    Wideband Dual Polarized Directional Base Station Antenna

    The thesis presents a study of different microwave radiators for wireless applications in the frequency range of 2.2 – 2.5GHz. The performance of microstrip patch antennas and dual polarized dipole antennas were evaluated numerically and experimentally verified. A single microstrip patch and a four- element microstrip array were simulated, fabricated and tested. Simulation was carried out by the finite integration time domain (FITD) method. Polarization diversity is realised using crossed dipoles printed elements. For the crossed dipole elements, two different feed arrangements were studied. Parameters such as return loss, isolation, radiation pattern, gain and bandwidth were measured and found to be in good agreement with simulation. Several techniques were used to obtain broadband performance. Balanced and unbalanced feeder systems, substrates effects and the use of planar elements were investigated. Significant achievements were achieved in bandwidth and port-to-port isolation by optimizing the feed system and antenna geometry

    This teaching brief describes a creative and innovative teaching strategy to create inclusive and anti-oppressive learning spaces. Counselor education faculty can use the instructional strategy described in this teaching brief to: (a) engage in reflexivity and positionality regarding antiracist teaching and racial justice; (b) use specific actions that counter racism; (c) address microaggressions; (d) provide skills for dialogues around difficult conversations such as racial justice (Thurber et al., 2019); and (e) assign learning activities and assessment practices that allow students to reflect on and address racial justice (Gonzalez & Cokley, 2021; Ng et al., 2022; Thurber et al., 2019)

    InContext is a custom-designed mobile application for writing assignments intended for university students in journalism and research methodology courses. In these disciplines, it has been observed that there is a need for an educational and technological tool to guide the writing of text using preloaded templates in which students can input text and multimedia material to create articles or write research reports. Besides its ease of use, the app was intended to improve metacognitive thinking. This led to the establishment of six working hypotheses in an exploratory study. For the study, a random sample of students enrolled in the aforementioned courses was selected during the August-December 2019 semester at a private university in Mexico. They took a pre-test using the “Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire” (MSLQ) that had been translated into Spanish and already validated in Mexico. Subsequently, the students used the application and then answered the same questionnaire as a post-test. The study aimed to compare the results of the tests to see whether there was an improvement in cognitive skills. The results showed an increase in four skills: critical thinking, data search, cognitive self-regulation, and regulation of effort. The research results did indicate metacognitive development that would benefit the academic and professional work of future graduates

    Data-science ready, multisite, human diffusion MRI whitematter- tract statistics

    Published 30 November 2020The white matter tracts in the living human brain are critical for healthy function, and the diffusion MRI measured in these tracts is correlated with diverse behavioral measures. The technical skills required to analyze diffusion MRI data are complex: data acquisition requires MRI sequence development and acquisition expertise, analyzing raw-data into meaningful summary statistics requires computational neuroimaging and neuroanatomy expertise. The human white matter study field will advance faster if the tract summaries are available in plain data-science-ready format for non-diffusion MRI experts, such as statisticians, computer graphic researchers or data scientists in general. Here, we share a curated and processed dataset from three different MRI centers in a format that is data-science ready. The multisite data we share include measures of within and between MRI center variation in white-matter-tract diffusion measurements. Along with the dataset description and summary statistics, we describe the state-of-the-art computational system that guarantees reproducibility and provenance from the original scanner output.This work was supported by a Marie Sklodowska-Curie (H2020-MSCA-IF-2017-795807-ReCiModel) grant to G.L.-U.     InContext es una aplicación móvil, diseñada a medida, para elaborar trabajos de redacción para estudiantes universitarios de los cursos de periodismo y de metodología de la investigación. En estas disciplinas se observó que había una necesidad de contar con una herramienta educativa y tecnológica que guiara la redacción utilizando plantillas precargadas en las cuales los estudiantes pudieran agregar texto y material multimedia para con ello construir artículos periodísticos o reportes de investigación. Además de la facilidad de uso, se esperaba que la app mejorara el pensamiento metacognitivo, por lo cual se establecieron seis hipótesis de trabajo en un estudio exploratorio. Para la investigación se seleccionó una muestra aleatoria de estudiantes inscritos en los cursos durante el semestre agosto-diciembre 2019 en una universidad privada de México. Los alumnos realizaron un pretest utilizando el cuestionario Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) traducido al español y ya validado en México; posteriormente utilizaron la aplicación y contestaron el mismo cuestionario a manera de postest, con el objetivo de comparar si había una mejora en las habilidades cognitivas. Los resultados indican que existe un aumento en cuatro habilidades: pensamiento crítico, búsqueda de datos, autorregulación cognitiva y regulación del esfuerzo, pero no lo hubo en organización ni en búsqueda de ayuda.     Quantitative Analysis Procedure for Building Materials in Historic Buildings by Applying Infrared Thermography

    [EN] Historic buildings have a great cultural and architectural value. It is necessary to analyze their state of conservation, but sometimes it is difficult to perform laboratory tests without damaging this heritage. In the field of architecture, infrared thermography is usually used to provide descriptive information about the surface temperature of building materials. This current research presents a methodology widely applicable to historic buildings. As an example of application, the study is focused in the Seminary-School of Corpus Christi of Valencia (Spain), a very outstanding building from the 16th Century. This research presents an analytical study to be able to differentiate the temperature distribution of all pixels of a thermographic image.
