and organisational restructuring have impacted both the role and the number of middle managers in organisations. .This paper provides a review of recent research on middle management to seek an understanding of the current situation for middle managers as they face the start of the 2rt century. The literature review is presented in two parts - focusing on the position of middle managers as they emerge from downsizing, and drawing attention to the special circumstances for managers &quot;in the middle&quot;. The research points to some of the challenges middle managers\u27 experience as they work, live, and survive organisational life, as well as highlighting the need for ongoing investigation of their individual experiences.<br /

    Alkali-silica reaction (ASR) is a major concrete durability problem. The occurrence of ASR results in significant maintenance and reconstruction costs to concrete infrastructures all over the world. Ever since Stanton (1940) discovered the expansive characteristics of ASR in 1940, there has been much speculation as to the cause and actual mechanism of expansion. Current market solutions are not always sustainable, such as hauling non-reactive aggregates or fly ash from long distance; or use of Li-based chemical admixture that is facing challenge of raw material&lsquo;s availability. The current article will present a patent pending technology which provides a commercial solution for mitigating the ASR. The ASR mitigating effect of this technology is compared with lithium, calcium, and aluminum salts, and densified silica fume

    New eucryptodiran turtle

    35 p. : ill., maps ; 26 cm.Includes bibliographical references (p. 28-30).Chubutemys copelloi is the oldest nonmarine cryptodire from South America represented by a skull. The skull and associated postcranial fragments are from the Aptian Cerro CostaÅ no Member of the Cerro Barcino Formation of Chubut, Argentina. Chubutemys has a processus trochlearis oticum, showing that it is a cryptodire, and an enclosed canalis caroticus internus extending to the posterior margin of the pterygoid, showing that it is a eucryptodire. The skull of Chubutemys is similar to that of other primitive eucryptodires, particularly Dracochelys, but also to Hangaiemys, Judithemys, Sinemys, and Ordosemys. Chubutemys differs from all these, however, in possessing a solidly roofed skull, formed by long, wide parietals, rather than a posterior emargination. Chubutemys also differs from these taxa in having no cheek emargination. A phylogenetic analysis using PAUP* analyzed 104 parsimony-informative characters resolving into one most parsimonious cladogram of 224 steps, a consistency index of 0.55, and a retention index of 0.74. The phylogenetic analysis weakly joins Chubutemys and meiolaniids on the basis of the prefrontal-postorbital contact. Chubutemys also has a fully roofed skull and slitlike posterior opening of the foramen caroticum laterale (foramen posterius canalis caroticus laterale), features to be expected in a meiolaniid sister taxon. Chubutemys provides further evidence that meiolaniids are related to 'basal' eucryptodires ('sinemydids/macrobaenids'), that is, eucryptodires outside the living Cryptodira, the Polycryptodira. The basicranial morphology of meiolaniids, with an intrapterygoid slit, rather than being a unique feature of the group is instead a modified state of the primitive eucryptodire condition, as seen in such forms as Chubutemys, Dracochelys, Ordosemys, and Sinemys. The intrapterygoid slit of meiolaniids is homologous with the pterygoid flange associated with the foramen caroticum laterale (foramen posterius canalis caroticus laterale of Sukhanov) in non-Polycryptodiran eucryptodires like Ordosemys. Chubutemys shows that nonmarine eucryptodires were present in South America in the Cretaceous, as they were in North America, central Asia, and Australia

    The impact of NHS based primary care complementary therapy services on health outcomes and NHS costs: a review of service audits and evaluations

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The aim of this study was to review evaluations and audits of primary care complementary therapy services to determine the impact of these services on improving health outcomes and reducing NHS costs. Our intention is to help service users, service providers, clinicians and NHS commissioners make informed decisions about the potential of NHS based complementary therapy services.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We searched for published and unpublished studies of NHS based primary care complementary therapy services located in England and Wales from November 2003 to April 2008. We identified the type of information included in each document and extracted comparable data on health outcomes and NHS costs (e.g. prescriptions and GP consultations).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Twenty-one documents for 14 services met our inclusion criteria. Overall, the quality of the studies was poor, so few conclusions can be made. One controlled and eleven uncontrolled studies using SF36 or MYMOP indicated that primary care complementary therapy services had moderate to strong impact on health status scores. Data on the impact of primary care complementary therapy services on NHS costs were scarcer and inconclusive. One controlled study of a medical osteopathy service found that service users did not decrease their use of NHS resources.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>To improve the quality of evaluations, we urge those evaluating complementary therapy services to use standardised health outcome tools, calculate confidence intervals and collect NHS cost data from GP medical records. Further discussion is needed on ways to standardise the collection and reporting of NHS cost data in primary care complementary therapy services evaluations.</p

    The ethics of ‘Trials within Cohorts’ (TwiCs): 2nd international symposium - London, UK. 7-8 November 2016

    On 7-8 th November 2016, 60 people with an interest in the ‘ Trials within Cohorts ’ (TwiCs) approach for randomised controlled trial design met in London. The purpose of this 2 nd TwiCs international symposium was to share perspectives and experiences on ethical aspects of the TwiCs design, discuss how TwiCs relate to the current ethical frame- work, provide a forum in which to discuss and debate ethical issues and identify future directions for conceptual and empirical research. The symposium was supported by the Wellcome Trust and the NIHR CLAHRC Yorkshire and Humber and organised by members of the TwiCs network led by Clare Relton and attended by people from the UK, the Netherlands, Norway, Canada and USA. The two-day sympo- sium enabled an international group to meet and share experiences of the TwiCs design (also known as the ‘ cohort multiple RCT design ’ ), and to discuss plans for future research. Over the two days, invited plenary talks were interspersed by discussions, posters and mini pre- sentations from bioethicists, triallists and health research regulators. Key findings of the symposium were: (1) It is possible to make a compelling case to ethics committees that TwiCs designs are ap- propriate and ethical; (2) The importance of wider considerations around the ethics of inefficient trial designs; and (3) some questions about the ethical requirements for content and timing of informed consent for a study using the TwiCs design need to be decided on a case-by-case basis

    Caught in the middle : organizational impediments to middle managers\u27 work-life balance

    As increased work demands and longer working hours become the reality for many employees, the concept of work-life balance has received increasing attention. This paper presents findings from an exploratory study of Australian middle managers, which investigated the impact of middle managers&rsquo; daily organizational experiences on their lives both in and beyond the workplace. We focus on respondents&rsquo; reports of the difficulty in achieving work-life balance, specifically, the organizational impediments to creating balance. Three particular areas where these impediments were apparent are: the impact of new technologies; limits to autonomy and control in the middle management role; and difficulties in taking advantage of flexibility initiatives in the workplace. As middle managers are caught in the middle between work and personal life, there is a need for organizations to support middle managers&rsquo; efforts to achieve work-life balance if the organization&rsquo;s long-term goals are to be achieved.<br /
