Wave-vector dependence of spin and density multipole excitations in quantum dots
We have employed time-dependent local-spin density functional theory to
analyze the multipole spin and charge density excitations in GaAs-AlGaAs
quantum dots. The on-plane transferred momentum degree of freedom has been
taken into account, and the wave-vector dependence of the excitations is
discussed. In agreement with previous experiments, we have found that the
energies of these modes do not depend on the transferred wave-vector, although
their intensities do. Comparison with a recent resonant Raman scattering
experiment [C. Sch\"uller et al, Phys. Rev. Lett {\bf 80}, 2673 (1998)] is
made. This allows to identify the angular momentum of several of the observed
modes as well as to reproduce their energies.Comment: 14 pages in REVTEX and 14 postscript figure

Deciphering the ecology of the threatened microendemic species Euphorbia margalidiana
Small islands play a critical role in the study of plant ecology and evolution. Here, we reveal the ecology of Euphorbia margalidiana, an endemic plant that thrives in a micro-island environment in the Western Mediterranean region. Through a detailed characterization of the habitat, including plant communities, microclimate, soil properties, and germination assays, we examine the effects of biotic and abiotic factors on the distribution of this endangered species. We also analyze its pollination biology, evaluate the success of vegetative propagation, and discuss its potential use in conservation strategies. Our results show that E. margalidiana is a characteristic species of the shrub ornitocoprophilous insular vegetation of the Western Mediterranean. The seeds have a very low dispersion capacity outside the islet and that seed-derived plants have higher survival rates under drought conditions than those vegetatively propagated. The main volatile compound emitted from the pseudanthia is phenol which attracts the plants’ main and almost exclusive pollinators in the islet, flies. Our results confirm the relictual status of E. margalidiana and highlight the importance of key adaptive traits that enable the survival of this species in the harsh micro-island environment of Ses Margalides
BiologÃa reproductiva de Helianthemum apenninum (L.) Mill. y H. caput-felis Boiss. (Cistaceae) de Mallorca (Islas Baleares, España)
The study of reproductive biology of natural populations of Helianthemum apenninum and H. caput-felis from Majorca, has demonstrated them to be basically entomophilous, although they also produce many fruits by self-pollination. H. caput-felis flowers last for four days, while H. apenninum flowers last for one day, as ussualy occurs in other species of the genus. In the H. appeninum population, severe ungulate predation affects 50% of the plants. In germination tests, the optimum temperature was 16°C for H. apenninum and 23 °C for H. caput-felis. H. caput-felis shows high interannual germination variability. In the naturally occurring population of H. caput-felis, it has been observed atelechory, and related to this, the germination of the seeds covered by the fruit capsule.
liquen plano bucal.Introduction: The chronic liver disease is a pathology produced,
mainly, by the alcohol chronic abuse and by the hepatitis B
and/or C virus infection. In the last years, it has been widely
discussed the possible association between chronic liver disease
and oral lichen planus. Recently, it has been suggested that the
association between oral lichen planus and liver disease has a
viral origin.
Material and method: The objective of this transversal matched
study is to know if there is a relationship between B and/or C
viral chronic hepatitis and oral lichen planus. Two groups of
100 patients were selected: a case group with patients infected
with hepatitis B and/or C virus, and a control group without
liver disease matched in age and gender. Oral cavity was
explored to detect lichen planus in both groups, but we registered
other mucosal alterations.
Results: We did not found any patient of the case group with
oral lichen planus, but four patients with this disease in the control
group.
Conclusions: In our study we did not found any association
between the infection with the hepatitis B and/or C virus and
oral lichen planus
Since the first liver transplantation in Spain was carried out in
1984, advances in surgical technique and immunosuppressive
drugs have facilitated an increase in the number of transplants
performed. The present study evaluates buccodental health in
liver transplant patients. A cross-sectional descriptive study was
made of a sample of patients subjected to liver transplantation
in PrÃncipes de España Hospital (Bellvitge University Health
Care Complex, L Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona - Spain).
Information was collected relating to demographic characteristics,
general clinical history, buccodental history and intraoral
exploratory findings. A total of 53 individuals were evaluated (28
males and 25 females, with a mean age of 57.6 years). The mean
time elapsed from transplantation was 3 years and 9 months.
The most frequent indication for liver transplantation was liver
cirrhosis due to hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection (49.1% of the global series). The most widely used immunosuppressors were
cyclosporine and tacrolimus. The CAOD index of the series
was 11.2. In relation to periodontal disease, 22% of the dentate
patients showed gingival overgrowth, while half of those with
teeth had gingival recessions, and 34% presented some type of
dental mobility. The examination of the oral mucosa showed
fissured tongue to be the most common disorder (39.6%), followed
by saburral tongue (28.3%) and xerostomia (18.9%).
Buccodental pathology in these patients is related to the use of
immunosuppressor medication and other factors such as a lack
of preventive measures. The findings of the present study point
to the need for preventive treatments in this population group
Peer ReviewedPostprint (author’s final draft
Can floral volatile organic compounds contribute to the taxonomy of the Rhamnus sect. Alaternus?
The chemistry of plants represents a taxonomic and phylogenetic value. Researchers have recently used volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for taxonomic studies. The present work analysed and determined, for the first time, the usefulness of floral volatile compounds in the taxonomy of two species of Rhamnus sect. Alaternus, as well as the hybrid between these taxa. The two species show significant quantitative and qualitative differences. The terpenes linalool, ocimene, caryophyllene, and green volatiles are exclusive to Rh. alaternus, while farnesene (terpene), methyl salicylate and methyl benzoate (benzoids) are obtained from Rh. ludovici-salvatoris. Both volatilomes were attractive to Hymenoptera pollinators; therefore, these pollinators could serve as the main hybridisation vector. In addition, Rh. alaternus shows greater chemical and genetic heterogeneity than Rh. ludovici-salvatoris. Hybrids between the two species, Rh. × bermejoi, are closer in chemical similarity to Rh. alaternus than Rh. ludovici-salvatoris
Baseline hepatitis C virus resistance-associated substitutions present at frequencies lower than 15% may be clinically significant
Background: Controversy is ongoing about whether a minority mutant present at frequencies below 15% may be clinically relevant and should be considered to guide treatment. Methods: Resistance-associated substitution (RAS) studies were performed in patients before and at failure of antiviral treatments using Next-generation hepatitis C virus (HCV) sequencing (NGS). Results: We have found two patients with genotype 1a infection having RAS in 3.5%-7.1% of the viral population at baseline that were selected during ledipasvir + sofosbuvir treatment. Coselection of RAS located in a region not directly affected by the antiviral treatment also occurred. This observation calls into question, the recommendations to guide RAS-based direct-acting antiviral (DAA) treatment only when RAS are present in > 15% of the sequences generated. Conclusion: Our results suggests that RAS study should include all three HCV DAA target proteins and minority mutants should be considered as clinically relevant
DLCO<50% ref).
izquierda y derecha (RMS, izquierda: 0.68±0.11 – derecha:
0.69±0.12; entropÃa de Rényi, izquierda: 0.73±0.10 – derecha:
0.77±0.08; Lempel-Ziv Multiestado, izquierda: 0.73±0.17 –
0.63; Lempel-Ziv Multiestado, izquierda: 0.39 – derecha: 0.64).
