The context paradox in attitude surveys: assimilation or contrast?

(HN2)'Three experiments were conducted to determine under which conditions responses to a general question become more similar to ('part-whole assimilation') or more dissimilar from ('part-whole contrast') responses to a preceding specific question. The results suggest that asking a specific question increases the cognitive accessibility of the information used to answer it. The answer to the subsequent general question will therefore be based in part on the same information, resulting in similar responses. The highly accessible specific information, however, will not always be used. Most importantly, central principles of conversation urge communicators to be informative and to avoid redundancy. Therefore, if both questions are perceived as belonging together, the previously activated will be disregarded, which results in dissimilar pesponses to the general question. The conditions under which these effects occur are identified and experimentally manipulated, and the implications for questionnaire design are discussed.' (author's abstract

Structured Analysis and Review of Filter-Based Control Strategies for Hybrid Energy Storage Systems

Hybrid energy storage systems (HESS), i.e., the combination of two different energy storage technologies, are widely discussed as a promising solution for energy storage problems. A common control scheme to allocate the power between these storages and the subject of this study is filter-based control, where a filter splits the input signal into a low-frequency and high-frequency part. It provides robust results and easy implementation, although more advanced strategies may perform better. Many publications use this controller for specific problems, but a structured analysis of this controller type that quantifies the advantages and disadvantages, traits, and setbacks is missing. This work fills this gap and structures, summarizes, and provides mathematical background and guidelines on filter-based control of hybrid energy storage systems. Numerical simulations are performed to quantify the impact of design variables, parameters, or the input signal by using a linear storage model with efficiency and self-discharge rate and a low-pass filter controller with constant energy feedback as a representative subtype of this control scheme. The present work proves the high cycle-reduction capabilities of filter-controlled HESS at the cost of overdimensioning compared to more advanced control strategies. It demonstrates that using a high-efficiency, high-power storage with a low self-discharge rate and high-energy storage leads to smaller overall dimensioning and losses than a single storage system. The study identifies the feedback factor of the controller as the most impacting design variable

Film thickness measurements in a running hydrostatic unit using ultrasound

The present paper describes the measurement of the oil film thickness in the range of a few micrometers in an operating hydrostatic unit using ultrasound. The investigated tribological system consists of a rotating steel cylinder block and a stationary bi-metal valve plate under static and hydrodynamic lubrication. The film thickness has been recorded in a wide range of operating conditions, pressure between 100 to 300 bar and rotational speed between 500 and 3000 rpm, to support a deeper understanding of the system. Temperature sensors were implemented next to the ultrasound sensors to compensate the ultrasound signal amplitude and phase change due to temperature dependent acoustic impedances. To confirm the results, especially the presence of deliberate zero-film conditions, wear profiles of the running surface were taken. The ultrasound technique also allows the real-time observation of film thickness oscillations with shaft and piston frequency. Steady-state measurements confirm the system behavior observed in transient operation and zero-film conditions with respect to hardware configuration were detected. The findings will be utilized to support current product development activities and to validate and improve simulation models used for film thickness predictions
