In Monterey County, the childhood obesity rate is 48.6% and is considered the fourth highest percentage of overweight/obese children among the 58 counties in California (UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, 2011). The Greenfield Union School District After School Education and Safety Program is a program designed to keep students safe, to provide homework support, and to provide enrichment and physically healthy activities. An educational intervention project was implemented at the After School Education and Safety Program to address obesity. The purpose of this project was to promote a healthy environment within schools and support the health and well-being of all students in the After School Education and Safety Program. The expected outcomes for this project were for students to increase nutritional knowledge, to inspire students to be engaged, and witness students making healthy progress. The project implementation was achieved by presenting weekly lessons to 6th through 8th grade levels, and creating a guide for future staff. The Healthy Choices for Healthy Teens lessons were assessed through pre and post survey. These results showed an increase in nutritional knowledge, and in healthy choices. After concluding this project, 85% of the students found these lessons helpful to ensure future healthy habits. Recommendations for the After School Education and Safety Program is to train staff to provide a learning environment for future interns and continue this project to enhance the students knowledge of healthy choices

Long-term rearrangement of retinal structures in a novel mutation of X-linked retinoschisis

    Get PDF
The aim of the present study was to report a novel mutation in the retinoschisin 1 (RS1) gene in a Caucasian family affected by X-linked juvenile retinoschisis (XLRS) and to describe the long-term modification of retinal structure. Two brothers with an early onset maculopathy were diagnosed with XLRS. Fundus photography, fluorescein angiography, spectral domain optical coherence tomography and electroretinogram analyses were performed. Their sister was also examined. All subjects were screened for mutations in the RS1 gene. XLRS patients demonstrated a marked reduction of best-corrected visual acuity. SD-OCT scans reported a cystic degeneration primarily involving the inner nuclear layer, though some cysts were detected in the outer plexiform layer and in the ganglion cell layer. During the ten-year follow-up, a progressive retinal thickening and coalescence of the cysts was observed. Genetic testing revealed a novel mutation (p.Ile212Asn) in the RS1 gene in both XLRS patients, whereas their sister was not a genetic carrier. Several mutations of the RS1 gene were recognized to be responsible for XLRS. Although the correspondence between genotype and phenotype is still under debate, is reasonable that siblings affected by XLRS could share other genetic and/or epigenetic factors capable to influence clinical course of the disease

Non\u2011syndromic isolated dominant optic atrophy caused by the p.R468C mutation in the AFG3 like matrix AAA peptidase subunit 2 gene

    Get PDF
Autosomal dominant optic atrophy (DOA) is the most frequent form of hereditary optic atrophy, a disease presenting with considerable inter- and intra-familial clinical variability. Although a number of mutations in different genes are now known to cause DOA, many cases remain undiagnosed. In an attempt to identify the underlying genetic defect, whole exome sequencing was performed in a 19-year-old male that had been affected by isolated DOA since childhood. The exome sequencing revealed a pathogenic mutation (p.R468C, c.1402C>T) in the AFG3 like matrix AAA peptidase subunit 2 (AFG3L2) gene, a gene known to be associated with spinocerebellar ataxia. The patient did not show any signs other than DOA. Thus, the result demonstrates the possibility that mutations in the AFG3L2 gene may be a cause of isolated autosomal DOA

Language and Literacy Practices of Bilingual Education Preservice Teachers at a Hispanic-Serving College of Education

    Get PDF
This chapter focuses on an exploratory study of the language and literacy practices of undergraduate students within our Hispanic-Serving College of Education (HSCOE). HSCOEs must first understand and approach the language and literacy practices of bilingual education preservice teachers from an asset-based perspective. Language and literacy practices shape people’s identities and how they exist in the world. Language and literacy development also have an essential role in adult success since reading allows people to access, analyze, synthesize, and use knowledge to understand the world and learn new things. Much of the literature related to language and literacy practices at the postsecondary level focuses on academic literacy, especially the particular language of higher education and academia. The intersection of language and academic preparedness and performance for bilingual Latinx students is particularly noteworthy. The bilingual education preservice teachers used multiple linguistic codes and engaged in translanguaging in various aspects of their lives
